Iowa's Caitlin is tired of the publicity and the spotlight so she has decided to remove herself from all public contact. She announced she will join the WNBA. Unless she gets imprisoned in Russia, she will be not heard from again.

Although, interestingly, the 2024 NCAA Women's Championship Game had a wider viewership than the Men's Final, between Connecticut and Purdue. MAGA Incels are, no doubt, disappointed about that strong showing for Caitlin Clark and the Iowa Hawkeyes. Perhaps Clark's notoriety will have an impact on WNBA ratings.

I haven't watched a college on NBA basketball game in over 10 years. According to the WNBA, regular-season games on ESPN and CBS averaged 505,000 viewers, an 8% increase over last year. The Sunday afternoon games on ABC averaged 627,000, its most since 2012. Going into the finals, though, playoff viewership was averaging 400,000, an 8% decline over last year. If 505,000 viewers is a ratings success, it must mean all the lesbians in the country are watching.

Incidentally, do you believe all professional female athletes are lesbians? Did you read that in a MAGA Incels of America newsletter?

Unless she gets imprisoned in Russia, she will be not heard from again. Although, interestingly, the 2024 NCAA Women's Championship Game had a wider viewership than the Men's Final, between Connecticut and Purdue. Some suggest that it was the result of the broadcast vehicle, for the final 4, the NCAA used for men, TBS/TNT V the women, who were on ESPN/ABC and led by Caitlin Clark's star power. Along w the broadcast time. Though all could have purchased a package to stream every game, many didn't. The one/two and done of the men's game, at the star level, ftmp, has diminished the men's draw unless you have a cheering interest in the team. Many future NBA players never play in college or if they do, again, only stay a yr, maybe two.
ESPN spent a year hyping Caitlin Clark. And she produced.
The men’s entire tournament averaged 9.9 million viewers per game, far surpassing the women’s, which attracted an average of 2.2 million viewers.
Through the tournaments' TV rights deals, the women’s tournament earned $6.5M while the men’s earned $873M. A new deal that goes into effect next season will allocate some $65M a year for the women’s game. THe men's will exceed 1 Billion.

If I recognize or remember names, they are usually Final Four heroes, like Danny Manning, Christian Laetner, Patrick Ewing, Grant Hill, etc. I remember watching a guy nail a big game winner for the North Carolina Tar Heels many years ago. Michael...uh...Johnson? No...it was Jordan...

She carried the game. Someone has to step up and keep it going, it’s a flash in the pan kind of deal. The talent will continue to grow. The woman's games has become more athletic. At the U level, they've been selling out home games for the top dozen schools. Much like WVB, which, I'll suggest, is a bigger game than the mens'. But beyond the local support, nsm interest.
It all comes down to how much the broadcast media wants to pump it up. The women's tourney is a good vehicle, at the right time of the year, for ESPN. They don't have much else. And they can buy the rights for peanuts. CBS spends a ton paying for, promoting and broadcasting Men's March Madness. Maybe someday the women's game gets there. Probably not.
I should add if NCAA sports programing goes to pay to watch streaming, across the board, general interest for all but FB will wane. Even then. MAybe outfits like B1G Network works, but I'm not that interested to pony up the funds.

I'd be willing to bet that 9 out of 10 Americans couldn't name any players (men or women) in the tournament...other than Clark. I'd agree to some large %. The "one and done" college men's game has impacted attachment to the players, beyond the team you may follow.
Perhaps, we are just getting older and are less passionate about that.
At the Pro level more than half of Americans (53%) say America's sport is football, about twice the share who say it's baseball (27%). Much smaller shares choose one of the other four sports asked. Basketball (8%), soccer (3%), auto racing (3%) or hockey (1%). All are men, ftmp.

The regional numbers must vary a bit, by year. I lived in Boston from 1979-83, and Bean Town went nuts for Larry Bird and the Celtics in those days.

Seems like a no brainer but while the interest from fans was high, broadcasters (ESPN) didn't believe there was enough interest to be profitable. Suffice to say, they learned their lesson. The championship match was on non-pay TV fpr the first time last year, too and drew record numbers. As for the comparison of WVB to MVB, it's not a suggestion, it is absolutely true. And I love it!
