Riley Cooper was my wife's favorite player during his time at UF. You could have just stopped here. I thought your defense of him was simply because he was a Gator but this clarifies things a bit more. That said, is this *that* big of a deal? Not really but trying to defend or dismiss what he did is ridiculous. You don't say what he did, in the manner in which he said it, and not be a racist. To brush with such a broad stroke tells me this wasn't a simple little slip of the tongue. Now, we can debate until the cows come home whether he is a "serious racist" (Rome is an idiot, BTW) or just made a mistake but if you take off the orange and blue glasses for a minute, you will see him for what he is. Again, most people say when they are drunk what they think when they are sober.

What a stupid ass thing to say, particularly for someone who works in the profession that is probably at least 80 percent African American. That said, it's not like he shot somebody or beat somebody up. He may have hurt some feelings but doesn't he have the right to say what he wants to say?

No, Riley Cooper is not a racist for this lone instance of drunken and immature behavior. He has issues, but racism isn't the issue.
No, I will not debate you on what a racist is or isn't. What happens will happen. I'm 100% certain this will be a media driven issue.
Finally, I challenge you to post my comments where I defended or dismissed the act.

Cooper may have been born in Oklahoma City, but he grew up and played high school football and baseball in Tampa:

PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia Eagles are setting up Riley Cooper with sensitivity training after the wide receiver was caught on video making a racial slur.
“In meeting with Riley yesterday, we decided together that his next step will be to seek outside assistance to help him fully understand the impact of his words and actions,” the team said in a statement Thursday. “He needs to reflect. As an organization, we will provide the resources he needs to do so.”
Cooper apologized profusely Wednesday after a video of him using the N-word at a Kenny Chesney concert last month surfaced on the Internet. The Eagles immediately fined him.
Cooper, an Oklahoma City native, was selected in the 2010 fifth round by the Eagles out of the University of Florida. He had 248 yards receiving and three touchdowns last season.

Finally, I challenge you to post my comments where I defended or dismissed the act. Sorry, my mistake in the wording. I see you defending the character of the person who is rightfully (IMO) under attack for his idiocy, not the idiocy itself. It has gone too far already, though, we do agree there. And maybe dismiss isn't the right phrase but you blaming his comments on the alcohol is a little crazy to me. He was not stumbling drunk in the clip I saw, he was mad and used a term he has probably uttered hundreds of times. Unfortunately for him, it caught on camera this time.

Now, the rest of the story:
1. Kenny Chesney is the #1 Tennessee fan 2. Tebow is a country music fan and has been on stage with Kenny Chesney several times 3. You can bet Riley Cooper has met Chesney too 4. I've read that Cooper was upset for not being allowed back stage 5. This is Chesney wearing a Gator helmet in Gainesville with Tebow on stage:
6. If there is any connection between Riley and Chesney, it's through Tebow 7. Not that it matters, Chesney is also friends with Steve Spurrier 8. Again, not that it matters, vol fans don't like their #1 fan fraternizing with the football enemy
I think it's interesting that no one yet has asked why Riley Cooper wanted to go backstage at the Kenny Chesney concert.

Gators Open Fall Practice With 5 Starters Out: www.gatorsports.com/article/20130801/APS/1308010992?p=1&tc=pgThe two OL concern me the most - partially torn pec and bad back are not good for big uglies. I'm thinking Matt Jones has something akin to cdiff. That can be nasty, but he'll get better quickly on the antibiotics. Gaining his weight back to 230 won't be an issue either, maybe a couple of weeks.

Tampa, Clearwater, and St. Petersburg are all part of the Tampa Bay area. You may be right about Clearwater. I'll see if the 2010 roster is still on Gatorzone the next time I go there.

The quick action by Philadelphia stopped the NFL from punishing Cooper. The NFL bargaining agreement stipulates the team and the NFL cannot punish for the same offense. With this bit of knowledge, the situation is over except for the crazed media who will never let it go. The reason I say it's over is you won't ever see anything like this from Riley Cooper again.

BTW, Riley Cooper is a good WR. He's going to help the Eagles a lot in the Chip Kelly offense. Not only is he a big and fast target, he's an excellent blocker from the WR position.
