After an up-and-down career at Florida, Jeff Driskel, now at Louisiana Tech, will get the chance to finish out his college career as a starter.
Tech head coach Skip Holtz told The News-Star that Driskel, a fifth-year senior, will enter the season as the Bulldogs’ starting quarterback.
Driskel and redshirt junior Ryan Higgins shared reps with the first-team throughout spring practice and Holtz opted not to name a starter after the team’s spring game in April. But after further evaluating their performances from spring practice, the coaching staff decided on Driskel.
“After spring practice we went through all the numbers and we met with all the players and all the quarterbacks on where they ranked and where they were,” Holtz said. “Just looking at the numbers from the whole body of work through spring practice, I felt Jeff Driskel gave us the best opportunity as a quarterback. That’s when we looked at him and said he’ll be the starter.”
Holtz also chose Driskel to represent the team at Conference USA Media Day on Wednesday.
From The News-Star:
Holtz, who had running back Kenneth Dixon represent the offense for media last year, said he decided to take Driskel because he “earned the players’ respect” and “earned this opportunity to come in here and talk a little bit about what he sees about the program.”
“He doesn’t have a biased view and he can talk about the commitment and the work ethic and those types of things as he’s come in and the things that have impressed him about the program,” Holtz said.
Driskel was rated No. 32 nationally as a recruit coming out of the 2011 class and led the Gators to 11 wins and a Sugar Bowl appearance in 2012. Driskel missed most of the 2013 season (and was granted a medical redshirt) after breaking his leg in Week 3, and came back in 2014 as the team’s starter. However, Driskel struggled last season and was replaced by true freshman Treon Harris.
New Florida head coach Jim McElwain granted Driskel’s release from the program in January and he quickly made the decision to transfer to Louisiana Tech.
Overall in his career at Florida, Driskel threw for 3,411 yards, 23 touchdowns and 20 interceptions. He also added 644 yards and nine touchdowns rushing.
Tech went 9-5 in 2014 and beat Illinois in the Heart of Dallas Bowl.

HOOVER, Ala. — If money was his motive, Jonathan Bullard would be starting NFL training camp right now.
Following his junior season in 2014, the Florida defensive lineman received a mid-round grade and would have been selected in the upcoming draft.
His head coach and position coach were gone, and two of his 2012 classmates, Dante Fowler Jr. and D.J. Humphries, had decided to leave early.
Bullard was coming off the best season of his career and had many reasons to turn pro.
But he's chasing a different kind of green.
“I really want to be in that green room,” Bullard said. “That's always been my dream.”
The former five-star recruit did not want to settle for being a third- or fourth-round NFL draft pick. His goal is to be the fourth consecutive UF defensive lineman to go in the first round, joining Sharrif Floyd, Dominique Easley and Fowler.
“It's going to be hard work, but I'm willing to do that,” Bullard said. “I've been going hard all spring and all summer. I'm going to continue to not only push myself, but push my teammates.”
Bullard's return for his senior season inherently gives him more responsibility as a team leader, which he has embraced.
“I can't tell you how proud I am of him, the way he's taken that,” Florida coach Jim McElwain said. “Sitting in my office saying, 'You know what, I'm ready to take a true leadership role and bring these guys along and show them how to do it.'

I'm glad this is finally resolved. He wasn't going to be in the 2 deep and UF didn't need him to be a cancer on the defense:

Florida sophomore defensive lineman Jay-nard Bostwick has been granted his release and is free to transfer to another school.
Florida confirmed Friday that Bostwick was granted his release by new UF football coach Jim McElwain. The 6-foot-3, 290-pound defensive tackle out of Centennial High in Port St. Lucie was a member of UF’s 2013 signing class.
Bostwick sat out UF’s spring season while dealing with “personal issues,” according to McElwain. He appeared in five games for the Gators in 2014, recording three tackles and no sacks.
Bostwick is the sixth player to leave the UF program since McElwain took over as coach in December, a list that includes quarterbacks Jeff Driskel and Skyler Mornhinweg, cornerback J.C. Jackson, defensive lineman Gerald Willis and tight end Daniel Imatorbhebhe. Driskel transferred to Louisiana Tech, while Mornhinweg transferred to Columbia. Jackson, meanwhile, is facing felony armed robbery charges and opted to leave after being told last spring he wouldn’t remain on scholarship.
Gerald Willis has temperament issues, fighting against team members, so he was released and he transferred to Miami. Daniel Imatorbhebhe was granted a mercy release after he enrolled in January so he could transfer to USC when his parents moved to LA.

By SCOTT CARTER GatorZone.com Senior Writer
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The son of a coach, Vernon Hargreaves III owns a more nuanced view of football than most players his age.
He sees things others miss completely. He grasps the whys and hows quicker than most. He is a natural, a fierce competitor with a clue.
And then Hargreaves has another advantage many of his teammates and opponents lack: elite talent.
Add those qualities up, and it’s easy to understand the whys and hows of Hargreaves’ status as he enters his third season at UF.
Hargreaves is considered the Gators’ most talented player, the player on the roster most likely to be a star in the NFL. Several 2016 NFL mock drafts have Hargreaves going in the first 10 picks prior to a snap of his junior season.
“He’s all that has been advertised,’’ first-year Florida coach Jim McElwain said. “That guy is a great player, understands how to handle himself, and gets it.”
The last time we saw Hargreaves on the field was in January. On the 869th play of the season for the Florida defense – its final play – the 5-foot-11, 199-pound Hargreaves sealed a 28-20 victory over East Carolina in the Birmingham Bowl by picking off a pass from Pirates quarterback Shane Carden in the end zone.
A year after Hargreaves debuted on the first Florida team with a losing record 34 years, his interception ensured the 2014 Gators finished with a winning record.
Perhaps small consolation in the big picture, but much-needed nonetheless for a program that has turned to McElwain to add more offense and victories.
“It’s tough when you don’t win,’’ Hargreaves said. “That’s all I want to do.”
If the Gators win in 2015, expect Hargreaves to continue to be a major reason why.
Hargreaves was a first-team All-American as a sophomore and is considered one of the top returning defensive players in the country. He is the best cornerback the Gators have had since Joe Haden helped Florida win a national championship in 2008.
Seems fitting Hargreaves wears No. 1.
“He pushes everybody,’’ senior defensive lineman Jonathan Bullard said. “With him being so good, the way he works, it is unbelievable. He’s not a leader you can get on. That’s the type of leadership you need.”
It’s the type of leader Hargreaves learned to be growing up when he tagged along with his father, Vernon Hargreaves Jr. The elder Hargreaves, in his first season as linebackers coach at Arkansas, was a Miami assistant for several years when Vernon III was young.
He often watched Hurricanes such as first-round picks Jonathan Vilma and D.J. Williams practice under the direction of his dad. He learned what it took to be a great player.
Hargreaves uses a technique to motivate his Florida teammates he learned watching those Hurricanes practice. If one of the defensive backs drops an interception or misses a play in practice, Hargreaves tells them to do push-ups. He does the same.
Considering who is giving the orders, they do them.
“The first time I told them to do push-ups, they kind of looked at me like, ‘Are you serious?’ ’’ Hargreaves said. “They understood where I was coming from. They know I wasn’t trying to be an arrogant leader, and I do my fair share of push-ups. I think they respected me enough to do them.”
Hargreaves earned a spot in the starting lineup in only his third game at UF and has started 22 consecutive games heading into the season opener Sept. 5 against New Mexico State.
He finished last season with 50 tackles, three interceptions and 13 pass breakups, which was tied for tops in the Southeastern Conference.
The Gators are 11-13 in his two seasons, a trend he wants to reverse in what could be his final season at Florida. Hargreaves admits while the personal accolades are nice, he wants more wins to celebrate and more points from the offense.
“It’s frustrating, which is natural, but I think it’s how you control it and where you put that frustration,’’ he said. “You can put it toward the offense and not help anybody, or you can keep it to yourself and use it to get better and better your teammates.
“I’m excited to get this offense going, hopefully put some points on the board. We’re going to be hard to beat if we can do that.”
With Hargreaves the leader of a secondary that returns Brian Poole, Keanu Neal, Duke Dawson, Jalen Tabor, Quincy Wilson and Marcus Maye, the Florida defense has an opportunity to continue to be among the nation’s best.
First-year defensive coordinator Geoff Collins inherited a talented group that is determined not to have a drop-off following the departure of former head coach Will Muschamp, who relied on the defense to win games during his four seasons.
Hargreaves sees no reason why the Gators can’t continue to excel defensively despite the coaching change.
“The playbook is pretty much the same. Coach Collins came in and asked us how we wanted to call things and how we wanted to run things, etcetera, and etcetera,’’ he said. “I think that helped us out a lot. It’s going to be the same fast and physical Florida defense. We’re going to rely on the secondary because we’re the best part of the team. We’re probably the best in the country.”
As he settled into his new job in the spring, it didn’t take McElwain long to figure out Hargreaves was a cut above.
The whys and hows were on display each day at practice.
“He loves to compete. When the competition is there, he elevates his play a little more,’’ McElwain said. “I love the way this guy comes to work every day.”

Caleb Brantley - UF's next great DT? If his attitude and coach ability is right, Caleb has the chance to be special: hailfloridahail.com/2015/07/23/caleb-brantley-is-he-the-next-great-gators-defensive-tackle/Brantley may just be the Gators defender to most likely reek the most havoc on the defensive line in 2015– that’s how impressed I came away from watching this young man. The one thing that was made obvious right away is that at 6’3, 314 pounds, he is a big load to handle for any offensive lineman. The second thing that stood up and smacked me in the face was that Brantley can really move along the line scrimmage and make tackles on plays that were initially moving away from him. I’m going to hesitantly throw this out there; his movement and agility as a DT reminded me so much of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and former Oklahoma Sooner, Gerald McCoy. UF is loaded on the interior line with good players: Caleb Brantley Taven Bryan Khairi Clark Thomas Holley Joey Ivie Jonathan Bullard SDE/DT/NT The one thing that appears to be lacking on the DL is a run stopper/pass rusher out of the mold of Jevon Kearse, Derrick Harvey, Jarvis Moss, and Carlos Dunlap. Maybe CeCe Jefferson fills that roll, but only time will tell on this one. UF has specialists against the run and against the pass, but nobody proven that can do both.

Don't know if you saw the note, but the #1 rated DT that year, Travonte Valentine, he who committed to just about every program at one time or another, finally wound up at LSU, but got in very late due to his academic issues. I've heard all sorts of stories on him, some saying he showed up having bloated up over 400 pounds and completely out of shape. Whatever happened, he evidently couldn't hack it and has recently transferred from LSU to I believe a 2 year program out west. Once agains proving the Star ratings are pretty much a hit and miss.

It's not like they shot the President, but it's immature to the extreme. That's what worries me the most. Trn, how many steps do they run for this?:
Written by Nick de la Torre, July 25, 2015
Florida Gators football players Caleb Brantley and Adam Lane are being charged with “defrauding an innkeeper for less than $300” (Florida Statute 509.151) — a second-degree misdemeanor — after the pair allegedly knowingly left an establishment without paying their bill.
Court records obtained by Gator Country show that Brantley, Lane and a group of people entered Splitz Bowling Alley in Gainesville at approximately 8:55 PM on July 4. The court document then states that Brantley and Lane left Splitz at approximately 9:45 pm without paying their tab. Brantley’s tab was for $42.34 and Lane’s was $16.93.
Florida Statute 509.151 reads: Obtaining food or lodging with intent to defraud; penalty.
(1) Any person who obtains food, lodging, or other accommodations having a value of less than $300 at any public food service establishment, or at any transient establishment, with intent to defraud the operator thereof, is guilty of a misdemeanor of the second degree
(2) This section does not apply where there has been an agreement in writing for delay in payments. This section shall not be used to circumvent the procedural requirements of the Florida Residential Landlord and Tenant Act.
Misdemeanors in the second degree are the least serious misdemeanors in the state of Florida with a normal maximum sentence of up to 60 days in jail or a maximum $500 fine. Neither player was formally arrested and due to the low totals that each walked out on it is likely that both cases will be wrapped up quickly with each paying restitution to the state/establishment.

UF picked up a couple of solid 3 star commits at Friday Night Lights for the 16 recruiting class, a center and a safety.
A 4 star WR committed for the 17 class.
There may be another commitment or two over the next couple of days with a 4 star DE being mentioned as a possibility.
UF is now on the radar of a couple of 5 star recruits after their visits to Gainesville. Nothing is going to happen with those guys until much later in the process.

Valentine was always a huge question mark considering he transferred to a Hialeah strip mall high school for his senior year, where he was a 4.0 student after having a sub 2.0 his first three years. There was always great concern he would never qualify and, if he did, would never be able to do college level work to stay eligible. Bostwick on the other hand, I know nada about. One article I read said something about being homesick, but damn, Gainesville isn't all that far from Fort Lauderdale.

Florida wide receiver Alvin Bailey spent five hours in Hillsborough County Jail on Saturday for failing to appear in court on a second-degree misdemeanor traffic citation.
Bailey, 20, was booked at 5:07 p.m. and released at 10 on $5,000 bond, according to Hillsborough County Jail records.
He had been cited May 12 for driving with a suspended or revoked license, his second offense, and a warrant was issued for his arrest June 9 when he missed his scheduled arraignment, according to Hillsborough County court records.
Bailey is entering his redshirt sophomore season at UF and did not record any statistics in six games last year.

Yall are having a bit of a rough off season. Bet you will be happy to see camp start up. It's nickel and dime stuff, but that means a lack of focus. This team can't afford to be anything other than 110% committed and focused on football. The players reports to camp on 8/5 and practices start on 8/6. It looks like McElwain and staff still have to whip them into a team.
