What the preseason rags are saying about UF - this from SEC Country:
We reviewed five preseason magazines — Athlon, ESPN, Lindy’s, Phil Steele and The Sporting News — and broke down their team-by-team predictions.
Tuesday, we examine Florida. Here is what’s being said about the Gators:
Phil Steele (2nd in SEC East [tied] — TaxSlayer Bowl): “Florida has the advantage of having only three true SEC road games this year, with UGA being at a neutral site. If they take care of business there, the Gators have beaten Tennessee 11 straight seasons and should they continue that streak, they could be in a second straight SEC title game.”
Athlon (3rd in SEC East — No. 21, 8-4, TaxSlayer Bowl): “To get back to the SEC title game, (coach Jim) McElwain will need to develop a reliable offense despite a litany of unknowns … The encore could be a bigger test of his coaching; these Gators will not sneak up on anyone.”
Sporting News (3rd in SEC East — Liberty Bowl): “If the Gators can continue their hex on the Vols and get productive play at quarterback, their defense should be good enough again to make them competitive with Tennessee and Georgia for the SEC East crown.”
Lindy’s (3rd in SEC East): “Florida should be able to lean on a terrific defense … The offense will need time to jell due to new players at virtually all of the skill positions, but the talent level is improving there thanks to McElwain.”
ESPN (3rd in SEC East — 7.4 projected wins): “The offense still faces major hurdles, but the defense will be elite again, so Florida will contend once more for the SEC East in McElwain’s encore.”
Preseason All-American selections: Jalen Tabor (1st x3, 2nd x1), Jarrad Davis (1st x1, 2nd x1), Marcus May (1st x1, 3rd x1), Johnny Townsend (2nd x1), Antonio Callaway (3rd x1), Martez Ivey (4th x1), Eddie Pineiro (4th x1)
Preseason All-SEC selections: Jalen Tabor (1st, unanimous), Jarrad Davis (1st x2, 2nd x1), Johnny Townsend (1st x2, 2nd x3), Martez Ivey (2nd x2), Caleb Brantley (1st x1, 2nd x1, 4th x1), Marcus Maye (2nd x3), Eddie Pineiro (2nd x1), David Sharpe (3rd x2), Antonio Callaway (2nd x1, 3rd x1), Cece Jefferson (3rd x1), Bryan Cox, Jr. (4th x1)
More notes •Athlon spoke to an anonymous coach who had high praise for McElwain’s first year: “I don’t know if anyone has deserved SEC Coach of the Year more than Jim McElwain last year because they coached their everloving tail off on offense to get as close as they got (to a championship).” •ESPN spoke to an anonymous coach about Luke Del Rio: “He’s a walk-on QB at best. He’ll be more of that Will Grier type, where he’s going to manage it and they’ll build that offense around his qualities — quick reads, quick decisions, drop back and throw it deep on a go route.” •Phil Steele listed Florida No. 22 in his “Power Poll,” which was based on talent only. He listed Florida No. 34 in his season predictions. •ESPN’s Football Power Index lists two games as Florida’s toughest to win: at Tennessee (19 percent chance of victory) and at Florida State (14 percent). •Sporting News named Luke Del Rio the SEC’s “Top Transfer,” noting he will get the most chances of anyone to “revive Florida’s slumbering offense.” •Athlon noted the 2015 Gators defense finished No. 4 in the nation in “field position,” meaning Florida consistently forced opponents into tough situations by halting their progress on consecutive drives. •Athlon named defensive end Cece Jefferson one of its 15 “Breakout Players” across the country. •Lindy’s named Florida’s defensive backfield the best in the nation. Alongside star cornerback Jalen Tabor, safety Marcus Maye got some love: “Maye is a big-time playmaker (seven career forced fumbles) and could give the Gators a double-shot of All-American DBs.” •Lindy’s named Antonio Callaway the SEC’s “most dangerous deep threat,” and Jalen Tabor the conference’s “best cover corner.” The magazine also listed Tabor No. 5 in its collection of the SEC’s best NFL prospects.

Since he only has 1 year left to play, I'm guessing Austin Appleby will be given a ship during summer camp. I think Appleby will back up Luke Del Rio presuming he doesn't win the starting QB competition. He too deserves a ship for that. Since UF is under the 85 limit, it shouldn't be a problem to reward Appleby. This from SEC Country:
Florida’s potential starting quarterback for 2016 is no longer a walk-on.
Luke Del Rio revealed Wednesday on Twitter he’s now on scholarship at UF. The redshirt sophomore transferred from Oregon State last summer and had been a walk-on with the Gators through this past spring.
Del Rio turned down a few offers in high school, including one from Jim McElwain at Colorado State, to join Alabama’s program as a walk-on in 2013. He left for Oregon State the following year and was on scholarship there for one season.
After sitting out 2015 due to NCAA transfer rules, Del Rio heads into Florida’s preseason camp next month with an edge over graduate transfer Austin Appleby, who was also a walk-on in the spring.

SEC Media Days starts Monday, 7/11:
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The 2016 SEC Football Media Days start Monday and Gators head coach Jim McElwain will be joined by linebacker Jarrad Davis, defensive back Marcus Maye and offensive lineman David Sharpe.
The SEC office on Wednesday announced the full list of players attending the four-day media festival, which runs Monday through Thursday in Hoover, Ala. The Gators will attend the event Monday along with Auburn and Vanderbilt.
The Gators return to Media Days as the defending SEC East champions for the first time in six years. In McElwain's first season, the Gators finished 10-4 and advanced to the SEC Championship Game in Atlanta, where they lost to SEC West champion Alabama.
As McElwain enters his second season, Florida's most experienced starter on the offensive line is the 6-foot-6, 347-pound Sharpe, who started 13 games as a sophomore and is projected to start at left tackle. Sharpe drew praise from McElwain throughout spring camp for his development since the end of last season.
"David Sharpe stepped up his leadership and his work day-to-day in practices," McElwain said after the Orange & Blue Debut. "He's become a true leader. It's good to see."
Meanwhile, a pair of veteran defensive stalwarts will join Sharpe.
Davis blossomed into one of the SEC's top linebackers a season ago and opted to return for his senior season. He will be relied on for some of the leadership lost by linebacker Antonio Morrison from a season ago.
Davis finished second on the team last season with 98 tackles, including 11 tackles-for-loss and 3.5 sacks. McElwain credited Davis with taking over as a key team leader as soon as last season ended. He was named to Bednarik Award Watch List earlier this week, as was Maye and junior cornerback Jalen Tabor.
Maye, like Davis, had the best season of his career in 2015, earning First Team All-American honors from USA Today and Pro Football Focus. A fifth-year senior, Maye had 82 tackles and forced five fumbles a year ago, which ranked second in the country.
"Marcus Maye coming back, that was huge,'' McElwain said.
The SEC Network will be broadcasting live from Media Days all next week, starting Monday when the Gators make their appearance. SEC FOOTBALL MEDIA DAYS

2016 UF roster updates from Zach A. at SEC Country:
Florida released its 2016 media football guide Sunday ahead of SEC Media Days this week.
The Gators are the second team to take the podium Monday. UF coach Jim McElwain will be joined by linebacker Jarrad Davis, safety Marcus Maye and offensive tackle David Sharpe.
Here are some notes from Florida’s updated roster:
•Star wide receiver Antonio Callaway and former starting quarterback Treon Harris remain on the roster. Both Miami players were suspended in January for student code of conduct violations. Last month, Callaway and Harris had their suspensions modified and were allowed to return to campus for classes and team workouts. Florida has yet to announce the status of both players for the fall. Harris, who may switch to wide receiver, is still listed as a quarterback.
•The roster doesn’t show any new position changes.
•Linebacker Alex Anzalone is now classified as a redshirt junior. He presumably has received a medical redshirt after missing all but two games last season with a shoulder injury. Anzalone was listed as a senior in the spring.
•There are no new transfers for the Gators. Wide receivers Alvin Bailey and Ryan Sousa left the program following spring football. Sousa, now at Southern Illinois, is mistakenly included on Florida’s updated roster.
•The new weight for offensive guard Brandon Sandifer is not yet reflected on the roster. He’s still listed at 339 pounds, which is what he weighed at the start of spring practice. But Sandifer tweeted a picture of himself in May and said he was down to 315 pounds.
•The jersey numbers for the remaining 2016 signees have been assigned. There are as follows:
◾No. 2 Tyrie Cleveland, WR ◾No. 11 Vosean Joseph, LB ◾No. 12 C.J. McWilliams, CB ◾No. 22 Lamical Perine, RB ◾No. 27 Quincy Lenton, S ◾No. 29 Jeawon Taylor, S ◾No. 35 Joseph Putu, CB (arrives in August) ◾No. 50 Jeremiah Moon, LB ◾No. 61 Brett Heggie, OL ◾No. 65 Jawaan Taylor, OL ◾No. 83 Rick Wells, WR ◾No. 90 Antonneous Clayton, DE ◾No. 99 Jachai Polite, DE

HOOVER, Ala. — We have a champion. Well, a preseason champion.
The SEC media in Hoover Ala. predicted the conference champion for 2016 and Alabama is expected to take home the title for the third consecutive season. The contingent at SEC Media Days projects that Tennessee will take on Alabama in Atlanta.
Alabama, of course, took home the SEC championship last season in a 29-15 win over Florida.
Don’t put too much stock into the prediction as the media has failed to correctly predict the SEC champion 18 times since 1992. Last year, the media predicted Alabama to win the SEC West — and, inexplicably, thanks to a weird points system, predicted Auburn to win the conference. Those Tigers, of course, finished the regular season 6-6 with a near-loss to FCS team Jacksonville State.

The Treon Harris move to WR which has been long rumored is official. I hope Treon makes the best of his opportunities. The QB position for 2016 is set. This from Zach A. at SEC Country:
Former Florida starting quarterback Treon Harris has indeed made the move to wide receiver.
Gators coach Jim McElwain confirmed the position change on Ivan Maisel’s ESPN podcast.
“You’ve got to look at the fit,” McElwain said. “Nothing he did. Guys around him didn’t play great either. So I’ll never put that on a player.”
Florida jumped out to a 6-0 start in 2015, but finished the season 4-4 with Treon Harris under center following the suspension of starter Will Grier. Grier transferred to West Virginia after the season.
It was reported in February that Harris would move to wide receiver this year after struggling in McElwain’s offense. Harris was allowed to return to campus last month for team workouts and classes, but hasn’t been fully reinstated from his January suspension for a student code of conduct violation.
Harris missed all of spring football as the Gators went through practice with four new players at quarterback.
“Everybody has freedom, he doesn’t have to stay there,” McElwain said when asked how Harris handled switching positions. “But at the end of the day, look, we’re in this not here to hurt anybody’s feelings. But at the same time, it is what it is and we’ve got four guys who I’m really proud of. The room is really good and I’m excited about it.”
Zach Abolverdi is the Florida beat writer for SEC Country and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Is Calloway officially back with the team? What's the status of the new kids who were arrested a week or two ago? There is no change yet with Callaway or Harris. They are both still under a partial suspension.
The youngsters will have the charges reduced to likely end with probation/community service/payback the damage and both will be punished by UF internally, I'm guessing that there will be a lot of steps to run and a game suspension for both.

Appropriate. About what I would have expected. Hopefully it is a good lesson learned.

UF an early favorite with 2018 pro-style QB. This from Zach A. at SEC Country:
Artur Sitkowski wows at Florida’s QB camp, has family connection to Gators
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Florida held its Next Level QB Camp on Thursday in the indoor practice facility.
UF coach Jim McElwain and offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier had several high-profile quarterback trainers on hand, including Elite 11 coach George Whitfield, Jr.
Gators commit Jake Allen won’t throw until Friday, which allowed 2018 quarterback Artur Sitkowski (Old Bridge, N.J.) to steal the show. He was the top performer among the campers Thursday.
“I learned so much from these coaches today,” Sitkowski said afterward. “Coach Nuss, coach McElwain, coach Whitfield — the staff they assembled for this camp was second to none. It’s an incredible experience.”
Sitkowski is ranked the No. 4 pro-style quarterback and No. 71 overall recruit in the Class of 2018. He told SEC Country he wanted to camp at Florida because of the QB track records of McElwain and Nussmeier.
“It’s the Florida Gators,” Sitkowski said. “Coach McElwain has had a lot of success coaching quarterbacks, and so has coach Nuss. So just the attraction of SEC football, big-time quarterback play, that’s probably the two biggest reasons why.”
Sitkowski already holds offers from more than a dozen schools, including Michigan, Ohio State and South Carolina. The 6-foot-4, 215-pound passer probably could have landed a UF offer without camping, but he wanted to earn it.
“My parents instilled in me at a young age that you have to work hard for things in life,” Sitkowski said. “If something is given to you in life, it’s not worth it. I’m going against the best quarterbacks in the country out here. There’s some elite arms out here throwing, so I’m just competing and trying to earn that offer.”
The Gators will likely pull the trigger following his impressive workout, and they could become a major player in his recruitment.
“It would be huge for me,” Sitkowski said of the potential offer. “Florida is a state that I have family in. My aunt and grandmother live (in Tampa). My aunt is a season ticket holder. She’s a Gator fan, so I have a little soft spot for the Gators.
“She’s pulling for the Gators (in recruiting). She wants to see me more often. She tells me I look good in blue and orange.”
The 4-star quarterback attended Florida’s regular season finale against rival Florida State in 2013.
“That was insane,” Sitkowski said of the gameday atmosphere. “I can really see myself going to class here, being a student here, playing football here at the University of Florida. This is one of the few schools I can actually see myself at.”
Sitkowski said North Carolina, Ohio State and South Carolina are the schools sticking out to him right now, but he likes the idea of playing in the SEC.
“It is the best conference,” said Sitkowski, who plans to make his decision next spring. “On Saturday night, who’s playing? SEC teams. Alabama, Florida, South Carolina. They get all that exposure. A lot of players that get drafted come out of the SEC.”
