UF adds a CB commit out of Miami Southridge and now has 16 recruits in the 17 class. The film on Shawn Davis looks good. He doesn't look like a 3-star player and his offer list supports what the film reveals. If he has a good senior season, it wouldn't surprise me to see him upgraded to 4 stars:
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The Gators have landed yet another South Florida recruit, this time from Miami.
Coveted cornerback Shawn Davis joined the class Saturday, committing to UF over Alabama, Florida State, Miami and Tennessee.
His decision came down to the Gators and hometown Hurricanes, but Davis chose to spend his college years in Gainesville, Fla.
“Growing up Florida was always my favorite school,” Davis said. “A degree from UF holds more weight than other schools. I’m not too far from home, and they have a tradition of DB’s going to the NFL.”
Linebackers coach Randy Shannon and secondary coach Torrian Gray primarily recruited Davis, and on-campus recruiting director John Herron used to coach at his high school. Davis visited UF in March, April, June and July with his Southridge teammate, Gators tight end commit Kemore Gamble.
Davis is eyeing early playing time at Florida, but knows he’ll have to earn it from the staff.
“They didn’t promise me anything but an opportunity,” Davis said. “It’s up to me to determine how much I play, but they are looking for DB’s. I think they can develop me into an NFL player.”
Davis is the state’s No. 10-ranked cornerback and has a 3-star rating, but his offer list of more than two dozen schools also includes Auburn, Georgia, LSU, Ole Miss and South Carolina.
The 5-foot-11, 190-pounder is a versatile defensive back, but he’ll line up at corner for the Gators.
“I’m able to move around in the secondary,” Davis said. “I can play press man, off coverage, safety, anything.”
UF now has 16 class members for 2017 with the additions of Davis and 4-star defensive tackle Fred Hansard who committed Friday. Six of the Gators’ pledges are from South Florida.
Unless otherwise indicated, ratings and rankings come from the 247Sports Composite.

Mac's Monday presser:
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — As Florida kicks off its first game week, head coach Jim McElwain met with reporters to discuss the Gators’ season opener with Massachusetts on Saturday.
Here were the highlights from his press conference.
•McElwain’s opening comments: “This is an exciting time for everybody. I know our guys are excited. They can kind of smell it in the air. Opening weekend. Really excited about getting back in The Swamp and getting that energy back. As I said time and time again, that energy in The Swamp was unbelievable last year. It helped us every time we were there.” •On UMass: “Coach Whipple is a guy who has obviously won a national title there when they were I-AA. … I’ve got a ton of respect for (him) when he was there at Miami with Randy (Shannon). … I think he just does an outstanding job. … Obviously the running back is a guy we have to make sure doesn’t get loose. He had a 100-yard game at Notre Dame a year ago. … He does a lot of things formationally, which we’ve got to be very sound in everything we do. … Defensively, it will be a great test for our offensive line with their defensive line movement. … Luke’s really going to have to do a great job of keying safeties to know what’s going on … But it has as much to do with what we’re trying to do. It’s about us. … We’ve obviously broke down two years of their film, the fake punts that they run in big games that show up. It’s really about the unknown, and that’s the great thing about opening games. They’ve had the whole offseason to make some changes. I think the key is playing fast, being sound in what you do and being able to adjust to whatever comes up.” •On injuries: WR C.J. Worton will be out there in limited reps. OL Andrew Mike and RB Jordan Cronkrite “should be fully back.” DeAndre Goolsby is “still a little banged up,” but expected to be able to go later in the week. “Other than that, we’re in pretty good shape.” •On response to QB Luke Del Rio: “There seems to be a real kind of settling in there as far as that voice in the huddle, which is a good thing. I think as time goes that’s one of those deals that you’ve got to continue to move forward with that leadership and that voice. And yet, I’ve been reminded, I think there was one SEC championship here by a guy that is an ambassador to us that I think a couple guys started four games a piece or something during that run. But I think the key is our guys settling into that voice and feel(ing) comfortable with his leadership back there.” •What does McElwain tell Del Rio about managing first start: “Something Nuss and I talk about quite a bit is we kind of forget that this is his first go round. It’s almost like we expect him to do things a little bit like a veteran in how he approaches it and the decisions we make, and yet we’ve got to be conscious of the fact that, I don’t care who you are, this is the first time being out there and being the leader of the Florida Gators. I think the big thing for him is, as I constantly will tell him, first off, what color jerseys we’re going to be wearing that day and it would be a pretty good idea to throw it to those colored jerseys. And then the second thing is take what the defense gives you and eventually they’ll give you the game. Remembering some of those things when you go in as an early starter, I think, is huge.” •On freshmen QBs Feleipe Franks and Kyle Trask: “That’s a good question and it’s something we’re talking about right now. I’d like to be able to get those guys some reps if possible because obviously we’ve got to have an established third at some point. And we’ll see where it goes from there. We haven’t made a definitive decision yet on that, and yet that’s something we need to look down the road at, no doubt about it. … Right now you just never know. If you had a crystal ball, I think that’d be ideal. But I do know this, we’ve got to prepare somebody to play in that spot and both of those guys have done a really good job.” •On discipline actions/suspensions: “We’ve had some guys that obviously have made some choices not to play in this game. … We’ve had a couple freshmen that probably won’t be going and a senior that made some choices, and those guys will join us when the time is ready.” McElwain confirmed the two freshmen who are being held out are receivers Tyrie Cleveland and Rick Wells. He did not say who the senior is. •On the RB order: “There’s going to be a lot out there. … I think (Jordan) Scarlett probably, Mark Thompson, Jordan (Cronkrite) obviously has had some days off. He was probably the No. 1 guy there before then, but he should be ready to go, and we’ll see Lamical (Perine). And then (Mark) Herndon, of course, will play not only on all special teams, but in some (other packages). All of those guys will see time.” •On Antonio Callaway’s situation: “Yeah, he should be ready to go. … That guy’s a pretty good player, so I think it should be pretty good.” Said decision came Friday. “I can’t talk about it, so …” •McElwain on addressing the way the last season ended: “I’m still hurting, that’s all I can say. That was miserable. I’ll leave it at that.”

2016 Season Opening Depth Chart - paqe 5 of UMass pregame notes:
sidearm.sites.s3.amazonaws.com/gatorzone.com/documents/2016/8/26/UMass_Public.pdf
A few things on the depth chart:
1. Kylan Johnson (LB) is 231, not 216 2. Jalen "Teez" Tabor (CB) is suspended for game 1 - He would be starting where Duke Dawson is listed - Dawson can play CB/Nickel/Safety 3. Cyontai Lewis (TE) is suspended for game 1 - He would be the 2 behind DeAndre Goolsby

Cleared of sexual assault earlier this month, Florida sophomore wide receiver Antonio Callaway has now been cleared to play in Saturday night’s opener against UMass.
“Yeah, he should be ready to go,” UF coach Jim McElwain said Monday.
The decision whether Callaway would be eligible for the opener was made by the university, which cleared him late last week, McElwain said.
“It would probably have been Friday, I guess,” McElwain said. “From the standpoint of the decision, I can’t talk about it.”
While Callaway is in, three other players are out, suspended from the opener. McElwain announced that two freshmen and one senior will have to sit out the game.
He confirmed that the two freshmen are wide receivers Tyrie Cleveland and Rick Wells, who are facing a felony charge for their BB gun incident on campus in July.
McElwain was not asked which senior has been suspended, but it appears to be wide receiver Chris Thompson, who is not listed on the depth chart the school released Monday afternoon.
Thompson, Cleveland and Wells join two players who were already on the suspension list for Saturday’s game — All-SEC cornerback Jalen Tabor and No. 2 tight end C’yontai Lewis — bringing the total to five suspended players. Tabor and Lewis picked up their suspensions for fighting each other in practice two weeks ago.
"We've had some guys that obviously made some choices not to play in this game,” McElwain said. “We have a couple freshmen that won't be going and a senior that made some choices. Yet those guys will join us when the time's ready."

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — So, do you know the Mr. Two Bits routine?
"What?" Steve Spurrier shot back incredulously from behind his desk. "You mean, 'Two bits, four bits, six bits, a dollar! All for the Gators stand up and holler?' "
OK, so the question wasn't phrased particularly well.
Of course, the greatest Gator of them all would know the celebrated George Edmondson cheer. From back in his playing days more than a half-century ago, Spurrier watched Edmondson dash energetically through the stadium, blowing his whistle and getting the Florida Field crowd going. In fact, when Spurrier arrived as a UF freshman in 1964, Edmondson was in his 15th season doing his "Two Bits" deal.
But with the famous chant, comes some body movement. Yes, a so-called "routine." And the crowd that files in for Saturday night's season opener against Massachusetts — the one on hand when the title "Steve Spurrier-Florida Field at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium" is officially dedicated — will be expecting to see the Heisman Trophy quarterback and winningest coach in UF history make some Edmondson-like moves.
Errict Rhett did it. So did the likes of Danny Wuerffel, Chris DiMarco, Hannah Rogers, Alex Brown and Thaddeus Bullard since the pre-game celebrity Mr. Two Bits tradition was born in 2013.
For this game, could there be any other choice to do the honors?
And execute the routine?
"Sure, I'll do a little something," Spurrier said. "I may have to wind it up like I did when Terry Jackson scored his touchdown against FSU [in the national championship game]."
Yeah, that'll work.

Tim Skipper on the RBs - UF runs 5 deep:
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Florida was expected to have a three-headed monster at running back this season.
Make it five.
In addition to Jordan Cronkrite, Jordan Scarlett and Mark Thompson, former walk-on Mark Herndon and true freshman Lamical Perine successfully made their case for playing time in fall camp.
Every ball carrier will see action in Saturday’s season opener against UMass at 7:30 p.m. on SEC Network.
“We have five guys that can go into that game,” Florida running backs coach Tim Skipper said Wednesday. “You’ve got Herndon, you’ve got Perine, you’ve got Cronk, you’ve got Scarlett and you’ve got Mark Thompson.
“All those guys are going to play. How exactly we do it, you’re just going to have to wait and find out.”
Skipper said he’ll determine how to distribute carries after Thursday’s practice. Scarlett and Thompson are expected to be the first backs on the field.
“Jordan Scarlett had a great camp,” Skipper said. “I think he’s put on probably about 10 pounds of muscle. … He has a better understanding of our offense also. You can see he doesn’t have that little hesitation in his step running the ball. I think he’s really comfortable in what he’s doing.”
“(Thompson) had a real good fall. I think he’ll tell you this, when he was in here in the spring it was a culture shock to him, just the pace of practice and how serious it is and how organized it is and all that. It was a different game. Now he can get through the whole practice.”
Cronkrite saw the most time with the first-team offense during spring football and fall camp, but he was injured in the Aug. 19 scrimmage and returned to practice Monday. Skipper hasn’t seen Cronkrite miss a beat this week.
“He practiced (Tuesday) and it was full throttle, full pads and he did every drill,” Skipper said. “It wasn’t like he had to stand out in certain stuff. He went live all the way through. So, really good shape there. He’s full go. It shouldn’t be any issues.”
Herndon is a redshirt senior who’s played every year, so his involvement comes as no surprise. Perine, however, was a redshirt candidate because of the depth at running back. His play in practice has axed that possibility.
“The thing I like about him more than anything is he’s a freshman but you wouldn’t know it,” Skipper said. “Most of the time freshmen in training camp, they hit that wall. He never really hit that wall. He got stronger as he kept going. So I’m really excited about the things he did.”
Skipper said the five players are multi-talented and can each handle the various running back responsibilities. A planned rotation will be in place going into Saturday’s game, but Skipper will also go with the hot hand at times.
“Somebody gets hot, they’re going to be in there,” Skipper said. “Like I tell the guys, ‘You get an opportunity you make the most of it. If you do, you’re going to get more. If not, then the next guy is up.’
“It will be structured deal at first and then once we figure out who is hot and which plays we have to run to win the game, that’s where we’ll go.”

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Prior to 2015, Florida hadn’t had much success recruiting or producing running backs in the last decade.
That has quickly changed under Gators coach Jim McElwain and running backs coach Tim Skipper. 49ers rookie Kelvin Taylor had a breakout season at UF last year, becoming just the ninth player in school history and only the second since 2004 to rush for more than 1,000 yards.
On the recruiting front, the Gators have landed — and in one case flipped — four Alabama-style backs with the Crimson Tide offers in the last two signing classes under McElwain. He and Skipper wanted to get stronger and more physical at the position, and they’ve done that with Jordan Cronkrite, Jordan Scarlett, Lamical Perine and Mark Thompson.
But Florida isn’t necessarily looking for the same type of back in every recruiting cycle.
“It kind of changes as you go,” Skipper said Wednesday. “So last year, when we were recruiting, we wanted to get a lot bigger. So you know you bring in bigger guys. You bring in the Mark Thompson type of bodies. Even Jordan Scarlett is a bigger guy. Then as you look at the group now, what are you going to bring in next? That’s kind of what we’re looking at.”
This year the Gators have a commitment from Adarius Lemons, a 4-star prospect from Clearwater, Fla., who is ranked the state’s No. 1 running back for the Class of 2017. Lemons has size at 6-foot-1, 195 pounds, but he’s faster and shiftier than the previous four backs UF has brought in.
Lemons is also a home-run threat that can score on any given play.
“I think as you always start with running backs, you want a playmaker, somebody that can go the distance when he touches it,” Skipper said. “The second thing and most important thing to some people is his blocking. Is he a tough guy? Can he handle the pounding of the SEC? That’s two important things.”
With Lemons in the fold, the Gators will have a talented backfield for several years to come. And they’re also in contention next year for 5-star backs Lorenzo Lingard and Ricky Slade, who named Florida in his top 5 this month.
“When you’re recruiting or building a team, you’re trying to get as many guys as you can that can help,” Skipper said. “That’s what we’ve done under Coach Mac. This Year 2, I think we’ve really addressed the running back position.”

On a rainy night with a wet field, UF passed 44 times and ran 29 times. I'm thinking Mac sandbagged a bit on what he wanted to show in week 1. All in all, it was a typical opening game. Mac gets to grind the team to get better and UF got another opening week win:

Two notable injuries to starters - hope neither are season ending:
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — One of the Florida Gators’ preseason stars and a projected key cog in the secondary both left with injuries during the season opener Saturday night, and coach Jim McElwain didn’t offer any specifics as to the severity of either.
Junior slot receiver Dre Massey, who generated considerable hype over the last month, went down in the first half with a knee injury, and junior nickelback/cornerback Duke Dawson left with an unspecified arm injury.
“Dre Massey went down early. We’re going to have to take a good look at that. I’m not sure where that’s going to be,” McElwain said. “Duke Dawson went down with an arm injury. We’ll get that looked at. We held him out, but it enabled us to get Chauncey and Putu and Chris in there at corner a little bit. I thought that was good. That’s going to help us down the road a little bit.”
Massey, a junior college newcomer, forced his way atop the depth chart at slot receiver this preseason while pushing junior Brandon Powell to the outside. At least, that was the Gators’ plan coming into the night.
Massey didn’t catch any passes before going down with the injury. McElwain was asked if his eventual absence altered the game plan at all.
“There (were) some things we were going to do with him that we obviously held out. But we’ll go back and do some more,” he said.
Meanwhile, Dawson had been projected as a first-team cornerback this week as the Gators were also without junior star corner Jalen Tabor, who was serving a one-game suspension.
Like McElwain said, the absence of both led to more opportunities for sophomore Chris Williamson, true freshman Chauncey Gardner Jr. and junior newcomer Joseph Putu.
Williamson had a tough night, getting beat at the end of the first quarter for a 24-yard completion on fourth-and-14 and later for a 53-yard stop-and-go completion in the second quarter. Gardner finished with three tackles and a pass break-up.
Tabor will be back next week when Florida hosts Kentucky.
As for Massey and Dawson, McElwain will meet with the media again Monday, perhaps with a clearer indication of their statuses.

Typical opener for uf?? It was 10-7 heading into the 4th qtr vs a 36 ot underdog. Other than spurrier doing the usain bolt pose (saw video of that last night... Spurrier was always having his teams questioned after openers then the Gators would play UT and look just fine. We'll see, but I'm not worried. It's 1 win down and 14 to go. However, Spurrier agrees a bit with you. He thought the OL did good, the ESPN announcers graded them a B while saying the vols OL was a D, and he thought the offense should run the ball more. That was at halftime. Looking at the final pass to run ratio, the HBC was right. Again, I think Mac sandbagged a bit like the HBC used to do early on. We'll see more this week against UK.

Good injury news. Duke Dawson tweeted this AM that he is fine and will be back for UK. That puts him back as the starting nickel back as Jalen Tabor will be back off suspension for UK too.
I'm still holding my breath on Dre Massey. I just hope his knee injury isn't season ending.

I was impressed with both true freshmen WRs who played last night. Josh Hammond had 5 catches and Freddie Swain had 2 catches. On Brandon Powell's 26 yard catch/run for a TD in the 4th quarter, Swain showed maturity in backing off a block in the back that would have brought the score back to the point of the foul along with a 10 yard penalty. I've seen too many true freshmen WRs over the years that would have unloaded on the DB when they didn't have to. To me, that was just as important as Powell's catch and run for the TD.
