What the article above missed was Bryan Cox Jr. was so limited he didn't play and neither did Jordan Sherit, the other starting DE. The defense turned in a great performance playing a bunch of Baby Gators. UF was even playing the walk on Christian Garcia at MLB when we had another injury at MLB.
Stopping an Iowa team when Kirk Ferentz was intent on running the ball down the throats of the Gators was no small accomplishment. The goal line stand was a thing of beauty. I'm thinking Mac needs to remove the interim off of Randy Shannon while allowing him to remain an associate head coach. Shannon was largely responsible for the win yesterday.

By my count, there were 10 Gator starters who missed the Iowa game. I'd give an overall grade of B+ due to the 2 INTs by the starting QB who caused the offense to sputter too much by taking sacks and not getting the ball out quickly enough and often enough to playmakers. Zach A. of SEC Country grades UF:
TAMPA, Fla. — Here are the grades from Florida’s 30-3 win against Iowa on Monday.
Offense: B For the second consecutive game, quarterback Austin Appleby threw 2 interceptions in the first quarter. But Iowa wasn’t able to capitalize on those turnovers the way Alabama did, and Appleby rebounded from those picks. He finished the game with 222 yards and 2 touchdowns on 14-of-25 passing. On the Gators’ 12-play, 80-yard scoring drive that put them ahead 17-3, Appleby competed 5 of his 6 pass attempts for 62 yards and threw a touchdown — twice. The Gators still have room for improvement at the quarterback position, but they have some playmakers in Antonio Callaway, Tyrie Cleveland and Jordan Scarlett, who rushed for 94 yards on 14 carriers against the Hawkeyes. Callaway led the team with 7 catches for 55 yards. Cleveland made a pair of impressive catches in the game, but his TD catch was negated because of a penalty.
Defense: A The Hawkeyes were able to run the ball against Florida, but that goal-line stand was huge by the Gators. Like the final play of the LSU game, UF safety Marcell Harris made the stop on Iowa’s fourth-down run and led the team in tackles (9). When Florida took a 17-3 lead, it forced the Hawkeyes to start throwing the ball and that sealed their fate. Quarterback C.J. Beathard was held to 55 passing yards and threw 3 interceptions in the fourth quarter. Interim coordinator Randy Shannon put together an effective plan for the Hawkeyes and called a great game. Despite the injuries at linebacker and Kylan Johnson going down in the first half, Daniel McMillian (7 tackles, 1 interception) and Vosean Joseph (6 tackles, 1 TFL, 1 PBU) had breakout performances in Shannon’s scheme. And safety Chauncey Gardner, who was coached by Shannon during bowl prep, earned MVP honors with his 2 picks.
Special teams: A With Eddy Pineiro’s three field goals Monday, he finished the season with 12 consecutive kicks made and was 21-of-25 for the year. His percentage rate (84.0) is the best mark by a Florida kicker with at least 20 attempts since Caleb Sturgis in 2012 (85.7). Johnny Townsend hit a pair of punts inside the 20 with a long of 51, and Callaway had two nice punt returns.
Coaching: A In total, the Gators had 19 players miss the Outback Bowl due to injury and had to replace their defensive coordinator. Nine of those players would have started the game had they been healthy. For the staff to have that many injuries and still get this team to play as well as it did, it was an impressive coaching job.
Overall: A There was some serious doubts about the Gators considering their lack of the depth and the beatdown they took from Alabama in the SEC Championship Game. But these coaches and players were able to regroup in December and gave an admirable showing in Tampa. Make no mistake, this was a huge win for UF coach Jim McElwain and his program.

The bowl game was a pleasant surprise. I agree that the performance the defense gave considering how many starters were out was pretty amazing.
With the problems we were having on offense, the main thing I wanted was for the non-shutout streak to continue. UF has now scored in 361 consecutive games. The NCAA record is 365, held by Michigan. An interesting little backstory to next years season opener.

An interesting little backstory to next years season opener. Well, I know this for damn sure, Michigan isn't going to shutout UF. I fully expect the Gators to be much improved even though we are losing a lot as we have already lost a lot due to injuries. My gut says we're going to kick Michigan butt in Dallas. If we can get good QB play, UF is capable of having a special season, a championship season, in 17. The schedule is favorable, hurricanes not being part of the process, for a championship run. It's time to dethrone bama and look for a return to the top nationally.

Reporting to campus will be defensive tackle Kyree Campbell, defensive back Shawn Davis, tight end Kemore Gamble, linebacker James Houston, offensive tackle Kadeem Telfort and athlete Kadarius Toney. Florida began officially welcoming those recruits to the program Wednesday.

Excellent move - Randy Shannon promoted to defensive coordinator:
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Randy Shannon has been promoted to defensive coordinator, University of Florida head coach Jim McElwain announced Friday. Shannon previously coached linebackers for the last two seasons at Florida and has also served as the associate head coach and co-defensive coordinator. This will be Shannon's third stint as a defensive coordinator. His first was spent in the NFL with the Miami Dolphins (1998-99), and his second helped produce a national championship during a six-year term in the position at his alma mater, Miami (FL) (2001-06). Since McElwain and Shannon's arrival two years ago, Florida has boasted a top-10 defense nationally. After ranking seventh defensively in the country a season ago and despite losing five starters to the NFL, including two first-round picks, the Gators were even better on defense this season. Entering Monday's national championship game between Clemson and Alabama, UF sits fifth nationally (second in the SEC) in total defense, allowing just 293.0 yards per game. In addition, UF has the top pass defense in the conference and the second-best in the country, allowing opponents to tally just 148.5 yards per game through the air. Overall this season, UF surrendered just 3,809 total yards, the fifth-lowest amount allowed nationally. Shannon was an all-state football player at Miami Norland, started at linebacker for UM's 1987 national championship team, played 17 games over two seasons for the Dallas Cowboys and distinguished himself for his defensive acumen as an assistant coach for the Miami Dolphins (1998-2000) and Miami Hurricanes (1991-97, 2001-06) before being promoted to replace Larry Coker as UM's head coach in December 2006. Shannon has led some of the best defenses in recent history as both head coach and defensive coordinator at Miami. In his 17 years there, Shannon coached 14 defensive players that were selected in the first round of the NFL Draft. A three-time national champion as a player (1987, 1989) and coach (2001), Shannon arrived at Arkansas in 2013 as the Razorbacks' linebackers coach before being promoted to senior associate head coach the following season. Shannon coached linebackers at TCU in 2012 following his aforementioned four-year stint as head coach at Miami (2007-10). WHAT THEY'RE SAYING Head Coach Jim McElwain: "Coach Shannon has been a big part of our success over the last two years. It's been really cool to watch him handle his business. He really connects with our players and they have a lot of respect for him. More than being a great coach, he is a great mentor and teacher to these young men and that is one of our greatest measuring sticks as coaches." Defensive Coordinator Randy Shannon: "I appreciate the opportunity Coach Mac has given me to be the defensive coordinator at the University of Florida. We will continue to work together as we have the past two years to put together a plan so our players are in a position to be successful in football and in life."

Junior NFL Draft Decisions:
Duke Dawson - Returning
David Sharpe - Leaving Quincy Wilson - Leaving Jalen Tabor - Leaving Alex Anzalone - Leaving Caleb Brantley - Leaving
Senior Graduate Transfer:
Cameron Dillard
Jordan Sherit, junior WDE, looks like he may be returning for his senior season. I didn't list Sherit as an NFL draft decision because he hasn't been mentioned as such. That doesn't mean he can't forego his senior season and opt for free agency, but it makes it much less likely as a junior. If he can stay off the injury list, he has the talent to move on to the NFL next year. He is an excellent pass rusher and he sets the edge well on running plays. Setting the weak side edge was a problem for the younger guys up until the Iowa game.
There will be a few transfers between now and summer. UF is sitting at 15 in the 17 recruiting class, but look for 24 or 25 on NSD.

Caleb Brantley's letter to the Gator Nation. It's well worth the read: www.seccountry.com/florida/florida-gators-caleb-brantley-nfl-draft-2017All of the leaving juniors wrote letters, but this was by far the best. I just read that up to 4 Gators could go in the first round of the NFL draft. I'm more inclined to think 3, Brantley, Tabor, and Wilson. UF is DBU once again. It's reload time at CB.

If both programs agree, the Michigan game in Jerry's World could be played on Sunday. This from SEC Country:
It’s one of the biggest games for the opening weekend of the 2017 season, but the game might be played on a different date.
The 2017 opener for Florida is set for Sept. 2 against Michigan. The game will be played in AT&T Stadium in Dallas, but the date could be changing.
According to a report from ESPN‘s Adam Rittenberg, there have been preliminary discussions about moving the game to Sept. 3 which is a Sunday. Both schools must agree to move the game back a day.
The Dallas Cowboys who play in AT&T Stadium does not start their season until Sept. 7 at the earliest. The Notre Dame-Texas game which was played on the Sunday before Labor Day in 2016 was one of the most watched games of the season.
As of right now, no game is scheduled for Sept. 3. Georgia Tech and Tennessee play in Atlanta on Sept. 4, Labor Day.

Treon Harris has a new home - still spurning everybody's advice to switch to WR or CB.
The former Florida quarterback will transfer to Tennessee State and continue his career as a quarterback, according to 247Sports’ Ryan Bartow. He is expected to enroll next week.
Harris transferred from the Gators program on July 25 less than a week after coach Jim McElwain announced that he would make the switch to wide receiver.
“Everybody has freedom, he doesn’t have to stay there,” McElwain said in July when asked how Harris handled switching positions. “But at the end of the day, look, we’re in this not here to hurt anybody’s feelings. But at the same time, it is what it is and we’ve got four guys who I’m really proud of. The room is really good and I’m excited about it.”
Harris played 12 games at quarterback during his sophomore season in 2015. He threw for 1,676 yards and nine touchdowns, but completed just 119-of-235 pass attempts.
He will have two years of eligibility remaining.

Add junior safety Marcel Harris to the returning list for the defense. Having Duke Dawson, Nickel/S/CB, and Harris back is great news for the defensive backfield.

Safety Nick Washington is returning for his senior season too. He was a part-time starter this season due to the injuries. We're looking good at safety and one of the CB slots.
