Off Week Blues Over - Game On!:
By Pat Dooley Columnist
Published: Friday, September 20, 2013 at 6:01 a.m.
Last Modified: Saturday, September 21, 2013 at 1:34 a.m.
The oddity of a bye week two games into the season has had its effect on Florida fans. They have had to relive that loss to Miami for longer than normal and taken two weeks not to look ahead, but to look in the rear-view mirror.
They see the SEC has turned into the Big 12 with its teams averaging 35.5 points a game, the highest average since the league expanded in 1992.
And they want to know, “Where’s ours?”
They want to know if their defense will show up from the start of the game instead of the second quarter. They want to know if Jeff Driskel is color blind. They want to know if the offensive line was overrated.
They want a lot.
That’s the nature of the beast. I was talking to Will Muschamp the other day about the restless fan base and he said, “That’s why you want to coach at Florida.”
You want the passion and the fervor even if it can become toxic. You want the expectations even if they can be unreal. You want the noise even if it creeps into the system.
Today, Florida will play Tennessee in The Swamp. That’s the only team the Gators can beat today. They can’t beat Miami. They can’t beat Georgia. All that matters today is how they play against the Vols.
So let it go. Spit out that gristle you’ve been chewing on for two weeks because it won’t get any easier to swallow.
The season starts now. Nobody is saying that a five-turnover loss to an in-state rival is ever going to be easy to digest. But today, it doesn’t matter.
All that matters is getting off to a 1-0 start in the SEC. I’m not saying it’s a do-over, that the loss to Miami didn’t happen.
But everything is still ahead of this Florida team. And today, the only thing standing in front of them will be the Volunteers.

Trey Burton Defends Wildcat Formation:
By Zach Abolverdi Correspondent
Published: Friday, September 20, 2013 at 6:01 a.m.
Last Modified: Saturday, September 21, 2013 at 1:25 a.m.
Florida's Wildcat formation with senior Trey Burton has come under scrutiny as of late.
Burton's three carries out of the package this season — all in the red zone — have totaled minus three yards.
Most media members and fans are now calling for it to be scrapped from the playbook based on the latest results. Burton begs to differ.
“I really enjoy it,” he said. “I think it works really well, and we wouldn't do it if it didn't work well.”
The overall statistics back him up.
In 15 games under offensive coordinator Brent Pease, UF has rushed out of the formation 46 times for 318 yards (6.9 avg.) and four touchdowns. Burton has accounted for 192 of those yards and a pair of scores on 32 carries, while Florida's receivers and running backs gained 126 yards on 14 touches in 2012.
Last year's 80-yard touchdown scamper by Burton at Tennessee and Omarius Hines' 36-yard score against Missouri pad the stats somewhat, but Burton said those runs are examples of why the package is productive.
“(Defenses) have to spend time game planning for it, which is kind of hard,” he said. “They have to know what they want to do. And when they don't do the right thing, big runs like that happen.”
Center Jonotthan Harrison feels the Wildcat gives the Gators versatility on offense and the element of surprise.
“It adds a component to the offense that can catch a defense off guard,” he said. “We're real fortunate to have the personnel to put a package like that in, and it does come in handy.”

Vols DE is a native of Gainesville, Fl and his father played football for UF in the 80s:
By Kevin Brockway Staff writer
Published: Friday, September 20, 2013 at 6:01 a.m.
Last Modified: Saturday, September 21, 2013 at 1:20 a.m.
For Tennessee junior defensive lineman Jordan Williams, today's game at The Swamp against Florida will take on special significance.
Williams will be returning to the site where he grew up watching games on Saturdays. A Gainesville native and former Gainesville High standout, Williams will have 15 tickets set aside for family and friends.
“It's definitely exciting because a lot of my family is going to be down there, a lot of friends from high school, friends from the city are going to be there,” Williams said. “I feel good about it.”
Williams has ties to the Florida program. His father, Keith, was a former defensive lineman for the Gators in the 1980s. A three-star prospect coming out of high school, the younger Williams was offered a scholarship by Florida.
“They came on late, (but) by that time I was already committed to Tennessee,” Williams said. “I was a Vol by then so I stuck with it.”
Dad was OK with the decision, too.
“He just wanted me to play where I was happy,” Williams said. “It didn't impact my decision. He wanted me to play where I wanted to play, because he said I was going to be there four years living it, and I am.”
After some early struggles, the 6-foot-5, 260-pound Williams is starting to emerge as a pass-rushing threat for the Vols. He posted two sacks last season and has 1.5 sacks in three games this year.
“I definitely feel like I've evolved,” Williams said. “The game has just kind of slowed down a lot for me. Before everything moved kind of fast, and now it's easier. I'm more conditioned to see the game, the formations and plays.”

Gillespie now wearing different shade of orange By Kevin Brockway Staff writer
Published: Friday, September 20, 2013 at 9:47 p.m.
Last Modified: Friday, September 20, 2013 at 9:47 p.m.
Former Florida running back Robert Gillespie is not looking at his return to The Swamp with any extra nostalgia.
Hired as Tennessee's running backs coach last offseason, Gillespie was a UF team captain in 2001 who still ranks second all-time in school history in receptions (96) and receiving yards (1,091) by a running back. But he hasn't had a chance to talk to any former teammates about his return to Florida Field when the Vols face Florida today.
“We're so consumed watching and trying to figure out the best way to attack that defense,” Gillespie said. “I haven't had a lot of time to get on Facebook or Twitter or even sit down with my wife. It's one of those weeks where you don't have a lot of time to do anything outside of trying to get your players prepared and come up with a game plan.”
Gillespie credits his former head coach, Gator icon Steve Spurrier, as being most instrumental in his development. It was Spurrier who gave Gillespie his first break in coaching, hiring him as a graduate assistant at South Carolina in 2005. Gillespie was promoted to running backs coach at South Carolina (2006-08) before stints at Oklahoma State (2009-10) and West Virginia (2010-11).
“I learned the most from Coach Spurrier, just how he competes and the way he kind of patterns the game and sees the whole field,” Gillespie said. “So I was able to learn a lot from him as a player and, all of a sudden, being on the other side of it, at (South) Carolina I was able to see how and the rhyme and reason of everything he did.”

This and that from Franz Beard on Gator Country - Clearly, Franz isn't using the spread in his weekly predictions (wink):
Written by Franz Beard, September 21, 2013
FIVE THINGS TO LOOK FOR AGAINST TENNESSEE: (1) Crossing patterns by the wide receivers will get big gains; (2) Jeff Driskel will throw at least one touchdown pass when he pump fakes and a Tennessee corner will think he’s jumping the route; (3) Better play by the safeties with Jaylen Watkins moving over from corner to his more natural position; (4) Ronald Powell won’t line up in the same place two times in a row; and (5) The right side of the offensive line (Jon Halapio and Tyler Moore) will have a huge day in a running game that gives Kelvin Taylor his first real chance to show what he can do.
WHY FLORIDA WILL WIN: Tennessee’s only chance to win this game is to have enough success running the ball that the Vols will be able to complete some passes on play action. The Gators will stack the box and trust that the athletes in the UF secondary won’t let UT’s inferior skill people to get off the line cleanly. The game is over the moment the Gators turn the Vols one-dimensional. Florida’s secondary is that good. Because of its lack of defensive talent, the Vols will blitz a lot and take a lot of chances jumping routes and going for the pick. As long as Jeff Driskel is patient and uses play action and an occasional pump fake, Florida will move the ball through the air. Florida’s running game will come up big on delays and sprint draw plays. I like the Gators to win it 38-14.
LEGEND HAS IT … : The Gators traveled to Knoxville with an unbeaten record (8-0) in December of 1928, hoping to land a berth in the Rose Bowl. There had been a drought in East Tennessee for months so imagine the Florida team’s surprise when they arrived at the stadium on Saturday to discover the field was a quagmire. According to the legend, Colonel (he wasn’t a general yet) Bob Neyland explained that it had rained and rained very hard the night before. Only it didn’t rain anywhere else. The Vols had longer cleats but there weren’t enough to give the Gators any and oddly all the sporting goods stores in Knoxville were closed. Imagine that. The faster Gators slipped and slid all over the field and Tennessee took a 13-12 win when future Georgia Tech coach Bobby Dodd blocked Florida’s game-tying extra point attempt.
BIG VISIT WEEKEND FOR BASKETBALL: Justise Winslow (6-6, 210, Houston, TX St. John’s) is doing his official visit to Florida this weekend and he’ll be joined by 2014 commitments Chris Chiozza (5-10, 160, Memphis, TN White Station) and Brandone Francis (6-5, 210, Jacksonville, FL Arlington Country Day) plus 2013 McDonald’s All-American Chris Walker, who has completed coursework and is waiting word that he will be eligible to enroll at UF in December. Winslow can defend four positions and doesn’t have to have the ball in his hands a lot to get his points because he is so good in transition, on the offensive glass and at getting points off his defense. Although it was thought Winslow was a longshot to Florida, a lot of people close to him indicate that Florida might be far closer than anyone expects. Just to be sure he gives Winslow his best shot, Billy Donovan is bringing in former Gators Joakim Noah, Al Horford, Corey Brewer, Taurean Green and others.
THOSE ZANY ACC REFEREES: If you were at The Swindle in the Swamp in 2003 then you can sympathize with North Carolina State Thursday night. The Wolfpack lost to Clemson, 26-14, with no help from the zebra crew which incorrectly called Bryan Underwood out of bounds on what would have been an 83-yard touchdown run that would have given NC State a 14-13 lead. Two officials had a view of the play. Line judge Richard Misner called him out of bounds at the Clemson 47-yard line. Field judge Mike Cullin had a clear view and he didn’t overrule Misner. Replay officials in the booth didn’t overrule the call on the field either even though there was no replay that showed Underwood’s foot hit the chalk on the sideline. It was early in the game, so I’m not sure North Carolina State would have sprung the upset, but that was a play that could have changed the game and the zebras got it wrong. They’re from the ACC. It’s to be expected.
T.J. YELDON SUSPENDED FOR A QUARTER: That throat slash by Alabama tailback T.J. Yeldon last week against Texas A&M is going to cost him. The gesture cost Alabama a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty in a game that Bama squeaked by, 49-42. It’s going to cost him playing in the first quarter Saturday against Colorado State, too. “That’s not us; that’s not our program,” Alabama Coach Nick Saban said. Even though it’s just Colorado State and a game that Alabama should win by at least 40 points, it’s a fine gesture by Saban. More coaches should be willing to take a stand like that.
THE FEARLESS FORECAST: In addition to taking Florida over Tennessee, I like LSU over Aubrin, The Fighting Mullens of Mississippi State over Helen of Troy, Missouri over Indiana, Alabama over Colorado State, Texas A&M over SMU, the Georgia Poodles over North Texas, Bill and Hilary Clinton State U. over Rutgers and Gloria Vanderbilt over UMass. Last week: 8-0. Season: 33-2.

Look on the bright side youngster. Next season, UT gets to lose to the xxxxing Gators the first weekend in October. This from VolNation:
1. You know what? I am ****ing tired of Florida. I'm tired of watching my Tennessee Volunteers (yes, they are "my" Volunteers, just like they are yours) get beat by Florida. The last time Florida lost, I WAS IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. I'm a sophomore in college now. And whether it's by beat down or close games, whatever, Tennessee has not been able to handle Florida. It's like a curse. Any time the UT fanbase has gotten their hopes up, Florida is there in early September to ruin it.
But this changes this year. Butch Jones knows what to do. The players are hungry. They have looked forward to this game since Spring. This is the one they want. It's time to take Florida down. I have no logical reason why (as I usually consider myself a "realist" Vol fan) but I woke up this morning KNOWING Tennessee is going to strike down the Gators and kick their asses tomorrow. All I know is that we are going to be hugging our relatives and friends as we finally tell Florida they can go **** off and we celebrate the biggest victory for Tennessee since 2007.
Tomorrow, the start of the Vols ascension back to dominance starts tomorrow in Gainesville. Tennessee will win tomorrow. Mark it down. You can put it front page, back page, center page, Tennessee will not lose to Florida tomorrow. Florida isn't taking the Vols serious. And that's perfectly fine. I understand why they haven't. But it ends tomorrow. Butch Jones has this team ready. They are focused. They will be victorious. And we can go eat some ****ing gator Saturday as the streak and its utter despair will come to a glorious end tomorrow on September 21st! **** Florida.
GO VOLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jeff Driskel injured right ankle while giving UT 7. The relentless UT defense put pressure making Driskel throw the ball late into coverage. Isn't that what I'm supposed to say Darrell?
UT 7-0

Driskel is back on the sideline, but he's out and on crutches. It could be a high ankle sprain which would put him out for 6 weeks.

Soloman Patton takes a short pass 50+ yards for a TD.
UF 10-7
Tyler Murphy is doing OK - not sure he can do worse than Driskel.
