Offense F
First half: Tyler Murphy completed only four passes and the Gators managed only 94 yards. Of those yards, 60 came on their first possession of the game.
Second half: Florida’s offense put together two nice drives, but they ended with only three points being scored.
For the game: You hold LSU to 17 points, you should be able to win the game. But Florida’s offensive ineptitude reached a new low Saturday.
Defense C
First half: Although Florida got the only turnover of the first half, the defense struggled to stop the Tigers. They allowed 200 yards and 14 first downs to LSU.
Second half: Florida’s defense played much better, but when the Gators absolutely needed a stop they allowed the final field goal drive to LSU.
For the game: The defense wasn’t as dominant as it has been, but it still played well enough to win despite the early problems.
Special teams B
First half: The Frankie Velez experiment worked in the first quarter with a field goal. Marcus Roberson returned to run back punts but went nowhere.
Second half: Solomon Patton had a nice kickoff return and Velez made another field goal. Fake punt was well-executed.
For the game: Special teams were strong again, and Florida may have found its field-goal kicker for the rest of the season.
Overall D
The Gators had their chances and made it interesting in the fourth quarter, but again this is not a team that plays well from behind. It wasn’t a bad loss but a disappointing one.

BATON ROUGE, La. -- No one will ever accuse the Florida defense of setting its standards too low.
“We didn’t hold them enough to win the game,” Gators inside linebacker Mike Taylor said Saturday night after 10th-ranked LSU’s 17-6 win at Tigers Stadium. “That’s the bottom line.”
That’s certainly one of looking at it.
The Gator way.
The Tigers and their red-hot hot-shot quarterback Zach Mettenberger started the day averaging 45.5 points and 488.8 yards per game. Against the Gators, they finished with season-lows of 17 points and 327 yards.
In the eyes of Coach Will Muschamp and his defense, too many.
There’s no question, the Tigers dominated both lines of scrimmage. The fact they were able to do to the UF front what no team had done in some time was a bit of surprise, given the Gators were allowing just 65 yards rushing per game. The Tigers gashed the Gators for 175 yards on 39 carries, with tailback Jeremy Hill good for 121 on 19 attempts, making him the first opposing back in 11 games -- since Georgia’s Todd Gurley’s 121 last October -- to eclipse 100 against the UF defense.
“We can win shootouts and we can win tough, physical games,” Hill said. “That’s what kind of game it was today. It was a tough game. Each team’s running game had to be successful for them to win the game and I think ours was a little more successful. It was a hard-nosed game.”
The kind the Gators (and their coach) really, really like ... which surely made the result even more grating on the flight back to Gainesville.
“Yeah, they kind of beat us at our own game,” defensive tackle Damien Jacobs said.
LSU ranked ninth in the SEC in rushing (197.3 yards per game), but they weren’t supposed to be able to push the Gators around like they did Saturday.
The problem wasn’t missed assignments as much as Florida’s front seven getting locked up and turned.
“They got movement up front and our guys didn’t get off blocks,” Muschamp said. “There are going to be situations when you play a team like this -- like last week [against Arkansas] and later on in the year -- where you have to get off blocks and back off some tackles. Our guys knew that coming in. We didn’t do it enough.”
The most egregious sequence came in the fourth quarter after the Gators squandered an excellent scoring chance, with a first down at the LSU 7, by running three plays and losing three yards. They settled for a short field goal that made the score 14-6.
A one-possession game. The Florida defense needed a stop. Needed to bow up.
On first down, Hill went for 11 yards. Three plays later, he went for seven more. Then he broke free for 26 to the UF 19, setting up a field goal that countered the Florida 3-pointer -- and with just 7:58 remaining.
“Being physical up front, that’s something we pride ourselves on,” Taylor said. “So it’s painful that we lost the way we lost.”

BATON ROUGE, La. -- The thought had crossed his mind.
Gators redshirt junior kicker Frankie Velez, who walked onto the team in the summer of 2010, considered the possibility that he might finish his career without ever attempting a kick for the Gators.
Caleb Sturgis held down the job most of Velez's first three years in the program, and he was buried on the depth chart behind Austin Hardin and Brad Phillips through the first five games this season.
Normally, Velez gathers with his family and girlfriend in Ocala to watch the Gators play when they go on the road.
But not Saturday at LSU.
Velez made the trip and accounted for all of Florida's points with a pair of field goals. His 44-yard kick in the first quarter gave the Gators an early lead and stands as the Gators' longest field goal of the season. He added a 27-yard field goal in the fourth quarter of the Gators' 17-6 loss.
"I’ve been waiting four years,'' Velez said. "I was starting to doubt myself. I just kept thinking positively and finally got my chance."
Prior to Saturday, Velez said the last time he made a field goal was in the spring game two years ago. The last one that counted for real came his final season at Ocala Trinity Catholic in 2009.
Velez's form and his execution looked good on both kicks Saturday.
"I was more nervous for the second one, but the first one felt so good,'' Velez said.
Gators coach Will Muschamp said he decided to go with Velez after watching him at practice last week.
"Frankie Velez would be our kicker right now,'' Muschamp said. "I have a lot of confidence in Frankie."
SEC EAST WIDE OPEN
Muschamp
The Gators were disappointed in their performance Saturday, losing at LSU for the second straight time and failing to seize an opportunity to take sole possession of first place in the SEC East after Missouri upset Georgia.
The Gators (4-2, 3-1) travel to SEC East leader Missouri (6-0, 2-0) Saturday for what now shapes up as one of the season's most important games.
Florida can still earn a trip to Atlanta by winning the rest of its conference games.
"All the chips are on the table for us,'' Muschamp said.
"This is an SEC team, a rivalry team we damn sure wanted to beat,'' linebacker Michael Taylor said following Saturday's loss. "But they're not in the East, luckily, and we have all our East opponents in front of us. I know we’re capable of beating all of them. That’s what we have to do."
The Gators have not won the East since 2009.
JONES UPDATE
Sophomore running back Matt Jones' day was cut short Saturday due to a left leg injury. After rushing four times for 17 yards in the first quarter, Jones left and did not return.
He watched the second half in his warm-up suit from the sidelines.
"We do not think it's serious,'' Muschamp said.
Muschamp reiterated that thought on his Sunday morning TV show and said he will know more later this week following additional treatment.
DEFENSIVE STANCE
LSU made 5 of 9 third-down conversions on Saturday against a Florida defense that is limiting opponents to 27.1 percent on third down, good for eighth in the country.
One that particularly stung was a third-and-17 in the second quarter. LSU quarterback Zach Mettenberger hit Odell Beckham Jr. for a 22-yard gain to UF's 25. Three plays later, the Tigers took a 14-3 lead on Anthony Jennings' 1-yard touchdown run.
"That was very frustrating. Third down is our money down. We take pride in getting off the field in those situations."
QUOTE OF NOTE I
“They were kind of forcing us to go there because they were pressuring and then when they didn’t pressure, they tried to keep everything in front of them. We tried to nickel and dime them.” -- Murphy on Florida's high ratio of short passes
QUOTE OF NOTE III
"We moved the ball but we gave up too many negative plays that set us back in down-and-distance. We have a hard time converting in some of those situations. We didn't create enough explosives down the field. There is no question that it's a huge concern as we move forward." -- Muschamp on offense not producing on early downs Saturday
QUOTE OF NOTE III
"That was a nice scrum. Really, it was the day of the big men. It was a close-quarters scrum at the end, running the ball for first downs. That's what we were supposed to do." -- Miles on Saturday's physical contest
NOTES AND NUGGETS
The Gators' streak of limiting SEC opponents to 20 or less points is now at 13 games ... Defensive tackle Damien Jacobs left the game in the first half when he lost his helmet and was hit on the head by an LSU player. Jacobs returned and said afterward the injury was "nothing major." ... Mettenberger fumbled in the first half was recovered by defensive tackle Leon Orr, marking the 17th consecutive game UF has forced a turnover ... The Gators have not committed a turnover in back-to-back games ... Florida gave up five first downs to the Tigers because of penalties ... Sophomore linebacker Antonio Morrison led the Gators with 12 tackles ... Punter Kyle Christy had a 14-yard pass to Neiron Ball on a fake punt in the fourth quarter to keep a Florida drive alive ... The first punt of Murphy's career -- a 36-yard pooch punt in the second quarter -- pinned LSU at its 1-yard line.

So what? UF has 1 SEC loss. Twelve other teams have 1 SEC loss or more. The only two that don't are bama and Mizzou. UF will put an SEC loss on Mizzou this week. LSU is in the rear view mirror.
I will say everybody is focused on UF being outplayed on the OL and DL. That did not have to be the case with the DL..........

#22 Florida at #14 Missouri:
THE STORYLINE • Florida and Missouri are meeting for just the third time ever. Last year, the Gators beat the Tigers 14-7 in Gainesville in the two teams’ first meeting as Southeastern Conference opponents. The first meeting between the two schools came in the 1966 Sugar Bowl, when No. 6 Missouri beat Florida 20-18. • Both UF and Mizzou control their own destinies in the SEC East race for a berth in the SEC Championship Game in Atlanta. The Tigers beat Georgia last weekend to improve to 2-0 in the conference, while the Gators are 3-1, with their only loss coming to SEC West opponent LSU.

Columbia, Missouri weather for the game:
Saturday Partly sunny, with a high near 62. Saturday Night A 40 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 40.
I'm glad we're kicking off at 11:21 AM CST. The temp should be about 60 for the game. It would be uncomfortably chilly and maybe wet if a night game. UF got lucky getting the SEC Network slot this week.

Injuries for the Missouri game:
Matt Jones injured his knee at LSU. Nobody knows his status, but it doesn't look good for playing against Mizzou and maybe beyond.
Mizzou starting QB James Franklin separated his shoulder in the 4th quarter of the tigers win over the poodles. He has been lost for the season.
