Van DeCree - AA 1973-74 Ben Hartsock - AC 2003 As we get down into the more popular numbers, there are more notables than can be pictured...those listed in bold font are notable for something I found/remember. I'm not 100% sure, but I think Mike Gurr, for instance, was originally a walk on, and at some point was pressed into starting. So anyways, these are my memories, if you have questions about someone, it will be good for you to "look 'em UP" and learn more Buckeye trivia... vsn decree is truly one of the all-time greats at osu. a dominant de in the early 70s. i was always surprised he didn't have a successful pro career. but he's had drug issues and served time for that as well as probation violations in the last few years. a shame. david whitfield was a starting lb on the national title team in '68, but his son is more well known to today's intense football fans. george whitfield has become a qb tutor/guru in the last decade or so, working with guys like ben roethlisberger, cam newton, andrew luck, and tons of cfb qb's, including manziel and braxton. george played for tressel up at ysu in the late 90s. stan white made one of the biggest plays in osu history in the '70 revenge game vs um, picking off a pass that set up the td that clinched that 20-9 win. thad jamison caught a late bomb from mike tomczak in the fiesta bowl to beat pitt. brian stablein was part of the team that finally got osu turned back around after a 4-6-1 season in cooper's first year in '88. guys like hartsock and fragel were obviously fantastic buckeyes who continued on to play on sundays. 88... pretty good number. After the slow run thru the 90s, I thought it was a good number as well...

“If you never saw him run with a football, we can’t describe it to you. It wasn’t like Red Grange or Tom Harmon or anybody else. It was kind of a cross between music and cannon fire, and it brought your heart up under your ears.” — Bob Hooey describing Chic Harley

It was kind of a cross between music and cannon fire, and it brought your heart up under your ears.” — Bob Hooey describing Chic Harley Follow that up with this one... The following is a stanza from James Thurber's poem "When Chic Harley Got Away." The years of football playing reach back a long, long way, And the heroes are a hundred who have worn the red and gray; You can name the brilliant players from the year the game began, You can rave how this one punted and praise how that one ran; You can say that someone's plunging was the best you ever saw - You can claim the boys now playing stage a game without a flaw - But admit there was no splendor in all the bright array Like the glory of the going when Chic Harley got away . .

If you hit google pics, you'll remember then if you don't already. couple names stick out to me, mostly for what they did after osu. lashutka obviously, who went back to law school and became first columbus city attorney and then a two term mayor in the 90s. tom perdue just died last fall. co-captain on the undefeated '61 team and also both an all-american in baseball (he batted .469 one year... still the season record for the program) and an academic all-american to boot. later became a religious author. my dad played against him in hs (perdue grew up in huntington, wv). bartoszek started out as a wr but then moved to te his senior year and actually had a pretty good season; 15 catches, 2nd on the team behind brian baschnagel's 19, for 240 yards and a couple td's. 15 catches were 25%+ of the completions corny greene had in '74 (58... wow. in 12 games... less than 5 on average/game.) kevin houser had a pretty lengthy pro career as a long snapper but the last thing i remember about him is some kind of investment scam allegation against him from drew brees and other players in new orleans. don't remember how that turned out.
