Ohio State football players from 'Tattoogate' scandal seek to have records reinstated
Five former Ohio State football players who were involved in a scandal in 2010 over the sale of their memorabilia for cash and tattoos are asking for their records to be reinstated by the NCAA.
The group, which includes Mike Adams, Daniel “Boom” Herron, DeVier Posey, Terrelle Pryor and Solomon Thomas, released a statement on Tuesday, less than two weeks from the date college athletes first became permitted by the association to receive compensation for the use of their names, images and likenesses.
Last year, several of the players told The Dispatch that they supported allowing college athletes to be paid for endorsements and saw themselves at Ohio State as exploited athletes off whom others profited.
Pryor, the team’s former star quarterback, initially posted the statement on his Twitter account before it was retweeted by others.
“Now that fundamental right has been granted to a new generation of athletes,” the statement read. “Now that they finally have the freedom to share in some of the millions of dollars in revenue they generate for their coaches, their institutions, their conferences, and the NCAA as a whole, we would like to see our hard won accomplishments reinstated.
“Although this could never undo what we and our families endured for breaking rules that shouldn't have existed in the first place, we believe reinstating and acknowledging the accomplishments of ourselves and our teammates would be a huge step in the right direction.”
Following the scandal known as “Tattoogate,” Ohio State vacated wins from a 12-1 season in 2010 that included Big Ten and Sugar Bowl championships.
In his tweet, Pryor noted the NCAA had allowed the players to play in the Sugar Bowl. It only suspended them for five games in the following 2011 season. The NCAA did not respond to a request for comment.
The scrubbing of records from the season reduced the career statistics of the players and the official win total for former coach Jim Tressel, who resigned amid the fallout.
In exchange for tattoos at a parlor on the West Side of Columbus, the players gave items such as jerseys, championship rings and the traditional gold pants charms given in recognition of wins over archrival Michigan.
Under Ohio State’s current name, image and likeness guidelines, such action remains prohibited. The school says players may not sell their team-issued equipment or apparel until their college eligibility has expired. It specifies shoes, jerseys and helmets as some of the types of gear that cannot be sold.
But as limits on compensation for college athletes have drawn increased scrutiny in recent years, former players have pushed back against past penalties for rules violations, seeking for them to be revisited.
In a statement released on the first day that players were allowed to profit off their NIL earlier this month, USC running Reggie Bush made a similar request for his records to be reinstated and for the Heisman Trophy to be returned.
The NCAA penalized Bush in 2010 after it found that he and his family had accepted hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash from a pair of sports marketers.
The statement from the Buckeyes’ players concluded with an expression of hope for their full legacies to be reflected.
"We are calling for our school records and legacy to be restored so that Buckeye Nation can look at us with the same love and fondness that we've always had for them,” it read. “We look forward to one day telling our story and the Tattoo 5 forever being a legitimate part of Ohio State's glorious history.”
