Simpson University's football team prepares for Frontier Conference debut REDDING, Calif. — Simpson University's football team the Red Hawks prepares for Frontier Conference debut on August 5, 2024. (KRCR) Footballs were in the air at Simpson University in Redding on Monday, the only four-year college program north of Sacramento. This is the second year for the fledgling Red Hawks and the team has more than doubled in size, with more than 125 players on the roster. Simpson University's football team the Red Hawks prepares for Frontier Conference debut on August 5, 2024. (KRCR) The roster is large and head coach Shawn Daniel says if you want playing time, you've got to earn it. KRCR's Mike Mangas asked Daniel, with so many players, how do you keep all of them happy? "It's competition, it's not about keeping guys happy. It's about the standard," said Daniel. "Standard over feelings. I'm not here to keep you happy, my job is to keep the best 11 of offense, the best 11 of defense, and put the best product on the football field. It's not about keeping guys happy, it's about product on the field." Shawn Daniel, SU Football Head Coach (KRCR) "It's a great feeling knowing that we have more people on the team, more people to support each other... It's a great feeling," said Brayden Bishop, Simpson Red Hawk. Brayden Bishop SU Red Hawks player (KRCR) The Red Hawks are joining the Frontier Conference as an associate member this season, they'll play most of the schools in the NAIA conference this year but will be full-fledged members next season. Simpson opens on the road at the College of Idaho on August 31. Their first home game is on September 7 hosting Pacific Lutheran at Foot Hill High in Palo Cedro. krcrtv.com/news/local/simpson-universitys-football-team-prepares-for-frontier-conference-debut#

This will be great having live four year university football here. The only 4yr. college football program in the northern 1/3 of the state of California. Most of the schools in the frontier conference are smaller schools in the footprint of the Big Sky Conference which Sacramento State and UC Davis are in. Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Utah, Montana, North and South Dakota. The Frontier I believe also includes a school in Arizona and two in Nebraska. 14 teams in two divisions starting next year. Simpson University is in the Frontier Conference as a football only member. There is a California and Arizona NAIA conference all our other sports are in. We are the only NAIA school in California that offers football as a competitive sport.

I started doing some research, and BREC Memorial Stadium, a high school stadium in Baton Rouge has a capacity greater than 21,000. There are several around the country who can hold 15k or so, but not many that hold more than 21,000.

fwiw, stark county in ne ohio has 2 home stadiums for high schools (canton mckinley, massillon washington) which both held above 21k when I was in hs. massillon's got re-modeled in the 80s and is now a max of around 18k.

Stadiums that big are rare. 2 in one county? Amazing. I always thought that Texas had the biggest HS stadiums, but when I started digging, I learned that's not true, even though Texas is a football-crazy state.

No doubt TX has a lot of big HS stadiums, but I just assumed that theirs were the BIGGEST.
I don't know the detailed football history of Canton, but I do know it's a very important place in football history. The Canton Bulldogs were I think the very first pro football team.
Back in the old days, all or most of the pro football teams were in the north/midwest, so it only stands to reason that a lot of players from that area went on to the pros. The only "southern" team was the Louisville (KY) Breckenridges, and they played only 4 games, in 1922.

I live in a sparsely populated part of California where my county and all six that border us which make up about 1/6 of Ca.’s geographic size and less than 1/100 of it population, likely less than the city of Baton Rouge. Our JC stadium is likely not much bigger than our 3 biggest high school ones. I’d be surprised if anything we have could seat 7,000 other than our rodeo grounds bleachers which can accommodate that or a bit more.

I have to admit we have few ice hockey teams down here, although we had the Baton Rouge Kingfish from 1996 till 2003. The Centroplex had sports seating of about 8,000. I never went.
The city itself is only about 225,000 population.

We have no ice skating rink. I thought Baton Rouge was bigger than that particularly post Katrina. The 7 counties here are 350k total between them combined, covering close to 30,000 square miles.

The Baton Rouge metro area has a much larger population, since a large number live outside of the city limits. The entire area which comprises several parishes, has a population of about 776,000 people.
The area has everything we need to live, but it still has that small town atmosphere (except for the inner city, which is a criminal's paradise). Inner city is a totally Demonrat controlled hellhole. There are a lot of areas I will not go in to, even WITH a gun.
