We have no ice skating rink. I thought Baton Rouge was bigger than that particularly post Katrina. The 7 counties here are 350k total between them combined, covering close to 30,000 square miles. The Baton Rouge metro area has a much larger population, since a large number live outside of the city limits. The entire area which comprises several parishes, has a population of about 776,000 people.
The area has everything we need to live, but it still has that small town atmosphere (except for the inner city, which is a criminal's paradise). Inner city is a totally Demonrat controlled hellhole. There are a lot of areas I will not go in to, even WITH a gun.
For us those kind of areas are 160 and 200 miles away. There is no place anywhere near where I live that I fear to go or consider a no go zone. That small town atmosphere exists here even in the one relative city in the 7 county region. Like you, we have everything we need to live independently of the rest of the state. You are lucky to have your major state university in your backyard. We have no such thing. Our nearest UC campus is 150 miles away and the nearest CSU campus is 70 miles away. The state won’t put either type of university in this 1/6th of the state. Then Simpson University moved from San Francisco to Redding in the late 1980’s. It has helped. Over the years we and they have grown and we have adopted this private Christian University as our university. They have added a criminal justice department and are building a new science and technology department. They are adding departments to meet our city and regions needs. They doubled the size of their 4 year nursing program and added a post grad Nurse Practitioner program to their ones in business, education, counseling, psychology, and ministry. Now they have added a college football program as well and I intend to attend their first home game next Saturday night. Our local JC has helped with a needed four year degree and more two year degrees than most JC’s in the state. They also offer a program where one can take any CSU course work on line locally while being enrolled there for health, library, tutoring, counseling, and class room space here. We have among the highest high school graduates rates and one of the highest “some college” rates in the state. We no longer lose our young to an away 4 year school never to return home for lack of opportunity. Those days are gone.

What I CAN'T understand is that even though Tiger Stadium is the 5th largest stadium in CFB, they have NO bowl game there.

It is a nice place. They’ve done very well here. They experienced the growing pains of playing a first ever football game yesterday at the #4 ranked team in NAIA in Idaho. Lost 65-0.
As to bowl games and big college home stadiums, having any major team hosting a bowl game is rare. The B1G has some huge stadiums and only one member plays where a bowl game is played and that’s UCLA and the Rose Bowl which they moved into long after the Rose Bowl was established.
