I love German food. I'd bet there aren't more than a 2 or 3 German restaurants in all of LA. We have an excellent on in Sanford. Truly authentic, run by German immigrants. Food is fantastic and the beer is delightful. |

I always wonder why German food isn't more popular in the US. I love German food. I'd bet there aren't more than a 2 or 3 German restaurants in all of LA. We have an excellent on in Sanford. Truly authentic, run by German immigrants. Food is fantastic and the beer is delightful. I designed one about 25 years ago for a guy who had a restaurant in Munich and wanted an NY and Los Angeles presence. He literally had the entire bars and dining room decor built in Munich and shipped to NY and LA, so I didn't have that much to do other than back of the house and to shepherd the job through the permit and construction process. He had all German staff and a maybe a dozen German beers on tap. Really great place, great atmosphere, great food and beer...and went belly up in about 3 years. About a year later, Wolfgang Punk opened a German themed restaurant in Santa Monica where all the dishes were designed around specific beers. Great menu, I thought. I thought it was the greatest idea he had ever come up with in LA. ...Gone in a year. |

They opened a German deli around the corner in 2011 and a German clothing & knick knacks shop a few years later. The German food is great. They have the main restaurant downstairs, a smaller small plate restaurant on the second floor and an open air beer garden on the roof. They have Bitburger, Köstritzer, Steigel, Erdinger, Warsteiner and many more on tap. Just a great place. |
