I've been thinking about this a lot lately, what with the country going to shit and break-ins/home invasions on the rise... Having my lightest 16" AR house rifle with Aimpoint T-2 red dot at the ready is not conducive for CQC so I've decided to buy an AR pistol which will be far more maneuverable and just as deadly. I'm looking at this one, which I'll put another Aimpoint red dot on: palmettostatearmory.com/psa-custom-7-5-5-56-nato-1-7-phosphate-7-ltwt-mlok-moe-sba3-pistol-bedrock.htmlPSA certainly has others in the $500-600 range but this one really caught my eye, and the 7" barrel is a big plus to me. Probably put a WML on it too like all my AR's have.

I don't know how humongous your house is or what it is made of, but as one who has investigated more than a few room-distance shootings in real life, and studied many more on video and in written reports, I don't see the need for anything more than a semiauto in .45ACP or a modern 6 shot revolver in .45 Colt, both launching HP bullets. A long gun is not easy to smoothly and quietly navigate through a house with. If you insist on a carbine, a 9MM PCC could do the job but its longer than pistol length barrel and buttstock still leaves it clumsy.
The advantage of the revolver is that if you want a 5" barrel, you get a 5" barrel with 6 individual rotating chambers feeding it. In a 5" barelled semi-auto you get a 5" long tube, with only 4" or so of rifling. The breech end of the "barrel" is simply the single chamber which sacrifices an inch or so of rifling just to house an unfired round.
I guess if I wanted to drop down one, I'd get the Glock G-17L loaded with 9mm+P.
Go through all "The Armed Citizen" articles in "The American Rifleman" magazines and you will see the numerous types of firearms used in successful home defense situations. A lot of them turn out to be grandpa's old shotgun or his .30-30 deer rifle.
You don't need nuttin' fancy, but it's your choice.
Myself, I keep a Glock .45ACP (14 rounds) and a Taurus G3 9MM (18 rounds) handy. If I need more than that, it's time to climb into the attic and break out my stash of LAW rockets.
