That fine was for giving the officials an excuse to reverse that PI call. The University of Georgia General Fund will use that money wisely.

Browns fans wished referees would have reverse the call in 2001 vs Jacksonville AKA Bottlegate....a low point for NFL Referees

The SEC also welcomed Texas to their first SEC fine of $250k for throwing water bottles and trash on the field for a targeting call. That was a BS move by their fans. And then the refs rewarded them by overturning the original call. Bizarre sequence. The call was flat wrong, and the students were probably mostly drunk. It's college football after all. That reminds me of a college football game at USC my freshman year. There was a similar bad call, and some clown threw an empty bottle of something onto the field. The PA announcer came on and said something like, "Please do not throw anything on the field." or some such normal announcement. So the student section somehow decided that everyone should instead register their anger at the call by passing their empties politely down to the field level to be stacked in a row on the bottom wall that separating the stands from the field. Hundreds upon hundreds of empties got stacked up like soldiers on that wall as the game continued. It became a bit of a tradition for the student section for a while to register complaints about bad calls and also a sort of thumb in the eye of the admin's 'no alcohol' policy at games. Eventually they started checking for bottles at the gate, so that ended that.

No. They called PI on the Texas DB, marked off the penalty, set the ball and signaled ready to play, then the Texas fans started throwing bottles and cans. So the officials huddled and decided there was no PI. Guess they were scared.

A Florida fan posted, "Texas got fined for throwing garbage on the field against Georgia." He then said, "Florida has been throwing garbage on the field against Georgia for the last three years and never got fined."

Kirby said in his after game press conference that it sets the stage for fans to do this any time they don't like a call. The officials should have called a Delay of Game penalty on Texas but didn't. I think they were scared of what might happen to them after the game. The Referee also lives in Texas and has a business there and depends on the public for customers. No official at any game should officiate in the same state they live in, or have gone to either school in the game. There used to be a referee that was a Georgia Tech alumnus and owned a car dealership in Atlanta that officiated SEC games and the Georgia-Georgia Tech games. Georgia always got penalties at the most opportune times for their opponent when he called a game.

Had mixed emotions. On one hand, had game not been delayed, the call stands, as it wasn’t reviewable. And that’s the way it goes sometimes. On the other, you want the right call. What bothered me most is reversing the call the way they did rewarded the fans actions. In the end, it didn’t matter in the outcome, so it’s a dead issue.

But, is what it is at this point.
