No offense, but police work isn't close to the most dangerous job in America.
It isn't lack of bravery that stops people from becoming cops, it is the nature of the work. As a layman observer, to me it isn't physical bravery, it's mental bravery that cops need.

Joseph Wambaugh wrote about police work 50 years ago and reading that first book of his (The New Centurians) cured me of any desire to be a cop. It just seems like endless contact with the worst humans on Earth and worse, some of the results of those people. That seems like it takes some serious mental toughness to put aside every night.

If you want jobs requiring real physical bravery, try walking joists 30 feet in the air, or working in a mine, or slopping boiling hot tar at the edge of a roof 3 floors up ...in the summer, instead of eating donuts and writing reports, (or fighting with your latest architectural software glitch).

I'm well aware of Joe Wambaugh.  Apparently you never read "The Onion Field" or heard of The Newhall Incident.   Guess you don't know anything about the FBI shootout in Miami, or the North Hollywood shootout either.

Cops are VERY mentally brave.  We run TO the gun fire, whereas you and your iron and mine workers will all run away.

I have been retired for 17 years now, and I will STILL run TO a cop in trouble.

Those iron joist walkers, miners and roofers don't put their lives on the line for complete strangers for low pay and no respect, either.
When is the last time someone spit on or attacked one of THEM just because of their job?

No, a cop's complete shift is not 100% danger, but it can happen in a split second, and even then, sitting around eating donuts is bullshit.
Who do you think watches your house while you are at work during the day, or sound asleep at night?
Who do you think is probably the first one to see your house is on fire at 2:00 AM, like I have done several times?
Who is out there stopping the speeder that flies down a 25 MPH street doing 60 while kids are playing a little bit farther up the road?
Cops are not firemen, sitting around polishing things, waiting for the alarm to sound.
We STAY busy, and those reports we write (and you ridicule) are the basis for convicting criminals and getting them off the street.

BTW, I was NOT dissing firemen.  Those folks are VERY brave, and I would never do what THEY do!
We and our FD worked well together.
I did go into a few houses before the smoke eaters showed up, but I tried not to.
