I'm Gen X. Our parents needed a commercial to come on TV at 10pm reminding them they had kids


We left the house in the morning and we're gone all day and came home at night. Parents never knew where we were

Hell my school growing up you had to so far away from it in order to be able to ride a bus. The number of times I walked to and from school at ages 8-15 range in the dozens and it was at least 2 miles or more 1 way

I'm Gen X. Our parents needed a commercial to come on TV at 10pm reminding them they had kids


We left the house in the morning and we're gone all day and came home at night. Parents never knew where we were. And this was most of the kids in the neighborhood

Hell my school growing up you had to so far away from it in order to be able to ride a bus. The number of times I walked to and from school at ages 8-15 range in the many dozens and it was at least 2 miles or more 1 way

When my mother passed away my best friend, a minister, conducted the service. He didn't preach, but instead reminisced about growing up in our old neighborhood. He spoke of us roaming the neighborhood all day and never getting in trouble or being in danger. He said there was always a mother or father on every block that saw us out a window or while sitting on a porch, and would tell our parents if we did anything wrong or watch after us if anything suspicious happened. He spoke of the neighbor that would ask us if we wanted a glass of water, or had a cake or cookies on the kitchen table that we would be offered.
Those days are mostly gone now. People in neighborhoods generally don't know their neighbors any more, or sit on their porch and wave at every car that drives down the street. Where I live has a neighborhood watch program that meets monthly and we drive through the area randomly and have the sheriffs department on speed dial. Anything suspicious is noted and reported. We need more neighborhoods like that in this country.

The only problem is that in heavily liberal areas of our country LE is so overwhelmed dealing with crime that in many places they won't even show up unless it's a violent crime.

Sure, we had the "hoods" and the gangs of juvenile delinquents, but as a general rule, THEY knew what lines they could not cross.  If they DID get in serious trouble, they didn't get sent home to Mommy with a slap on the wrist.

Trying to compare kids in the 2000's to kids from the 1950's and 60's is ludicrous.

I never heard about it from my parents at the time, but as you'd expect, it was a big deal to all the parents.
The point is, I doubt then that it even made the local papers, let alone any TV news. Today, it would be all over TV and the internet and every ice cream truck driver in America would be a suspect, and the urban myth that all ice cream truck drivers are child molesters would be born....
