When I was a little kid, the guy driving the ice cream trunk around the neighborhood was arrested for abducting a kid.
I never heard about it from my parents at the time, but as you'd expect, it was a big deal to all the parents.
The point is, I doubt then that it even made the local papers, let alone any TV news. Today, it would be all over TV and the internet and every ice cream truck driver in America would be a suspect, and the urban myth that all ice cream truck drivers are child molesters would be born....

I never said it NEVER happened.

And the ice cream truck guy was not a juvenile criminal who made a career out of criminal activities like we have today.

Nowadays, kids are more likely to be victims of other kids, not adult perverts.

As a sidenote, this past Halloween I saw lots of kids with costumes, but none were knocking on doors. They were all going to to a giant Halloween party the City and some civic orgs run for the kids.
Sign of the times, I guess. Not a single knock on my door this year.

I'm not aware of any door-to-door trick or treating in my town this year, either.

I think 2 factors play into that.
1) People don't trust other people to not tamper with the "treats" they give out.  In our day, we got homemade popcorn balls and candy apples, and no one questioned that there might be something wrong with them.
2) Thanks to Bitem and Harris, candy is too expensive to hand out to strangers.
