The 2024 election reveals an uncomfortable truth: The Golden State is irreparably divided

California’s irreparable divide
“ Trump’s star rises as California shifts to political center. ‘Even progressives have limits’ ,” (sacbee.com, Nov. 10)
The outcome of the 2024 Election reveals an uncomfortable truth: The Golden State is irreparably divided.
California, like myriad states in our beleaguered Union, has a cultural fault line between virulently incongruous ideologies. Urban, coastal areas overwhelmingly supported Vice President Kamala Harris, whereas President-elect Donald Trump painted rural, inland California red. This societal rift will haunt the state for decades to come.
California’s disparate regions are mired in a loveless marriage. It is the political equivalent of the 1989 film “War of the Roses,” wherein two bitter spouses continue sharing their marital residence while undergoing brutal divorce proceedings. Spoiler alert: The movie does not have a happy ending.
Thankfully, there is a solution: Coastal and inland California should amicably divorce. While liberals maintain the coast, conservatives could establish a new state or merge with a neighboring state. People would still benefit from mutual commerce while discarding a failed political union.

A very valid point. The author is exactly right. The divide is irreparable and neither side intends to move toward the other. A more loveless political union in this country does not exist. A state from the top of Humboldt county along the coast to Mexico and the Bay areas counties plus Yolo and Sacramento as one state and all the rest as another. Or to avoid messing with the senate everything north of Sacramento inland goes to Oregon, everything east and south of Sacramento to the grapevine goes to Nevada, the inland empire to Arizona and the coast except Del Norte remain California .

Better idea: Move to a place that better suits your politics....and be careful about that doorknob.

Better idea: Move to a place that better suits your politics....and be careful about that doorknob. Nope. Where l live suits my politics and everything else for me. I’m not changing where I live or what I believe. We in red areas and we added 8 red counties back this year that had been. So we will stay and we will be conservatives and live as such here and openly defy the state where it interferes with our local ability to do so. The author is right and we intend to do nothing to heal the divide whatsoever and either the rest of the state turns red or we get to be part of another state while living here or we become increasingly dysfunctional as a state. The coastal urban areas can let the inland areas live as we see fit “left alone” as part of the state and we could settle for that with no state laws banning what a school board, city, county does…or we will take your money as tax payers here and make it as divisively dysfunctional as we possibly can as loyal citizens.

It does as long as local rule applies and the state doesn’t try to outlaw things local school boards, cities, counties do as conservatives living in our parts of the state.

Then what is the problem? Don't ask me. YOU suggested he move. He’s just bitter that we turned out so strong in the red areas of the state that we were able to deny his /Harris running up the score here to win the national popular vote. I told him that she would draw a strong turn out and anti Kamala vote stronger than vs a democrat from anywhere else in the red parts of the state and we did just that.

Did you check the tally lately? You turned out better than the massacre you endured in 2020. Congrats.

Then reread what I said. We narrowed the margin here enough to deny Harris the popular vote win vs Trump. We never expected to outright win this year. Making gains among the states Asian American and African American men, Hispanic Americans and especially inland Hispanic populations is a positive sign for us. We have a presence in LA county and the Bay Area to expand upon with the working and middle class minority communities. We will be relying on our congressional majority and Trump to advance our forestry and agriculture and water issues as well as to ease the ridiculous EV mandate and make sure natural gas heat and appliances remain. Our assembly leader wrote an open letter to Trump seeking his help on our issues.

One Of California's Best Christmas Towns Offers Festivities & Several Acres Of Themed Gardens Nov. 16, 2024 6:00 pm EST Lake Shasta, near Redding, California Haizhan Zheng/Getty Images When planning a California vacation, most travelers tend to stick to the southern half of the state. While it's true that Los Angeles has the most tourist attractions (including various free activities throughout the city) and best beaches, Northern California (aka NorCal) shouldn't be ignored. If you love outdoor adventures and the vibe of the Old West, this region has many spots that are worthy of your next vacation. For example, you can stroll through historic Gold Rush towns in the mountainous, adventure-filled haven of Gold Country, or you can dip your toes in the crystal blue waters of Lake Shasta. Speaking of Lake Shasta, there's a city located just south that is perfect for a holiday-themed trip. Redding, California, is one of the largest cities in NorCal and the gateway to the Golden State by virtue of being the first major stop on the route south along I-5. While Redding is a fabulous city in its own right, it becomes a magical wonderland during the holiday season. So, dress up in your favorite Christmas sweater and let's check it out. Why Redding, California is so full of holiday spirit Whiskeytown Lake caphotojohn/instagram There are a few reasons why Redding decides to go all-out for the holiday season. First, the city gets around 300 sunny days per year, and with so many nice days, it's easy to celebrate all fall and winter long. Second, the holiday spirit allows Redding to attract new visitors and residents to keep the area growing. That's partly why there are so many holiday events and festivals near the end of the year (more on those later). Although Redding didn't start out as a tourism center, the city has evolved from its humble beginnings as little more than a railroad station. In fact, the city got its name from a land agent for the Southern Pacific Railroad named Benjamin B. Redding, who decided to route the tracks through the site of the current city, helping to shape its future. In the early days, Redding (the city, not the man) was known for its extensive mining operations. Nearby mines extracted copper and iron, bringing jobs and residents to the area. However, by 1920, mining declined, and the city did, too. Then, Redding shifted to tourism with the construction of the Shasta and Whiskeytown Dams. These dams helped create gorgeous natural spaces that still exist to this day. How to celebrate the holidays in Redding The holiday season begins in late November and runs through the end of the year in Redding, and there are so many things to do. If you're in the city during the early days of December, you can see the Christmas Tree lighting ceremony, the Lighted Christmas Parade (both in downtown Redding), and the Old Time Holiday Celebration at Shasta State Historic Park. If you're into live performances, the Redding Civic Auditorium and the Cascade Theater host a variety of Christmas-themed plays, musicals, and other shows. For 2024, examples include a "Nutcracker" musical, Manheim Steamroller, "Narnia: the Musical," and "Elf: the Musical." These shows are suitable for all ages, and they're sure to get everyone in the holiday spirit. But just because you're in Redding during the holidays doesn't mean you should ignore its year-round attractions. The Sundial Bridge is a spectacular sight that crosses the Sacramento River. Turtle Bay Exploration Park is always fun, and it's decked out in Christmas lights from November to January. If you're the gambling type, you can head south to the Win River Casino and Resort…. As divided as we are as one state, once we go our own ways we can still go back and forth as tourists between our areas. Trade and water are regulated by the federal government so no issues there either after the hopefully amicable break up.
