It seems that the NCAA is going to phase out the NCAA sanctions against Penn State in the next year or so. The NCAA strongly hinted that the bowl ban will be lifted very shortly. Penn State will be back up to 85 scholarships in 2016-2017 and will be able to have a full 25 scholarship class beginning next year. The 60 million dollar fine is still being disputed. Pennsylvania politicians want the money spent in state while the NCAA has other intentions on how to charitably spend the money. The NCAA is in the process of suing the Commonwealth of PA and Penn State's annual fine payment is just sitting in escrow until the legal challenges are settled.
The criminal trials against Spanier/Curley/Schultz will likely begin in the Spring as Spanier/Curley/Schultz have run out of legal tactics to delay the start of the trial. Most pundits and experts who are following the case believe it is going to be long and extremely contentious. The preliminary hearing was nasty and that was just the preliminary hearing. Mike McQueary is not going to have a fun Spring.
Last year, Tom Corbett filed an anti-trust lawsuit against the NCAA. The NCAA was successful in getting the lawsuit filed by the commonwealth of PA thrown out due to lack of standing by the commonwealth. Similarly, the NCAA is trying to do the same against the lawsuit initiated by the Paterno estate. Currently, a judge is considering the NCAA's request to dismiss the lawsuit based on lack of standing by Paterno. The judge has not set a timetable for the decision. Although, based on what I know about how this stuff works...some clerk who has recently graduated from an ivy league law school has already written the judge's opinion. I'm hearing that the Paterno's and their representatives are very confident about their chances in the case moving forward though. But who knows.
Recently elected State Attorney General Kathleen Kane has been awesome in her short time in office. As she promised, she has made Governor Tom Corbett's job a nightmare. She has challenged the Governor on almost everything he's tried to do. My favorite has been her refusal to defend the state's ban on gay marriage. Although that's probably something she's not allowed to do. But that's another issue. Anyway, Last year, she hired a special prosecutor to investigate Corbett's role in the Sandusky scandal. She refuses to announce when she's going to publically release the prosecutor's findings. But, word has leaked that it's going to be based on Sandusky victim #1 (Aaron Parker). The prosecutor has spent a lot of time in Parker's hometown. Aaron Parker has been vocal about Corbett delaying the arrest of Sandusky because of his campaign for governor.
And lastly...Spanier intends to sue Louis Freeh for defemation. But Spanier wants to delay the lawsuit until after the criminal trials b/c he wants witnesses to testify against Freeh after the criminal proceedings. In what many would call ironic, Freeh wants the lawsuit filed immediately b/c he is upset that his name is being dragged through the mud without a chance at a rebuttal.
