UF 81 Vandy 74 At The Buzzer: floridagators.com/news/2017/12/30/chris-harry-at-the-buzzer-florida-vanderbilt-dec-30.aspxThe Gators improved to 9-4 (1-0). Next up at Texas A&M on Tuesday night. The Aggies are solidly getting beat at a good bama team tonight so they will be loaded to bear so as to avoid opening SEC play at 0-2. The comments remain unchanged that John Egbunu isn't returning until late in January. The Gators could sure use his inside presence now.

The Gators looked like they were having fun and they were fun to watch. I think the team has turned the corner defensively which is helping them to play looser offensively. UF opened SEC play 2-0 with an 83-66 win over the aggies that wasn't as close as the final score: floridagators.com/news/2018/1/3/chris-harry-gators-drop-hailstorm-of-3s-on-no-11-aggies.aspxJohn Egbunu is still out until towards the end of January and Chase Johnson is still in concussion protocol.

The Gators are bracing for a Three-For-All at Mizzou: www.gatorsports.com/2018/01/gators-bracing-three-missouri/The game is on CBS at 1 PM EST. We'll see today if UF continues to improve on both ends of the floor. There has been no question that the team can score a ton of points as the Gators proved opening the season. However, Mike White broke the team down and demanded that the players focus on improving defensively. It interrupted the offensive process and the Gators picked up losses during the process, but it looks like the defensive requirement is finally paying dividends. UF totally dominated a good aTm team in College Station on Wednesday night. The question is will the Gators continue to improve on both ends of the floor at Mizzou. Unlike at aTm, the Gators will have to vigorously defend the 3 point line out a foot or two further as the Tigers shoot the 3 ball as well as UF. To top the Mizzou offense, the Tigers have a good inside game too. UF will have to find a way to defend both or take away one aspect of the Tigers offensive game. If it were my decision, I'd defend the 3 point line as if it was the Holy Grail and let UF's inside players do the best they can fending for themselves. I don't think you can defend a good Mizzou simultaneously both inside and outside. The Tigers at 11-3 (1-0) are a much improved team with new HC Cuonzo Martin who is back in the SEC after moving from Tennessee to Stanford to Mizzou.

Mizzou Box Score: floridagators.com/documents/2018/1/6/2018_01_06_UF_at_Mizzou.pdfFor the second straight game, UF played out to 9 deep. I'd like to see UF get back to playing 10 to 11 deep to keep the team fresh in SEC play. Chase Johnson is still on concussion protocol, but is likely back this coming week as I read somewhere that the coaching staff is using an abundance of caution to make sure he is completely well. I continue to be surprised that Dontay Bassett, 6'9"/240, isn't getting a few minutes in each half to help keep the front court fresh and to put a bigger body in for some defense situations.

Deaundre Ballard missed his second straight game. Chase Johnson is still out on concussion protocol since Thanksgiving. Gorjak Gak got knocked out with a concussion in the first half, and the refs allowed Ole Miss to mug the Gators in a way I haven't seen since the at USC game last season. The result: Ole Miss 78 Florida 72 floridagators.com/news/2018/1/13/chris-harry-rebels-body-up-on-gators.aspxThe refs were the worst I've seen this season and UF didn't have enough players to overcome. It really was as simple as that.

Gorjak Gak, PF/C, is out vs. Arkansas Wednesday night. Deaundre Ballard, SG/SF, will be back after missing the last 2 games due to illness. Chase Johnson, SF/PF, is back at practice and is day to day, but I'm guessing Mike White will want to get some conditioning under his belt or limit his minutes. The great news is John Egbunu started non-contact practice on Monday. If the knee responds well, I'm thinking he could start seeing minutes in the game this coming weekend or next week. Big John will be a big plus for the team if he can go play. It'll all depend on how the knee responds as to how much he can play. www.seccountry.com/florida/mike-white-provides-encouraging-report-florida-c-john-egbunu-timetable-return-unchanged

UF Sweep at UK Weekend: On Friday night, the UF gymnastics team won a close match over UK. On Saturday night, the men's basketball team won 66-64 at Rupp for the 4th time since 2006: floridagators.com/news/2018/1/20/chris-harry-at-the-buzzer-kentucky-florida-jan-20.aspxThe last 3 times UF won at Rupp, the Gators won back to back national championships in 2006-07 and lost in the national semifinal to national champion Connecticut in 2014. It'll be interesting to see how the 2018 squad fares as UF will be getting John Egbunu back likely this coming week along with Chase Johnson off injury and Gorjak Gak off of concussion protocol. UF will soon be at full strength for the first time this season. UF's record advanced to 14-5 (6-1) which is the SEC lead again this week. Next up: South Carolina in Gainesville on Wednesday night. Last week, the gamecocks split 2 home games beating UK by 8 and losing to UT by 7. USC is good, but not as good as last season when they eliminated UF in the Elite Eight.
