and my kids look at me like I'm a rack of lawn tools at Sears?"
Alright ladies...not much blood was spilled after the first week, but to say there are some fantastic games this weekend is an understatement. It will be a good Saturday to sit on the couch in your underwear eating Cheetos...
Ya know, I'm gonna go ahead and throw the Thursday game on there, but only because I can't find 10 other games. Everyone is trying to point to that one like it is some sort of trendy, sexy pick of an upset....
THURSDAY NIGHT:
Arizona -7 at UT San Antonio. Yeah yeah, Larry Coker is returning 500 starters, and they beat the shit out of Houston last weekend. But a mere touchdown!?!?! Color me dumbfounded. I think this is easy money. Wildcats
FRIDAY NIGHT:
Pitt -4 at Boston College. The Panthers obliterated their opponent in week 1 to the tune of 62-0. Boston College scored about half that in their win over UMass. I recognize the opponent was Delaware (or some such sacrificial lamb), but 62-0 is an impressive score. I recall from last year that Pitt has some playmakers. BC is sportin' Tyler Murphy, the dual threat transfer from the Gators. Bottom line is, there isn't a whole lot to know about these teams yet. Both had overmatched opponents in week one. I think Pitt is a bit more dynamic, while BC is at home. Pitt rushed for over 400 yards (holy hell). BC rushed for nearly 350. LOL I'll take the Panthers but who really knows?
SATURDAY'S ENJOYMENT:
Navy -3 at Temple. I include this game as much because a couple of you scoffed at it earlier this week. Navy put up a great fight against Ohio State, rushing for a shit ton, while Temple quietly beat the shit out of Vandy. You knew that the Buckeyes' talent would probably prevail at the end, but you gotta give credit to the Middies for hanging tough for 3+ quarters. I just think their option attack is too good for the Owls, even on the road. Midshipmen
Southern California +2 1/2 at Stanford. The mighty Trojans take their show on the road against the fabled trees. USC had the more impressive win last weekend, but only because Fresno State has had some relative success in years past, but no longer has Derek Carr roaming the offensive backfield. UC Davis didn't have a prayer as Stanford beat them like it should. I think both teams have significant talent, but I think Stanford has better depth. Plus, they're at home. Should be a good game though. Stanford
Michigan State +12 at Oregon. Ah yes...the granddaddy of the weekend. The one that everyone has been circling for 3 months. Sparty takes its vaunted defense on the road to Autzen to test the flashy speed of Oregon. I keep staring at this line and trying to figure out what Vegas knows that I don't know. That line is obviously begging for a Sparty pick, given Oregon's struggles against teams who line it up to pound on you, a la Stanford. Michigan State does that, don't they? And I'm guessing they're going to be very good on defense. Autzen is admittedly one of the better home field advantages in the game, but 12 points??? I just think that's too many. Michigan State has lost 1 game by more than 12 points in the past 2 years. I think they're good enough to slow down Oregon, and may even win it outright. Sparty
East Carolina +16 at South Carolina. Kind of unfortunate timing for the Pirates, due to the Gamecocks losing. Had Carolina won last weekend, this one would be setting up as a major trap game for the chickens because East Carolina is no joke. With Georgia on the horizon, the Gamecocks would lose their mind if they went 0-3, and for that reason, I don't see them losing this game. But a spread of more than 2 touchdowns? Hmmm... Plus, unless I'm mistaken, I think Mike Davis will be a bit gimpy for this one too. I smell a back door cover here. What the hell....I like the spread. Pirates
Michigan +4 1/2 at Notre Dame. I thought we weren't doing this game anymore? Do my eyes deceive me? I suppose we gotta throw this one in the mix as well. Notre Dame looked awfully good with Golson back at the helm against Uncle Ben's squad from Texas. Michigan stomped Appalachian State in a quasi-revenge game from half a dozen years ago. I really don't know much about Michigan this year, except I think Devin Gardner is in his 33rd season as starting quarterback. He has a nice weapon in Funchess...but again, the opponent lacked a pulse. I think Michigan is improved, and Notre Dame has lost a handful of impact players due to academic scandals of some sort. The game being in South Bend, I think it'll be nip and tuck. The line looks about right to me...so I feel like it is a coin flip. I'll take Michigan and the points.
BYU +1 at Texas. Again, early in the season, both teams coming off a win over an overmatched opponent. BYU won on the road at UCONN, but gave up over 350 yards in the proces, while Texas, debuting under Charlie Strong, turned in a very nice performance against North Texas. I like this position for Texas. Strong coach, good opening week win, played well and did what you're supposed to do against a weak opponent. Now they have some payback coming to BYU, who is on the road again. I like the Longhorns here.
Virginia Tech +11 at Ohio State. I think it boils down to, which Ohio State shows up? The one that looked quasi-lost for the first 3 quarters against Navy, or the one that caught stride in the 4th quarter and ran away with it? Virginia Tech is another mystery. Yeah, they beat Mary & William by over 3 touchdowns, but the game was 7-6 until late in the 2nd quarter. By the same token, VT did show that its defense is still a force, holding the Tribe to 193 yards, forcing 3 fumbles, and had 4 sacks.
With all of that said, I see this sort of similar to the Alabama game last year. It will look and feel like Virginia Tech plays a solid game, but they still lose by 2 touchdowns. I'll take the Buckeyes at home.
And last but not least...
Colorado State +11 at Boise State. Looking at the weekend slate, it came down to this game, or the Mizzou-Toledo game, and I flipped a coin. Colorado State beat up on the Buffalos last weekend, and Boise State lost in an ugly game against Ole Miss. I honestly have no idea, but I did see that Boise State stunk up the joint and Colorado State won comfortably. I like the 11 points too...even on the road. Colorado State
Good luck all.
