1. +17 2. +11 3. +9 4T. +5 4T. +5 6T. +3 6T. +3 8T. +1 8T. +1
Nine of our twenty players are above the Mendoza line. That's really good for after 11 weeks. The competition is pushing us all to be better.

Lol. I believe the lead is still in double digits. Repeat this next week and it's a horse race. I still like where I am. Wherever that is. Mark Scott Tosu 81 I believe Gene Mauch said much the same thing. Next thing you know, Chico Ruiz will come to the plate, with Vada Pinson on deck.... You are definitely dating yourself there. Pinson was one of my grandpa's favorite players when he was w cincy. Mark Scott Tosu 81

By my count, you are +17 and I am +11. This week was a 10 put swing, which of course, I am ok with. Uh oh. Better not look back...

Pinson was one of my grandpa's favorite players when he was w cincy. Mark Scott Tosu 81 The really sad part of the game back then was that nothing was televised. I have all these memories of really great players I heard play while listening to the games and Vin Scully calling them, but I rarely ever saw their play. You'd see them once in a while on a Saturday game or the All Star game and maybe in the World Series and that was about it. So, for instance, I don't think I ever saw Ernie Banks play. I heard Scully tell me about Bank's play, but I don't think I ever saw it. My parents didn't have the money to go to many games, the Cubs were virtually never contenders, and were obviously never in the post season, and so were almost never televised nationally. I did get to see Mays and McCovey et al, because the only games the Dodgers televised were the Giants away games. That was it. I used to like Vada Pinson for no particular reason. I think, probably it was because the name was kind of a curiosity for me as a kid. But if it wasn't for baseball cards, I'd have never known what he looked like, and I certainly never saw him play.

Living in Chicago in the 60's I got to see Ernie play many, many times. And Billy Williams, Ron Santo, Ferguson Jenkins, Don Kessinger, Glenn Beckert, Adolfo Phillips, Randy Hundley... Still my favorite team of all time and I've never changed my team allegiance.

But if it wasn't for baseball cards, I'd have never known what he looked like, and I certainly never saw him play. my grandfather and great grandfather both grew up south of the ohio river (grandpa in tenn then ky, great papaw in ky) and both were reds fans. they would spend their evenings on the back porch, one drinking hudepohl (ugh), the other sippin' whiskey, and listen to the game on the radio nearly every night. one was a metal cutter, the other worked in the coal mines, and it was how they relaxed during the week in the summers. to imagine what was happening via the broadcast. the first guy i remember was waite hoyt back in the mid 60s, but the guys i remember most were al michaels and joe nuxhall in the early 70s, then marty brennamann replacing michaels in the mid 70s. i'll never forget the first major league game i saw in person in '68 at crosley field. 4 generations (me, dad, and those two above). never realized how special that was til much later. wish we'd had a camera at the game. i know i brought this up previously... but that aroma in a ballpark... nothing like it. mark scott tosu 81 ps-btw, back in the 50s, there was a guy who hosted 'home run derby' on tv who did reds broadcasts for just a year. he had a great name... just can't recall it....

I guess it's generational, but I actually prefer listening to games on the radio to watching on TV. I leave the TV on so that I can get up and see the replay of a notable play, but other than that, I find the TV distracting to the notion of relaxing after work on a warm summer evening. A cigar, a splash of a good distilled libation and the ol' ballgame....it's all good. Amazingly, I used to listen to Scully call games when I was in elementary school back in the early 60s....and I STILL listen to Scully call the games.
