since everyone else in the universe is talking about it, might as well open it up here for debate...
before i begin, i should admit that i have had a man crush and chase utley since he was brought up by the phillies in 2003. he's awesome. he's currently just a shell of his former self, but he's still pretty awesome.
i've seen the play he made into 2nd base a billion times. yes, it was dirty but his intent was to prevent a double play and not break his leg. and it was within the rules of the game. if this particular play didn't infuriate the new york media, if it didn't break the guys leg, no one would be talking about it. he was only suspended b/c the new york media is ruthless and unrelenting.

I have a 3" scar on my right inner leg, just above my knee where a Pony League player tried to take me out with his spikes while I was taking the throw at third base to catch him stealing...If he'd gone for the bag instead of my leg, he probably would have been safe...he was out, and I did fall on him kinda hard...BUT - it's all part of the game, and has been for a long time. Read about Ty Cobb... Dirty? No way in hell...

Yeah, you take out the SS or 2B you have to at least try to make it look like you are going to the bag. What I don't understand is, on review, he is called safe? He still hasn't tagged the bag. If I was the MLB discipline czar, he would not play again until Tejada has returned and shown he is able to play. And if I were a Mets pitcher I think he'd probably be wearing several dots over the course of the next year, such as every PA that putting him on first doesn't have the potential to hurt me.

I am a Mets fan so I am not answering this question. I'm a Royals fan and this rule use to be called the McRae rule, for long time KC DH Hall McRae. I remember when he annihilatedWillie Randolph of the Yankees. It really was a different, more physical game back then and players didn't socialize as much. Many literally hated the other teams like the fans did.

Sweep the leg...funny. The actor from Karate Kid is named Marty Kove...very nice guy. Long story, but somewhere I've got a video of him with my family from a few years back at a film festival in Lone Pine, CA.

As apparently the lone Dodger fan here, I looked at the play as just big boy baseball. Utley's job is to bust up the double play in a way that isn't illegal, or more precisely, isn't RULED illegal. That is what he did. That someone got hurt is unfortunate, but had nobody gotten hurt, this would be a non-issue, and had Utley been a Met and the rolls reversed, the Met media would have been all over him for NOT taking out the Dodger SS.
All these comments here about who should do what in retaliation is precisely what happens in baseball every day. This is major league baseball. No participation trophies.

FTR, you aren't the only Dodger fan here. Been following them since 1963. My favorite player growing up was "the Jewish kid" as Casey Stengel used to refer to Sandy Koufax.
