University comment on Spanier trial decision March 24, 2017 Penn State has issued a statement following a verdict in the trial of former University president, Graham Spanier. First and foremost, our thoughts remain with the victims of Jerry Sandusky. Five years ago, as the crisis emerged, Penn State’s Board of Trustees took immediate action to change the leadership of the University, instructed the administration to institute new policies and procedures, and set in motion a process to ensure the University was doing everything it could to establish a model ethics and compliance culture meant to ensure the safety of the Penn State community. The University launched a series of new initiatives with the sense of urgency demanded by the Board, while at the same time waiting for the justice system to bring a measure of resolution to the criminal cases that emerged. With today’s decision, we have that closure. A jury today found former President Graham Spanier guilty of one count of endangering the welfare of a child. Recently, two former senior level administrators, Tim Curley and Gary Schultz, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor of endangering the welfare of a child, reportedly stating in part that, in the case of Curley: “I pleaded guilty because I felt like I should have done more,” and Schultz: “I felt I had been deficient in not reporting it myself.” The verdict, their words and pleas indicate a profound failure of leadership. Penn State has extraordinary expectations of our leaders, who must set and maintain the example for reporting, ethics and compliance that reflect best practices. In the view of the jury, with respect to Spanier, and by their own admission, as to Curley and Schultz, these former leaders fell short. And while we cannot undo the past, we have re-dedicated ourselves and our University to act always with the highest integrity, in affirming the shared values of our community. Over the past five years, Penn State has taken aggressive steps to strengthen accountability and focus on the fight against child maltreatment. We have endorsed a standard of strict compliance, and we will continue our vigorous efforts to create a model culture of reporting, safety and accountability. This has led to the development of many best-in-class initiatives. Further, beginning in 2011, Penn State made a substantial investment to create and support a network of researchers and educators to concentrate on solving the complex problems of child maltreatment. We remain firmly committed today and in the future to societal progress in the fight to protect the wellbeing of all children.
Doesn't that all sound good, and nice, almost pious... Of course, if the university was as pious as this statement would lead you to believe, they'd never have allowed Paterno's records to be reinstated or any image of him used within the university at any point in the future. They'd totally disavow him as being a leader of men. He lied and he did everything possible to keep Penn State from facing the NCAA's wrath (and that of law enforcement) by covering up Sandusky's crimes for years. Anyone who doesn't believe he knew all along is either willfully stupid or simply doesn't care about truth, and only wants the program protected at all costs.

Al Lord is a close personal friend of Spaniers. In fact, Lord has been bankrolling Spanier in his lawsuit against Freeh. I assume you are one of the many today who believes that Al Lord's opinion speaks for everyone tied to Penn State?

They're so outrageous, more than a couple Ohio State boards have nicknamed y'all Baboons With Internet. I pay no heed to your assumptions, for various reasons, but the primary being that you assumed JoePa was innocent. (ASS U ME)

(ASS U ME) and if you go on baylor message boards, i'm sure there are delusional fans who believe they did no wrong. just the nature of fandom. your defensive coordinator knew of allegations against sandusky and chose to do nothing. ohio state fans dontseem to care. al lord was obviously frustrated by spanier's guilty verdict b/c as i said, they are very close. he said something he may personally believe but will likely realize in a lil bit of time that he should not have stated publicly.

You people are just "strange."

"you people"? lol. could you be any more small minded? seriously. look. i don't agree with al lord. i think spanier was properly penalized b/c he wasn't more vigilant with facts presented to him and people suffered b/c of it. i think paterno should had done more too but i didn't think it was right for the university to throw him under a bus. stop painting me with some sort of broad brush. it's easy to get mad at penn state fans b/c of sandusky but it's uncalled for and intellectually dishonest as most psu fans dont see the scandal in the way you think we see it.

LOL...that really is funny, after all your BS just on THIS board. Then there's YOU times over 100 at one time on BWI. And then, again, after all this time, from someone STILL on the Board of Trustees... Just because JoePa's statue was pulled down didn't seem to affect his Altar. "YOU PEOPLE" seems MOST appropriate. And 'strange' was being NICE.

This has bugged me for a while, and isn't the first time you've projected your speculation & innuendo in that direction...and while it MIGHT be possible, we are talking a VERY narrow window here... According to the investigations, Sandusky began terrorizing little boys around 1994. (Sandusky was arrested and charged with 52 counts of sexual abuse of young boys over a 15-year period from 1994 to 2009.) Greg Schiano was at Ped State from 1990 as a GA thru 1995 as a DB coach. The infamous incident witnessed by Mike McQueery wasn't until 2002. But in YOUR mind, JoePa knew nothing in spite of their time together, while Schiano is guilty with that short time span... And you wonder why most people here think you're a PedState idiot and unworthy of meaningful discourse....
