"Didn’t you once tell me that you had an uncle?" "Sure, I’ve got an uncle. Why?" "Now we’re getting somewhere. Is he living?" "No. He fell through a trap door and broke his neck." "Was he building a house?" "No, they were hanging him."
WEEK 6
NOTE THE THURSDAY GAME AND ACT ACCORDINGLY.
All rankings are AP Poll
5 OCTOBER 17
1. (4-1) #17LOUISVILLE -4 AT (4-1) NORTH CAROLINA STATE Louisville bounced back from their loss to Clemson with resounding wins over….uh…Kent St. and Murray State. Hmm…. NC State lost a close one to open the season and has reeled off 4 in a row since. Louisville’s D is suspect, giving up 28 to Purdue, and 35 to North Carolina. Take the home team. NORTH CAROLINA STATE
7 OCTOBER 17
2. (4-1) #21NOTRE DAME -15.5 AT (1-4) NORTH CAROLINA Is Notre Dame for real? Their only loss is to a Georgia team that is rounding into quite a good football team. They beat Michigan State but perhaps that was a Spartan meltdown more than an Irish beatdown. Still, North Carolina ain’t Georgia or MSU, and they come off consecutive losses where they scored just 24 points total. NOTRE DAME
3. (5-0) #4PENN STATE -14 AT (2-2) NORTHWESTERN On paper, this game shouldn’t be close, and certainly not 14 points close. But PSU didn’t travel terribly well to Iowa either, so what to do? Northwestern trailed Wisconsin 31-10 to start the 4th qtr last week. Only a back door cover saves them. PENN STATE
4. (3-1) MICHIGAN STATE +10.5 AT (4-0) #7 MICHIGAN State rivalry game. Michigan has been winning, but not by blowouts. They are shaping up to be a team where their D carries things. The Spartans played a ragged game against Notre Dame in their only loss. Unfortunately, MSU’s O ain’t nothin’ to write home about. Even with the points, MICHIGAN
5. (3-2) STANFORD -6.5 AT (4-0) #20 UTAH Wait. 4-0 Utah, ranked #20 playing at home against unranked Stanford (3-2) and you’re GIVING me points? Where do I sign up? Problem is, Utah hasn’t played a very hard schedule, though they did beat Arizona at Arizona in a manner not unlike Stanford beat ASU. So there’s that. Oh, and UTAH comes off a bye week. Gimme dem points. UTAH
6. (1-3) AIR FORCE +7.5 AT (4-0) NAVY Service Academy game. I thought this was going to be a bigger line than this, but maybe Vegas was impressed with the way AF stayed with San Diego St a few weeks ago. Okay, but that doesn’t explain how they were blown out by New Mexico last week, giving up 42 points in the second half. NAVY
7. (5-0) #11WASHINGTON STATE +2.5 AT (4-1) OREGON Fresh off their win against USC, Wazzu heads to Pullman to play an Oregon team that put the hurt to Cal last week. Two pretty even, high powered offenses that seem to be getting their grooves on. Tough pick, but I continue to think that winning in Pullman is a big deal, and worth more than the points the Ducks are laying. OREGON
8. (3-2) LSU +3.5 AT (3-1)#21FLORIDA I wouldn’t have even put this on the list, but it’s a bit of a rivalry game and besides, it’s a bit like watching a train wreck. Florida has been finding ways to win and LSU has not been finding ways to win. At the swamp, LSU is going to need more than 3.5 to get my pick FLORIDA
9. (4-0) #9 WISCONSIN -11.5 AT (3-2) NEBRASKA The Badgers travel to Lincoln after the workmanlike win over Northwestern last week. I know…you can’t get that Northern Illinois thing out of your mind can you? Well, it gets worse. Wisconsin gave up only 25 total yards on the ground last week against Northwestern, and the longest run all day was 12 yards. That’s going to be a problem for Nebraska’s O which prefers a run-first approach. WISCONSIN
10. (3-0) #13MIAMI -3 AT (1-2) FLORIDA STATE Seems like Florida State can’t stay off the game list. This week, the Hurricanes come to town to play the makeup for the 16Sept game. Miami has been looking mighty impressive lately, pounding Duke back into a basketball school last week. Florida beat Wake last week, but not terribly convincingly, and Miami is looking far better than Wake lately. I don’t think laying 3 is enough to stop me. MIAMI
11. (2-2) ARKANSAS -2.5 AT (3-2)SOUTH CAROLINA Neither team is going anywhere in the SEC, but it’s an interesting matchup. Arkansas has played a better schedule than Carolina, but what do you make of this? Arkansas lost to aTm 50-43, and then a week later, Carolina loses to aTm 24-17. Now they play each other. Thing is, I’m not sold on Carolina at all. ARKANSAS
(3-1) #23WEST VIRGINIA +13.5 AT (4-0) #9TCU Best game of the week, IMO. West Virginia has scored 50+ points in three straight games, but against teams that, well, a good team ought to put 50 up against. TCU continues to bask in the OSU win during a bye week. West Virginia can score. But so can TCU, putting up 100 points in their last two games. TEXAS CHRISTIAN
12. (4-1) SOUTHERN METHODIST +6.5 AT (3-1)HOUSTON Houston hasn’t shown much since beating Arizona to start their season, struggling to put Temple away last week, while SMU’s only loss is to TCU, a game where they put up 36 points in a losing effort. Add in the points, and I’ll take it. SMU
13. (2-2) ARIZONA +7 AT (3-2)COLORADO Colorado hasn’t beaten anyone with a pulse since their first game against Colorado State. Arizona comes to Boulder with a similar resume, having beaten nobody that matters. Arizona has a better offense and they get 7, so… ARIZONA
14. (2-2)PURDUE -4 AT (3-1)MINNESOTA Purdue has two losses to the #7 and #17 teams. Minnesota, meanwhile, has lost only to Maryland, and gave up 262 rushing yards in doing it. Purdue has a balanced O, so if they can establish the run, 4 points is nothin’ PURDUE
15 (3-1) MARYLAND +31.5 AT #10 (4-1) OHIO STATE Tired of picking whether or not Bama can cover an outrageously large spread? Okay. Try this one on for size. Ohio State hosts the Terrapins, a team that has showed that it can score against nobodies, but that's it, has a pretty good running game, putting that stat you see above last week against Minnehaha, but had trouble with Central Florida, scoring only 10 in their only loss. But not so fast, my friend…guess which team has a better run D than Ohio St.? Central Florida is ranked 7th against the run in FBS, OSU is ranked 56th. MARYLAND.
