I don't post pictures so everyone will have to open the link to see the picture.www.wate.com/news/concrete-safe-room-saves-mississippi-family-of-4-from-tornado/?utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook_WATE_6_On_Your_Side&fbclid=IwAR3JWSLcYzhFNXRxIinh2kFqcAawZvNECm7MJ6yg13qeCQjWkG8fXsXd8doby: The Associated Press Posted: Apr 13, 2020 / 08:41 PM EDT / Updated: Apr 13, 2020 / 08:41 PM EDT Amber Phillips stands outside the family’s safe room, located on their property in Moss, Miss., following a tornado, Monday, April 13, 2020. While the rest of their home was obliterated in a matter of seconds Sunday afternoon, Phillips, her husband Andrew and their kids, ages 2 and 6 months, survived the storm without a scratch inside the small safe room, which doubles as a closet.(Andrew Phillips via AP) MOSS, Miss. (AP) — A Mississippi man says his family is alive because of a concrete room that survived a tornado which destroyed the rest of their home. With a twister bearing down on their rural home Sunday afternoon, Andrew Phillips told his wife to grab their two young children and get into the safest place they had: A small room built from concrete blocks. The cinder-block room is all that survived, and the family emerged uninjured. The family had been living in the house only a few weeks. Phillips says the safe room was one of the reasons they bought it.

Never understood why that isn't in the building code. Every building in a tornado prone area should have one.

There is a revival, of sorts, for root cellars/storm safe zones in the MW, maybe elsewhere. Block, dug into the earth, built into the side of the house/hill w slanted doors. No movie if Dorothy had made it into the storm cellar every farm in KS had. SOP. If you built a home back when in KS/OK and didn't have one...................Candidate for the Darwin Award.
In Wisconsin, being cheap, they are a bit more frugal.

Never understood why that isn't in the building code. Every building in a tornado prone area should have one. Never understood why every house in Commiefornia is not required to be earthquake-, mudslide- and wildfire-proof. Why isn't it required?
You sure love having the government butt in on every aspect of our lives.

It is required for new construction, doofus. So my new house in California will stand up through any earthquake, mudslide or wildfire? No more destroyed houses in California?
Wonderful!!

Maybe not, but you might live another day. I certainly wonder why some of the Cali folks live in homes grandfathered into existing code. During this event, I've enjoyed watching an Amazon Prime series called Bosch, based on a group of novels. Love his house view in Hollywood Hills overlooking LA. Supported by stilts on a hill side. WTF. Asked Walt. Grandfathered in. 2 BD, two bath, 1,100 sq ft house that'd cost you 1.5MM, maybe and you are two shakes from the bottom of the hill. Not just the owner's risk, however. The guy below you is forever looking up.

It is required for new construction, doofus. Fireproof? Concrete furniture? Asphalt sheets?Furniture is not part of a building and is not regulated. Fireproof? In fire zones, fire resistive measures are mandatory. Most new buildings require AFSS, including residential. "Asphalt sheets" ?? What is your question?

The guy below you is forever looking up. I've read several of the Bosch novels. I picture him as 25 pounds overweight, middle age, always a little tired. I don't do any movies on Hulu, Netflix, etc. In fact, I almost never watch movies if I have read the book. I get too disappointed in the movie. But I read my favorite books several times a year and I nearly always find something I don't remember and say, "Hah. That's interesting."

Most new buildings require AFSS, including residential. "Asphalt sheets" ?? What is your question? Fire "resistant" is not fire PROOF. If I am going to buy a house where fires are prevalent, I want my house to come through a fire unscathed, not counting cosmetic damage. A house built in a fire zone should be legally uninsurable, or require prohibitively expensive special fire insurance. That MIGHT stop people from being idiots.

Idiots? "If it keeps on raining Levee's going to break If it keeps on raining The levee's going to break When the levee breaks We'll have no place to stay". You were saying? Every place has risk. You're minimizing yours and maximizing others. Don't do that.

People who build houses in flood plains are just as stupid as the ones who live in fire-prone areas. New Orleans is proof of that. Half of that hellhole is at or BELOW sea level.
People want to feel sorry for the "poor negroes" who suffered during Hurricane Katrina. THEY were the idiots who were living in a temporarily empty swimming pool, not me.
Nice try, but FAIL. I don't support ANY idiots, which is why I am NOT a Demoncrat.

Come on...You asked for donations here to help your own family after they were flooded out a few years ago. And "Demoncrats" came to your aid.
