pro sports and covid

so my beloved eagles are facing the washington football team this weekend.  washington has 17 or so players unable to play b/c they tested positive for covid.  the point spread moved from the eagles being 2 pt favorites to being 7 pt favorites because of it.   cases throughout sports seem to be on the rise.  as people head into the holidays and avoid outside b/c of the cold weather, cases are going to spread.  especially if this new variant is as transmittable as it is advertised.  

my controversial take is that sports teams should stop testing for covid for any vaccinated athlete.  yes, the virus is transmittable even if you are vaccinated.  yes, you can test positive if you are fully vaccinated.  but this new variant is going to make everyone test positive at some point.  and if you are vaccinated, symptoms are very mild if anything.  i've read (although not confirmed by any means) that this new variant that is taking over struggles more to replicate in the lungs and is going to be primarily an upper respiratory virus, which means it will be much less severe.  the hospitalizations occur when the virus invades the lungs.  again, don't take my word but that would b very welcoming news if true.  

i wish the leagues would tell us how many athletes that are testing positive are actually sick.  if 95% of people testing positive don't feel sick, why not keep playing?  at this point, if you are immunocompromised or vulnerable, you should protect yourself via the vaccine.

The reason there have been so many new cases in sports is that they decided to start testing vaxed players, so more positives are showing up.
Not sure that essentially ignoring the problem in any way makes it better.

seems like with this variant, people are going to get infected no matter what.  it's just all confusing.  seems obvious by now that the vaccine limits the severity of the virus but the virus is still able to escape some immunity and infect you.  so if vaccines don't stop the spread of covid, do we just never go back to normal? 

we only know that these athletes are positive b/c daily testing is now a mandatory protocol in professional sports.  i feel very healthy today and maybe if i tested myself right now, i'd test positive as well b/c i took in a small viral load.  or maybe i was positive last week.  like i said, if you are vaccinated/boosted, lets stop testing.  otherwise, medical experts/biden should stop telling us to get vaccinated/boosted.   it just seems like there is a middle gray area that we are all missing.

You raise a good Q.
If the numbers show that statistically vaxed folk do not have any more risk than say, from normal flu, then I'd tend to agree with you. The unvaxed made their choice. Let them live or die by that choice.
However, as long as the COVID is around, there is a risk of a MORE dangerous mutant strain, so I would think it prudent to at least try to take simple steps like masking/social distance to limit the spread.
As a sidenote, last year was a very low regular cold and flu season because of the precautions taken for COVID, so there is a public health benefit to retaining some COVID measures just generally speaking.
