This new essay by psychologist Jonathan Haidt at The Atlantic is a fascinating read. WHY THE PAST 10 YEARS OF AMERICAN LIFE HAVE BEEN UNIQUELY STUPID It’s not just a phase.www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2022/05/social-media-democracy-trust-babel/629369/
April 11, 2022 Excerpt
Recent academic studies suggest that social media is indeed corrosive to trust in governments, news media, and people and institutions in general. A working paper that offers the most comprehensive review of the research, led by the social scientists Philipp Lorenz-Spreen and Lisa Oswald, concludes that “the large majority of reported associations between digital media use and trust appear to be detrimental for democracy.” The literature is complex—some studies show benefits, particularly in less developed democracies—but the review found that, on balance, social media amplifies political polarization; foments populism, especially right-wing populism; and is associated with the spread of misinformation.

Social media, because most of it is privately run, has fragmented society by blocking people who are speaking the truth on social media platforms. Just look at what Twitter, the Book of Faces, Youtube, and others run by leftwing nutcases have done to nullify free speech, if that free speech comes from conservatives and true patriots.

All I can say is that if employees of YouTube felt compelled to file a class-action lawsuit against YouTube because of mental distress associated with reviewing and purging objectional content, I do not think freedom of speech is the issue here. Reading about having to review uploads of rapes, child abuse, and other (fill in the blank of a disgusting act), I do not think you have a good idea of what you are talking about. It is a lot worse than most of us can imagine.

What do you think that police, firemen and EMT's who can't handle it do?
They shouldn't be reviewing and purging free speech to start with, dummy. What do you think FREE SPEECH means?

If someone beat and raped someone in your family and posted it to YouTube, would that just be 'free speech'?

If someone beat and raped someone in your family and posted it to YouTube, would that just be 'free speech'? Funny you should ask.......... This guy's video will be in the public domain at his trial, if he has one.
And look! It was a guy exercising his white privilege.

Hence, my Q to you. Free speech, or does FB have some editorial duty here?

Hence, my Q to you. Free speech, or does FB have some editorial duty here? NOT when it involves purely political speech and differing opinions. Social media doesn't even have the right to censor obvious lies, If they did, Demonrats couldn't say much.
There is a huge difference between calling out Demonrat lies and live streaming a murder. Even YOU should be able to figure that out.

Social media are private. They have the right to censor anything they want on their platform. If Musk buys Twitter, will he censor criticism of Musk? Count on it. He fires people at his companies now who do it. Would you be okay with that? I would. It would be his company.

Musk censoring criticism of himself seems to fly in the face of what the 1st amendment is all about, i.e. freedom of eXpression w/o fear of reprisal... as long as it's true.

So, "say whatever you want but I'll censor/ban you if I don't like what you say"? I can't buy that that's what the founding fathers had in mind.

Can you name any institution, from the Ohio State football team to ATT to the press sec of POTUS to the Catholic Church that allows unfettered access to their platform to post whatever a person might wish to say?
