I'm making a big batch of this today using Great Northern beans. The ham bone from Easter has a huge amount of meat left on it so it's in the smoker right now getting flavored up. I'll triple the beans and double or triple everything else (except the Herbes de Provence) and use organic chicken broth instead of water (sorry Robb, I don't have any homemade at the moment). Should turn out a winner! www.simplyrecipes.com/recipes/white_bean_and_ham_soup/

I used just the two teaspoons of Herbes de Provence because that stuff tends to really overpower. I used about six cloves of garlic and a boatload of the veggies, plus I added a big chunk of the ham, maybe about a pound, to the meatiful ham bone already in there.

Great way to use a leftover ham bone. I cook mine for hours to extract all the porkiful benefits of that bone. Try it with this mix; 2 cups of dried navy beans 1 cup dried butter beans Prepare above with your favorite baked beans instructions and cook until the butter beans are just tender enough to eat. throw in; The ham bone 1/2 cup cooked-to-crisp bacon 1 cup frozen or fresh green beans 1 Med chopped onion 4 Tbspns cider vinegar (or to taste) Cook for 4 hours at LOW temperature. Remove from heat. Remove ham bone & pieces of cartilage and large chunks of meat. Chop up the chunks oc meat and return them to the pot. Cover and refrigerate overnight, then heat and eat.

Good ideas, Robb! The soup turned out amazing - it was so rich and flavorful and tasted totally buttery. Except there was no butter in it.

I'm goin to the store now to get the hamhocks and beans....the recipe says to boil water and then soak beans for 2 hours...Is it better to just soak the beans overnight or what ? Dtls pls ....I'm gonna make the soup temari cause I already got leftovers for today so no big deal either way....

I didn't have time to do the overnight soak so I rinsed them real good and then let them soak for about an hour in cold water. Then I got a big pot of water really boiling, turned off the heat and put the beans in there covered for two hours. Drain (don't rinse) then dump into the other 12 qt. pot with the broth, herbes, pepper and hambone which had been simmering for an hour and a half already. I actually put the chopped garlic in about 15 minutes before the beans went in. I put the veggies in about a half hour later and then simmered everything for another hour to hour and a half. So my cooking time overall was longer than the recipe. It's the weirdest thing about the butter taste though. I would bet money that there was butter in this recipe by the taste of the finished product. Delicioso!!

I should have asked Robb I found my cooking time was longer if I soaked beans overnight. The beans always seemed to come out tough. Do it the boiled stove top way. And Jiffy can't help it, he's just a Cali forni kater.

Coaltrain has hit upon one of my many, many monikers over the years. I worked with a Russian engineer many years ago. It was my turn for goodie day so I got me some Jiffy muffin mix at the store and made blueberry muffins. From then on I was always called Jiffy in a heavy Russian accent, which morphed into Jiffy Pop, which morphed into Jiffy Lube... Just another of the many reasons the chicks dig me...

That's not enough beans. Are you using the 12 qt. pot? Then use 3 pounds of beans.
