The past few years, the offense has looked bad against really bad defenses, even in '12 when we won 11 games. We play 3 really bad defenses in the first 3 games, so that will be my first indication of improvement. If we score 40+ against them, it won't mean the offense is good, but it will be an improvement. At this point, I'll be happy with that. This. Even pre-injury last season, you could tell that the Gator offense wasn't good. If you aren't scoring 30-40 with ease, then there are still issues. It doesn't automatically mean you're going to suck....you are installing a brand new offense, but at the same time...if you struggle again, it will no doubt make the natives restless. I appreciate your optimism though. LOL Like I said...my heart is pulling for 0-12, but my head wants the Gators to be better so the end of the season whipping we lay on you will look better. At the same time though....would you really expect anything other than positive reports coming out of fall camp? I mean, do you expect Muschamp to come out and say, "Well, I don't think we're going to be very good this year...."Nope. The open practices have helped with that a bit so we're not getting just CoachSpeak this year. Of course, sometimes coaches can be brutally honest.

From Pat Dooley at the G'ville Sun:
The best thing that has come out of Florida's football camp this summer — very little news. There have been bumps and bruises (and the loss of true freshman defensive tackle Thomas Holley for the season), but after the disaster of unlucky 2013, the fact there have been no major injuries to anyone on the two-deep depth chart, no issues with players, nobody flunking out — at least as far as we know — has been good news. Yeah, I know I just jinxed the Gators. But I went out to a few practices last week and I can tell you it's a good-looking team. Will Muschamp keeps talking about how the roster is better offensively and he's not kidding. Part of it is that Florida finally hit on a pair of wide receiver recruits in Ahmad Fulwood and Demarcus Robinson. Part of it is the Gators have three quarterbacks they can win games with. Part of it is they are loaded at tailback. Part of it is they have Tyler Moore at guard instead of tackle. We all know this is going to be an interesting year. It might actually be a fun one.

I remember thinking how good Alex Anzalone looked in the Under Armour game last year. He's now healthy and making plays in practice. He'll get to play this season. At 6'3"/236, this kid could become a monster before his playing career is over with UF. Coming out of high school, his play reminded me of Brian Cushing who passed on UF, went to USC, and is now playing for the Houston Texans: www.gatorsports.com/article/20140821/ARTICLES/140829917?tc=crBoth Will Muschamp and DJ Durkin have mentioned him in post practice reports this week. I just hope he stays healthy so he has a chance to live up to his potential. Will Muschamp's comments: UF coach Will Muschamp said earlier this week that Anzalone is pushing for significant playing time. “I've been pleased with how Alex Anzalone is coming on,” Muschamp said. “He's playing both Sam and Mike (positions). He's been able to be a guy that has stepped in there and proved much from the first scrimmage to the second.”

Losing Seasons In Last 34 years (1979): Florida - 1 Georgia - 4 Alabama - 5 Texas A&M - 6 Auburn - 7 Tennessee - 8 LSU - 10 Arkansas - 10 South Carolina - 13 Mississippi - 17 Mississippi State - 19 Missouri - 20 Kentucky - 23 Vanderbilt - 30 Not to be a nitpicker, but if you are including 1979 the Gators were winless that year. That would make last year their second losing season in that time frame.

I'm posting on the general board the top 25 programs with the fewest losing seasons from the current major conferences during the modern era as defined by me to be 1964-2013 (50 years). Unless DJ Durkin not mentioning him was an oversight, it looks like Khairi Clark is intended so stay in the redshirt bullpen: www.gatorsports.com/article/20140821/ARTICLES/140829879?p=1&tc=pgWe'll see if Clark makes the depth chart when it comes out early next week. He would make it an even 3 deep at each DT position, but not being mentioned by your DC when discussing DL depth this late in fall practice is pretty telling.

Will Muschamp's 8/22 presser: www.gatorvision.tv/mediaPortal/player.dbml?id=3363865&db_oem_id=6500The team is off until the Monday late practice. There are positions which the coaching staff isn't ready to announce the depth chart: -Backup QB -CB -Safety -Nickle -PK On the DB positions, all of the players considered will play regardless of who shows up first on the depth chart. It hasn't been decided yet if Khairi Clark will be allowed to play. He's held his own in practice according to observers and the coaches speak well of him. For me, this is turning into another Jay-nard Bostwick situation from last season where all of the information says Clark should be a part of the depth chart and play when needed; however, if the coaches decide like the Bostwick situation, Clark will keep his redshirt on until the 15 season. I think Jonathan Bullard will keep Clark on the sideline as he will be used inside for pass rush on passing downs and against passing teams. There just won't be enough snaps to go around for Clark unless UF gets hit by the injury bug at DT. I don't think we'll see staff released depth chart until the middle of next week.

Will Muschamp awards scholarships to two walkons:
By Robbie Andreu Staff writer

Last Modified: Friday, August 22, 2014 at 4:05 p.m.
Florida coach Will Muschamp had a chance to enjoy one of his favorite moments Friday after practice, awarding scholarships to two walk-on players in front of the rest of the team.
The scholarships went to junior wide receiver Michael McNeely and senior place-kicker Frankie Velez.
“We had two available scholarships. Both of those guys will contribute to our football team,” Muschamp said. “Mike has been a fantastic special teams player and just a wonderful young man and has done everything we've asked him to do. He will be a huge contributor on special teams.
“Frankie is still in competition for field goal kicking duties and extra point duties and I think he has done a fantastic job in camp and has been here for five years and done everything we've asked him to do as far as those things. Plugging in last year. Both of those guys very well rewarded and I'm happy for both of those guys.”
Muschamp knows exactly how McNeely and Velez are feeling after being awarded scholarships. Muschamp was a walk-on at Georgia who also earned one.
“Awesome, absolutely awesome,” Muschamp said. “I earned a scholarship when I went to school and I’ll never forget the feeling when my coach, Ray Goff, walked up to me and said you earned your scholarship. That means you have now gained the respect of your staff and your teammates, not that you didn’t have it before. But now you’re recognized as one of the guys.
“And that’s why walk-ons are so important to me. They’re treated no different than a scholarship player. They’re not going to get as many turns and opportunities because obviously we have invested ourselves into some of these scholarship players that we feel like may be further along.
“But we’re not always right, either. So there’s nothing better than that feeling of seeing that today and being able to do that on the field with Frankie and Mike. They’re two very (deserving) young men.”

College Football News has UF at #20, a contender in the East, and an 8-4 record. To not include Bullard as the 3rd name on their best player list shows me they don't know crapola about the Gator D.
I've got news for everybody. The Gators are going to kick ass and take names later. 10-2 baby!
20. Florida Prediction: 8-4 3 Best Players: 1) CB Vernon Hargreaves, Soph., 2) DE Dante Fowler, Jr., 3) LB Antonio Morrison, Jr. Relative Strengths: 1) D Line, 2) Linebacker, 3) Secondary Spotlight Units: 1) Receiver, 2) Running Back, 3) Quarterback The season will be a success if … the Gators win the SEC East. If Missouri could get the job done, then Florida should certainly be able to come up with a surprise year, even with a brutal schedule that doesn’t provide any breaks. As long as the defense can continue to be among the ten best in the country, and if the offense can do anything to not be so pitiful, it really should be possible to survive the East unscathed – at least that has to be the goal. Split with Alabama and LSU, and hope for the best.

Gators given weekend off, coaches to meet Sunday to discuss depth chart, and the depth chart will likely be released on Tuesday. This from Gatorzone:
By SCOTT CARTER GatorZone.com Senior Writer
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The scene outside Ben Hill Griffin Stadium on Saturday morning was relatively calm.
A couple of fans posed for photos in front of the Heisman statues, a group of students danced as part of an exercise class, and Sting’s voice could be heard over the speakers from inside the stadium while patches of brave folks climbed stairs.
Come next Saturday night, The Swamp officially returns when the Gators host Idaho in the 2014 season opener. The Gators broke camp Friday and have the weekend off.
For a program coming off its first losing season since 1979 – one marred by injuries to key players – the Gators have already cleared one major hurdle: a healthy camp.
“We only had two soft-tissue issues in all of camp,’’ Gators head coach Will Muschamp said. “That's outstanding. That's the best I've been around, as opposed to last year.”
In retrospect, last year’s fall camp foretold using a bullhorn what was to come in regard to injuries.
Receiver Andre Debose and linebacker Matt Rolin suffered season-ending knee injuries the first week. Meanwhile, starting offensive lineman Jon Halapio endured a pectoral muscle tear that limited him much of the season and starting right tackle Chaz Green was lost for the season due to shoulder surgery.
And don’t forget, starting quarterback Jeff Driskel missed time after an emergency appendectomy and running back Matt Jones missed camp due to a serious viral infection.
And of course, it only got worse from there as Florida limped to a 4-8 record.
However, continuing the positive tone Muschamp and Co. took into camp, the Gators open preparation for Idaho on Monday healthy. The only major scare in camp came when sophomore cornerback Vernon Hargreaves III suffered a bone bruise to his left knee the second week. Hargreaves missed time but quickly recovered and along with safety Keanu Neal is one of two starters set in the secondary.
“I think we only had three injuries as far as hamstrings, groins, those sort of things and hernias,” Muschamp said. “That tells you we're training the right way.”
Freshman offensive lineman David Sharpe (ankle) and defensive back Marcus Maye (hamstring) are the two biggest question marks entering the first week of the season. Muschamp expects both back soon.
With a full allotment of players, the primary job for Florida’s coaching staff over the weekend is narrowing the depth chart.
The biggest decision looms at quarterback, where true freshmen Treon Harris and Will Grier are competing with redshirt sophomore Skyler Mornhinweg to back up Driskel.
Harris and Grier took significant snaps during camp, as did Mornhinweg. Regardless, Muschamp said to expect the second-string quarterback to play against the Vandals a week from today.
“We'd like to script him in, by the second quarter, whoever ends up being the guy and go from there," Muschamp said. "I think that, again, giving him a game situation, kind of like we did our first year.”
The other position battles that remain open are both offensive guard spots, three secondary positions (safety, cornerback and nickel) and the place-kicking job.
Muschamp awarded fifth-year senior kicker Frankie Velez a scholarship Friday. Velez has competed throughout camp with redshirt sophomore Austin Hardin. The Florida kicking game struggled mightily in 2013, making 12 of 22 attempts while opponents connected on 22 of 23 field goals.
At punter, senior Kyle Christy appears to have an advantage over sophomore Johnny Townsend.
Muschamp’s next scheduled media availability is Tuesday, at which time he is expected to announce the staff’s decisions following a weekend spent reviewing film and critiquing the roster.
“We’ll release a depth chart next week,’’ Muschamp said Friday. “We'll give the staff off Saturday and get back Sunday and have lengthy discussions again moving forward on what's best for our football program.”
One advantage the Gators have coming out of camp is a deeper roster thanks to an influx of freshmen who competed well at practice over the last three weeks.
True freshmen J.C. Jackson, Jalen Tabor and Quincy Wilson are in the mix in the secondary. While the starters remain uncertain, you can expect a lot of rotation in the secondary like the Gators have done in the past under Muschamp.
“I’m very much up in the air on where we will go right now because I do think it’s very close,’’ Muschamp said. “I do think those guys all do some nice things for us and we certainly can function and win with all of them.”
Redshirt sophomore defensive lineman Alex McAlister is ready to start the season. He summed up what most players – at least those on defense – felt as camp came to a close.
“Getting into Idaho, getting into the first game, you start seeing stuff start to condense and slow down,’’ he said. “We’re starting to focus on schemes, what their people do. So it’s better just to focus on them and not having to worry about not hitting Driskel every play.”
