Muschamp has a 1 and 2 currently at TE. This from the Gainesville Sun:
Burton No. 1 at TE
It looks like the Burton brothers -- wide receiver Trey and tight end Clay -- are both going to be starters this season.
Muschamp said Friday that Clay Burton has emerged as the No. 1 tight end. He has the size to line up on the line and block and also has the pass-catching skills to split out as a receiver, Muschamp said.
“He's packaged for more situations, so therefore he will get more snaps,” Muschamp said. “But there's no question he's done a nice job. I've also been pleased with Tevin Westbrook and some of the nice things he's done. Both of those guys right now would be 1 and 2.”
Burton and Westbrook are noted for their blocking ability. From what I've seen of Clay Burton, he can't catch a pass even when it hits him in the hands.
IMO, neither Burton or Westbrook can catch the ball as good as Colin Thompson or Kent Taylor. Thompson is in the 250s and Taylor is in the upper 230s. They are both big enough to contribute in the blocking game.
This doesn't make sense to me. We're putting too much emphasis on blocking and nothing on the ability to be productive in the passing game. There is no way I'd have Thompson or Taylor on the bench unless it's a designated short yardage running play. The offense needs to be more offensive in the passing game. The jumbo line package is now known well enough that other teams are going to make adjustments to stop the running game.
For future recruitment of TEs, what does it say when UF decides to under use prototypical NFL type of TEs like Thompson and Taylor to go with converted TEs who can't do any more than block?

I'm surprised to see the coaches have already game planned for the first four games. Pat Dooley's Big Week for the Gators: dooley.blogs.gatorsports.com/11332/big-week-for-gators/By the end of the week, we'll likely have our first post fall practice depth chart. It's going to look strange not having Matt Jones at the 1, but he has yet to return to practice.

LSU is #12. In both the AP and Coaches polls, UF plays 4 of the top 12:

The Florida Gators are opening the season as a consensus top-10 team. That became official Saturday with the release of the preseason Associated Press poll, which has the Gators ranked No. 10, the same spot UF holds in the coaches' poll.
Defending national champion Alabama was the overwhelming choice to start the season at No. 1. The Tide received 58 of 60 first-place votes in the AP poll. Ohio State is No. 2.
Just like the coaches' poll, two of the Gators' Eastern Division rivals are ranked ahead of them in the AP rating. Georgia is No. 5, while South Carolina is No. 6.
There are five SEC teams in the top 10 — Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, Texas A&M (7) and Florida.
Florida State is ranked just behind UF at No. 11, while Miami opens the season unranked in both the coaches' poll and the AP.

Monday Practice Updates: www.gatorsports.com/article/20130819/ARTICLES/130819574?tc=cr1. Beginning of odd looking depth chart at RB and LB 2. Matt Jones may be cleared to return to practice today 3. Antonio Morrison's 2 game suspension is still in place, for now. Like Urban was with the WRs, if you don't block properly or you put the football on the ground, you don't play. Will is laying down the law to Kelvin Taylor and Adam Lane. Both have fumbled too much and neither are blocking properly yet.

In addition to this update on Chris Walker, reliable insiders on Gator Country says Chris has completed his course work and his information has been sent to the NCAA Clearinghouse. The Clearinghouse has two weeks to act. However, it's looking more and more like Chris won't be available until SEC play due to a likely game(s) suspension as a result of an unofficial recruiting trip he made to Kansas. It appears that his AAU coach might have paid for his trip to visit, an NCAA violation:
Hoops Scoop Chris Walker’s status remains in limbo Monday, August 19, 2013 at 10:54 by Kevin Brockway
It’s the first day of the fall semester, and 2013 incoming McDonald’s All-American freshman UF signee Chris Walker is still not on the Gators official basketball roster.
But that does not mean Walker won’t be eligible to play in UF’s season opener Nov. 8 against North Florida. At least not yet. There is a drop-add period through August 27 (a week from Tuesday) in which the 6-foot-10 forward can enroll in fall classes.
But in a more likely scenario, Walker may not enroll until December to ensure he meets NCAA eligibility requirements. He took three online courses over the summer in an effort to complete his core courses. Those grades then need to be reviewed by the NCAA Clearinghouse. Based on his last ACT score (16), Walker needs to finish with a 2.6 GPA or higher to gain initial NCAA eligibility.
“The one thing that we’ve tried to explain to him in the work that he’s finishing up in doing is he doesn’t need to rush it,” Florida coach Billy Donovan said last month. “He just needs to do it correctly and the right way.”
From a basketball standpoint, Florida has a deep enough frontcourt to get by if Walker doesn’t enroll right way. Patric Young is back for his senior season, and Will Yeguete, who had offseason surgery to repair his knee, is rehabbing and on schedule to return in September. In addition, the Gators add former South Carolina center Damontre Harris and former Virgina Tech forward Dorian Finney-Smith, who are both eligible after sitting out last season per NCAA transfer rules.
Casey Prather also is back for his senior season and sophomore forward DeVon Walker has made strides in the weight room to become physically stronger after being pushed around as a freshman last season.

Muschamp puts redshirt senior Clark and sophomore Herndon on ship: www.gatorzone.com/story.php?id=26101Tim Clark is a reserve DB. Mark Herndon is running second on the RB depth chart with Matt Jones out. BTW, it looks like Matt Jones could be in pads by Friday. Some reporters saw him on the sideline working out during practice. They say he has to have been medically cleared to workout, but he has the NCAA mandatory 3 days before he can wear pads. We'll see soon enough. I'm still expecting him to miss the Toledo game until more is officially known.
