UF's 2014 schedule (play at bama):
By SCOTT CARTER GatorZone.com Senior Writer
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The Gators will open the 2014 football season with three consecutive home games the way they did in Will Muschamp's first season two years ago.
However, instead of playing their first road game at Kentucky like in 2011, Florida's first away game next season will be at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
The SEC released its 2014 football schedule Wednesday and one of the highlights is the renewal of the Florida-Alabama rivalry.
Florida coach Will Muschamp and his former boss, Alabama coach Nick Saban, will meet for the second time as head coaches on Sept. 20. The two programs have combined to win five of the last seven national championships.
Florida won the national title in 2006 and 2008, and Alabama has won three of the last four national titles, including two in a row.
The Gators open the 2014 season at home against Idaho on Aug. 30 in the first meeting between the schools. Idaho is set to join the Sun Belt Conference next season after playing as an independent this season.
Florida then welcomes Eastern Michigan to Ben Hill Griffin Stadium on Sept. 6 before opening SEC play against Kentucky at home on Sept. 13 to cap a three-game homestand to open the season. The Gators play at Miami in the second game of the 2013 season and traveled to Texas A&M in the second game of last season.
The game against Kentucky kicks off a stretch of eight consecutive conference games until Eastern Kentucky visits The Swamp on Nov. 22 in the Gators' home finale.
The SEC is currently reviewing its football scheduling format with the addition of Texas A&M and Missouri to the conference in 2013.
At SEC Media Days last month, conference commissioner Mike Slive said the current format is set for at least the next two seasons.
"The end result was a decision to commit the conference to a review of our scheduling format in anticipation of the 2016 season,'' Slive said. "This review will include whether or not to play an eight- or nine-game conference schedule and whether or not to retain permanent non-divisional opponents.
“In the meantime, until that review is complete, we will continue to schedule based on the current 6-1-1 format pending the results of that review."
Under the 6-1-1 format, each team plays six games against teams in its own division, one permanent cross-divisional game, and one rotating cross-divisional game. The Gators continue to face LSU as their cross-divisional game and drew Alabama for 2014 as their SEC West rotating opponent.
Here is a look at Florida's 2014 schedule (starting times to be determined unless noted):
Aug. 30: Idaho, TBA
Sept. 6: Eastern Michigan, TBA
Sept. 13: Kentucky, TBA
Sept. 20: at Alabama, TBA
Sept. 27: Bye week
Oct. 4: at Tennessee, TBA
Oct. 11: LSU, TBA
Oct. 18: Missouri, TBA
Oct. 25: Bye week
Nov. 1: Georgia, TBA (in Jacksonville)
Nov. 8: at Vanderbilt, TBA
Nov. 15: South Carolina, TBA
Nov. 22: Eastern Kentucky, TBA
Nov. 29: at Florida State, TBA

Gators look to balance passing game: www.gatorsports.com/article/20130821/ARTICLES/130829904?tc=crWe're going from heavy use of a TE in passing to little or no use of the TE in preference for WRs and RBs. Our TEs will be blocking TEs. If you see Kent Taylor or Colin Thompson on the field, it's a definite passing play.

He's back... Gators linebacker Antonio Morrison's suspension reduced to one game Morrison will return for Sept. 7 visit to Miami By Joe Morgan For the Sentinel 12:53 p.m. EDT, August 26, 2013 Gators sophomore linebacker Antonio Morrison was arrested on June 16 for allegedly punching a bouncer at a Gainesville bar -- the first arrest of a Florida player during a quiet offseason for coach Will Muschamp's team.
 More details
He was also arrested in July on a charge of harassing a police animal after he allegedly barked at a police dog. Those charges were later dropped. CAPTIONS 1/40 GAINESVILLE — Gators linebacker Antonio Morrison’s suspension has been reduced from two games to one coach Will Muschamp announced Monday. Morrison will return in time for Florida’s road game against Miami on Sept. 7. “I just don’t feel like his actions warranted a two-game suspension,” Muschamp said. Morrison rejoined the team when training camp began on Aug. 2, but the two-game suspension held until Monday’s announcement. Michael Taylor will start at Mike linebacker in Saturday’s opener against Toledo. “He’s very remorseful about the whole situation, and we’ve moved forward,” Muschamp said. “Guys make mistakes and have poor judgment at times. I’m just disappointed with how the entire night was handled.” Morrison was suspended following his second arrest in five weeks on July 21 for harassing a police animal. He was accused of barking at a police dog. The charges were later dropped based on lack of evidence. Alachua County Sheriff Sadie Darnell said Morrison should have been warned. Florida’s starting middle linebacker was previously arrested on June 16 for punching a bouncer at a Gainesville bar. He received a deferred prosecution agreement, a deal that would have been jeopardized by a second arrest. However, William P. Cervone, state attorney for Florida's Eighth Judicial Circuit, previously told the Sentinel the second incident would not affect the agreement. Email Edgar Thompson at egthompson@orlandosentinel.com. The original arrest was bogus since only a warning to Morrison should have been given in the first place. But what Morrison did was stupid, and hopefully he'll begin to get it into his head that he needs to use a heck of a lot better judgment (if such is possible for a 19 or 20 year old) when he is out and about. - David ( here's hoping there's no more trouble for any of them the rest of the season....not likely, but one can hope ) PwrMc

The Gator offense is indeed weak, and the loss of another starter on offense will make it weaker. Of those 11 wins last year, none were the games that counted. Georgia and Louisville both dominated the weak Gator offense last year, and had Florida not had a decent defense those 11 wins would have been only 8 wins or less. aTm, Mizzou, LSU and even lowly La-Layfayette almost beat the Gators.

The only way to gauge the capabilities of the O this season is for them to play the games and see how they perform. The O will be better this season than last if only because the players all have a year or two of experience now (as opposed to last season where the whole team was very young and inexperienced....not to mention having to deal with their 3rd OC in as many years). And, characteristic of a young team, they often played down to the competition, which is why they had closer-than-they-should-have-been games vs various opponents. So far as the 11 wins last season not being the "games that counted".... to hear everyone in here tell it, ALL GAMES count. The game vs UGAly was just another game on the schedule that was marred by a very uncharacteristic 6 turnovers (most of them by Driskel). The game vs Louisville was a screwup in the same manner as the game that bammer played against Utah some years earlier. Neither team wanted to be there, and it showed in their lackadaisical play. UF beat more ranked teams than UGAly did in 2012. You lost to the Game Chickens (a team that UF beat resoundingly) and you barely got past a woeful Kentucky Wild Kitten squad (which UF also beat resoundingly). And despite being given 6 turnovers, you barely got past UF 17-9. Looks like you had a pretty "weak" team last season. - David ( flea flicker ) PwrMc

This has always been one of the worst excuses. It's like the SEC got together and said, "hey, if you guys get your ass kicked in a bowl game, make sure you fans collectively blame it on a lack of interest." I don't recall Oklahoma using that excuse when they got beat by Boise St or when Pitt was beaten by Utah. Must be another one of those "SEC things" we wouldn't understand?

I don't expect anyone to understand. It is what it is. In BAMA's case they had just been 12-0, ranked #1 and were the leading #2 gators early in the fourth quarter of the SECCG. Losing that game and then hearing that you just went from playing for a national championship to playing a non-BCS (at the time) opponent affected the fans and the team. Hell no we didn't want to play Utah, but they damn sure were fired up to play BAMA. That's a recipe for disaster for any team. It's a terrible excuse, I agree with that. But it's exactly what happened in that game. I gave Utah credit for coming ready to play and I also berated the BAMA coaches for not getting the Tide mentally ready for Utah. We lost and we deserved to lose.

I don't recall Oklahoma using that excuse when they got beat by Boise St or when Pitt was beaten by Utah. Must be another one of those "SEC things" we wouldn't understand? Bucky.... Frankly, I don't care what the other team's reactions were to their game results. Every game situation has its own individual characteristics and circumstances. In the case of UF, we had just come off a season where they had played above their capabilities for just about the whole season and had to scratch and claw for most all of the wins. And at the end of the season, after all that had transpired, they still had an outside shot of being chosen for the MNC game due to their resume of wins... having beaten the most ranked teams during the season and having the toughest schedule overall. When that possibility fell through, it was like air being let out of a tire. The possibility of going to the MNC was taken away, and they were stuck playing a small-town team like Louisville in a bowl that essentially meant nothing at that point. As steaksauce has already intoned, the small town team was up for the game, UF had no desire to be there, and that's a bad combination. I will not take anything from Louisville....they came to play and they were highly motivated. Louisville was cast in about the same position as UF was back in 2006, when everyone in the sports media were saying that UF had no right to be on the field with the likes of the bucknuts. They all said we had no chance. They said the same thing about Louisville, so they were on a mission and had something to prove. UF had nothing to prove and had no desire to be there. Additionally, Louisville's coach, Charley Strong, had something to prove too. He had been a coach at UF for many years and had gotten his first HC job at Louisville. When Meyer quit, Strong thought that he should be a leading candidate for the UF job. Instead, Foley and Machen went with another coach who had never been an HC before, Will Muschamp. So, I'm sure that Strong felt he had been unfairly passed over and he wanted to show UF what they could have had. Would it have been better if UF's coaches had been able to motivate the team? Absolutely. Would it have been better if UF had cast aside the disappointment of not going to the MNC? Of course. But it was not to be, and UF ended up with an embarrassing result. About the only good thing that can come out of a situation like that is a motivational situation where everyone who came back for the 2013 season remembers the pain of a loss that came in the manner that one did, and therefore they end up working to avoid such a thing ever happening again. So, I don't expect you to understand....nor do I care if you do or don't. That game sucked royally across the board, and UF was listless in that one. That's just the way it happened. My hope is that the UF coaches can continue the upward trend that they have had with the team....the team has gotten better each year. There is still much room for improvement, and hopefully more steps in that direction will be taken this season too. I recall a line that Bum Phillips made when he was coach of the Houston Oilers: "Last year we knocked on the door...this year we beat on it...next year we're goin' to kick the sumbitch in." So, hopefully, 2013 will be the year when we "kick the sumbitch in". If UF can somehow get into the upper strata of 11 or 12 wins again like they did last year, then we'll have a good chance of kicking it in. Some additional losses and/or injuries, and it'll be "wait till next year" time again. C'est la vie. - David ( "...and that's all I have to say about that." ) PwrMc
