3rd down is $$$Money$$$ Down for both the UF defense and offense - This from Zach A. at SEC Country:
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Florida leads the SEC and ranks No. 6 nationally in third-down conversions.
Surprised? So was UF quarterback Luke Del Rio.
“Wow,” he said Monday upon hearing the stats.
Last year the Gators ranked 11th in the SEC and 94th nationally at 36.4 percent. Their offense is still a working in progress this season, but the unit has excelled on third down with a 50.4 percent conversion rate.
That’s in spite of the second-half meltdown at Tennessee when Florida went six consecutive drives without a first down.
Del Rio, for all his shortcomings, has provided offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier with drastic improvement in this category. UF has converted 54 percent of its third-down attempts with him under center.
“I think it starts with coach Mac and coach Nuss,” Del Rio said. “They’ve done a really good job at letting us know that there’s an importance to third down. There’s a reason why the defense calls it money down. Good teams convert on third down and good teams get the other team’s offense off the field. Being able to extend drives is big.
“It’s demoralizing for a defense when you get to third and long and convert. It’s like ‘Man, what do we have to do to get them off the field?’ It definitely kind of heightens your awareness that if you don’t get this you’re going to the bench. So it’s a focal point of our offense. We need to continue to do well in that area.”
It’s a point of focus for Florida’s defense as well. UF also leads the SEC and ranks No. 5 nationally in opponent third-down conversions. That’s progress from where the Gators were in 2015, when they ranked sixth in the league.
“Third down is the money down,” defensive end Bryan Cox Jr. said. “We get off the field and you put the offense back on the field and get them in position to score points.
“The whole objective of the game. Being that third down is the most important down, that’s a major emphasis going into each week.”
Helping emphasize that to Cox & Co. are Jacob Gabriel and Kane Ivers-Osthus, the two UF students who jump and scream holding “money down” signs every time it’s third down for the Florida defense.
“They’re out of control,” defensive coordinator Geoff Collins said on Gator Talk. “It’s a pretty cool deal. Their voices are more hoarse than mine. Because we’ll have a third-down period and for 10-12 minutes they’re yelling ‘money down’ at the top of their lungs.
“So it’s not just game day, it’s practice. It’s every day of the week. It’s a big deal.”
Florida’s third-down success has been a big deal this season, and one of the reasons why the Gators sit atop the SEC East standings with a top-10 ranking.
For them to stay there, they need to keep cashing in on money down.
“That’s something that is kind of lost at times,” UF coach Jim McElwain said. “Offensively, winning third downs and creating a new set of downs, meaning you change at least 10 yards the field position. What our defense has done to get off the field, it’s been pretty amazing.
“Our guys understand the situational football. It’s been very good. It’s a money down on both sides of the ball.”

UF is 3-0 in Fayetteville. Starting piggie QB Austin Allen is still bruised up from the at Auburn 52-3 loss two weeks ago. The piggies best LB who leads the team in tackles is injured and will miss the game. Both the OL and DL are a notch below UF. Looks like a straight Gators blowout of the piggies to me, say 30-14. The bettors have it UF -4, but I don't think the game will be that close.

No Friday night games at Florida - this from floridagators.com:
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Big Ten caused a stir this week when the league announced that starting in 2017, the conference will play a package of games on Friday night as part of its new TV contract.
The games will be in September and October and not every school in the Big Ten wants to play on Friday night.
New Gators athletic director Scott Stricklin addressed Florida's stance on potential Friday night games on Thursday during his first appearance on the "Gator Talk" radio show. (Listen to the show here).
"Well, I can tell you the league has kind of frowned on our schools hosting Friday night games for the reason of high school football. That's such an important part of the South and the culture down here and obviously it's a pipeline to where we get our players," said Stricklin, who was asked about the issue from a fan in attendance. "I think it's very important that we respect those families that are involved in that and don't make them have to choose between supporting the Gators and supporting young people who are competing in high school football. So I don't ever envision [Florida)'playing a Friday night game."
Stricklin is no stranger to playing on Friday night. Earlier this season while at Mississippi State, the Bulldogs played at BYU on a Friday night.
Still, don't expect the schedule to include a game at the Swamp on Friday night in the foreseeable future.
"It's interesting because it's not only the Friday night, but school,'' Stricklin said. "We've actually got over 50,000 students here that all of a sudden that changes the dynamics of everything that you have to do at an institution, an educational institution.
"So there's a lot of pieces that go into that. And here's the one good thing as well. We're the Southeastern Conference. I don't think we need extra games on Fridays."

Nobody else wants to do it either, but at the end of the day everyone still wants to cash the check.

I'd come closer to seeing a Thursday night game and I'm not expecting that either, but that has been done before. In the BIG, Ohio State, Michigan, and Penn State refused to play on Friday night. Do you think they will compromise for the almighty dollar too?

For the first time since 2013, the Gators will be wearing white jerseys over blue pants. It isn't worn often, but I like that combo for the road. We wore it a lot on the road during the Spurrier era.

Money talks. If Friday nights are part of the TV contract, yes, I think the other schools will compromise when push comes to shove.

GATORS SUCK. Is there a way to fire the whole team..?..Starting with the coaches.. !! Mac apologized and he should have. To have two offensive minded coaches and have that kind of performance is pathetic. I really don't know what to say except Luke Del Rio has been awful since coming back from his injury, not sure he ever fully recovered mentally or physically, so to have Mac talking about getting the freshmen or Appleby ready to replace Del Rio is a day late and a dollar short. I apologize for leading you and lz down the rosey path that we would be good offensively if we could just get Del Rio performing at a level between average and good. It hasn't happened and for that I am truly sorry this morning. Arkansas showed what a good program does when it has its manhood questioned. We'll find out against USC next weekend, a noon game on CBS, if the team can overcome injuries and come out with fire and desire to play the game. IMO, it's the coaches job to now do what Bielma did during the two weeks the piggies had to prepare for UF.

It is like they don't want to win...and I know that's not the case. Dropped passes that are on target, missed targets, 3 lousy points... pathetic. Especially when they had ample opportunities. No excuses for 'em. Man up and play the game. Want the ball!!!

I am most concerned about how UF cannot get a competent QB. Even with new coaches. Toward the end of the season, the QB position regresses to the point we have an offense that a D1AA team would be embarrassed with. I honestly don't get it. This is happening under multiple coaches with a great talent bases. I really can't see us winning another game this season, let the Gator Haters rejoice. On the up side, even when we suck we still close the gap with the poodles, and that helps a lot.

Their new true freshmen QB has given them a lot of confidence, they are playing much better than they did earlier in the season. I'll grant you this weekend's game is the best chance at a win, but I'm not confident. How much do you think Muschamp would like to stick it up UF's ass?

How much do you think Muschamp would like to stick it up UF's ass? my dentist hosts a tailgate that we usually stop by before osu games. one of their kids went to usc-e and she/they absolutely loved columbia. so gamecocks-mizzou was on one of their 2 tv's. bentley is the frosh qb, and my dentist was raving about him as well. i saw a lot of the 2nd half of that game, and he looked impressive. he can throw w/touch and w/some zip when needed. powerful arm, nice pocket awareness, mobile enough to get some yards but not a run first guy.

My prediction (SWAG) is a Florida win.
