It was clear Jeff Driskel wasn't getting the job done.

UF covers yesterday if Austin Hardin kicks on the 40 yard FG. This kid has range out to 55, but he's got to do better with his accuracy. Come on Austin, a 40 yarder should be a chip shot for you.

From Franz Beard On Gator Country:

PLAYER OF THE GAME VS. TENNESSEE: On offense, that’s a no-brainer. It’s Tyler Murphy, who went 8-14 for 134 yards and a touchdown and ran 84 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries. Prior to Saturday, Murphy had only played in five games in his three previous seasons in Gainesville and he had never thrown a pass. He played like a cool veteran against Tennessee. He’ll need that cool to carry over the rest of the season because with Jeff Driskel out for the season, he’s the man. Murphy’s ability to avoid the rush and make positive plays injected some excitement into the crowd but it also seemed to give the offense a jolt of much-needed energy. It’s too early to tell if Murphy has long-term answers for the Florida offense but for this game, at least, he was exactly what the Gators needed.
PERSEVERANCE PAYS OFF FOR MURPHY: For three years in Florida fans have speculated that Murphy would (a) switch positions and play wide receiver or (b) transfer to Temple to play for Steve Addazzio or to a Division IAA school if he wanted to play quarterback. Judging by the way he played Saturday, he never lost confidence that he could get the job done if given a chance. Murphy’s coming out party has to rank right up there with Harold Peacock leading the Gators to a win at Kentucky in 1968 as the biggest shocks in Florida football history. Peacock won the only game he ever started to stop the bleeding in a difficult 1968 season in which the Florida team was split down the middle with internal problems.
FOWLER SAVED THE GATORS’ LUNCH: Dante Fowler’s first quarter was worth a minimum of six and a maximum of 10 points for the Gators. On Tennessee’s first possession, he arrived at the ball the same time Nate Peterman was trying to hand off to Rajion Neal. Peterman and Neal went flying and Fowler came up with the ball at the 13. The Vols would have gotten at least three and possibly six without that turnover. The second big play was late in the quarter when he sacked Peterman at the Florida six, forcing a fumble that Michael Taylor recovered. The Gators got a field goal out of that to cut the Tennessee lead to 7-3. Fowler’s big first quarter allowed the Gators to hang on until Murphy got the offense cranked up in the second quarter.
HOW DO YOU LIKE THESE NUMBERS?: In three games, Florida’s defense has given up just 637 yards and only 166 on the ground. Opponents are averaging only 2.5 yards per carry and only 4.9 yards per pass attempt. The Gators have given up only one rushing touchdown and while they’ve given up three through the air, they’ve picked off six passes in three games. Opponents are now 7-37 on third down, which is 19%. Opponents are completing only 44.3% of their passes.
OVERRATED: #1 on that list is Michigan. A week after needing a home job call by the zebras to eke out a win over Akron, the Wolverines had to come from two touchdowns in arrears to take out UConn, 24-21. The Wolverines aren’t looking like a team that has any business in the top 25. Add Notre Dame to that category. The Irish can’t run the ball and Tommy Rees is adequate – if that – at quarterback. Although they won by 14 over Arizona State, #5 Stanford might fit into the overrated category. The Cardinal gave up 357 passing yards to Arizona State. Somewhere in Eugene, Oregon, Marcus Mariota is drooling.

Facts
Three things
1. Junior Tyler Murphy, who came into Saturday's game having never thrown a pass in his Florida career, stepped in for the injured Jeff Driskel in the first quarter and guided the Gators to the come-from-behind win.
2. Murphy threw for 134 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 84 yards and another score to give UF the victory in its SEC opener. It was UF's ninth consecutive win over UT.
3. While Murphy and the offense were working to figure things out, the Gators stayed in the game thanks to a dominating performance by the defense, which held the Vols to 31 yards and three first downs in the first half.

UF drops one spot to 19 in Coaches and 20 in the AP. The beneficiary is Baylor who had a blowout win and is undefeated.

Next up: at Kentucky
The game will be an early evening game televised on one of the ESPN channels.
Hopefully, Joker Phillips will help have UF primed and ready to extend UF's winning streak against the mildcats.

It's only one game, but Tyler Murphy won over Steve Spurrier who watched the game at his Crescent Beach beach house on USC's off week:
By Edgar Thompson | UF Swamp Things, Orlando Sentinel .1:28 pm, September 22, 2013
Clear off a spot on the Tyler Murphy bandwagon for Steve Spurrier.
The Ol' Ball Coach spent South Carolina's open week catching up on some college football, including Saturday's national SEC game between Florida and Tennessee.
By day's end, no one had impressed the man synonymous with great quarterback play at Florida more than Murphy.
"I tell you what, yesterday the most impressive player, I thought, in college football was the quarterback that came into the game down at Florida. A kid named Tyler Murphy," Spurrier said Sunday to open his weekly teleconference. "It’s very unfortunate that Jeff Driskel broke his fibula, I guess, in his ankle. But I didn’t even know who the second-team quarterback was down there; I don’t think anybody knew too much.
"And then we find out this kid’s been there five years paying his dues, doing whatever they ask him to do, so it was really sort of a warm-heart feeling when a young man who has been there five years gets a chance to go in there and plays very well."
Murphy, a redshirt junior, had not thrown a pass in a college game prior to Sunday. But he finished 8 of 14 for a 134 yards and a 52-yard touchdown on a screen pass to Solomon Patton.
Murphy also rushed for 84 yards and a seven-yard touchdown on 10 carries. He converted seven times on third down with either his feet or his arm.
The performance won over Spurrier, which is no small feat at Florida.
Spurrier was a Heisman-winning quarterback at the school and would coach some of the best Gators' signalcallers, including Danny Wuerffel, who served as "Celebrity Two Bits" to fire up the crowd prior to Saturday's 31-17 win.
"I’m sure they gave him a game ball and I’m sure there was a lot of emotion in the locker room for Tyler Murphy," Spurrier said. "He was impressive. Played well, handled the ball, ran a little here, threw a little there, really played well to help the Gators beat Tennessee.
"I just wanted to say that he was the most impressive guy in college football yesterday."

"- Backup quarterback Tyler Murphy accounted for a pair of touchdowns and the Florida defense forced six turnovers as the No. 19 Gators defeated Tennessee"
The defense "forced" six turnovers? I heard UT gave them to them. <g>

I heard UT gave them to them. <g> A few of them were gifts from UT, and we appreciate them for being so amenable. If we'd only won by 5 and UT had twice the yardage UF did, you might even be able to make a case they should have won the game.

Didn't get to see any of the game. How exactly did Jeff get hurt? Holding on to the ball too long and then telegraphing a short yardage throw down and out similar to the 2nd INT at Miami except it was a crossing pattern. A UT player had him by the leg, rolled Jeff over, and broke his fibula down around his right ankle. Jeff should have chunked the ball out of bounds and gone on to the next play. He didn't and UT got a pick 6 and Jeff Driskel is lost for the year. It's a shame he couldn't learn from his mistakes. Maybe watching from the sideline will help him if he in fact comes back to UF next season. It wouldn't break my heart if he moves on. The kid is Doug Johnson II.

Muschamp not surprised with Tyler Murphy - I think he was shocked: www.gatorsports.com/article/20130922/ARTICLES/130929880?p=1&tc=pgMuschamp also addressed our punting game which has been below average. Kyle Christy is one of the top punters in the nation not to be flipping the field position. Dropping the snap on the first punt showed a complete lack of concentration as it was a perfect snap. Punting for a 37 average against UT when he punted for close to 44 last season is unacceptable. I have a feeling Muschamp is going to light a fire under Kyle.
