Muschamp not surprised with Tyler Murphy - I think he was shocked: www.gatorsports.com/article/20130922/ARTICLES/130929880?p=1&tc=pgMuschamp also addressed our punting game which has been below average. Kyle Christy is one of the top punters in the nation not to be flipping the field position. Dropping the snap on the first punt showed a complete lack of concentration as it was a perfect snap. Punting for a 37 average against UT when he punted for close to 44 last season is unacceptable. I have a feeling Muschamp is going to light a fire under Kyle. I don't think he has a choice.....

Didn't get to see any of the game. How exactly did Jeff get hurt? Holding on to the ball too long and then telegraphing a short yardage throw down and out similar to the 2nd INT at Miami except it was a crossing pattern. A UT player had him by the leg, rolled Jeff over, and broke his fibula down around his right ankle. Jeff should have chunked the ball out of bounds and gone on to the next play. He didn't and UT got a pick 6 and Jeff Driskel is lost for the year. It's a shame he couldn't learn from his mistakes. Maybe watching from the sideline will help him if he in fact comes back to UF next season. It wouldn't break my heart if he moves on. The kid is Doug Johnson II. How bad was the fx? Just a fibula it's possible he could be back in as little as six weeks.

I think it involves the ankle and the fibula. Anyway, Muschamp says Jeff is out for the season.

Thoughts from Franz Beard at Gator Country:
Written by Franz Beard, September 23, 2013, 0 Comments,
MURPHY MOVING FORWARD
By playing so well in the first meaningful game he’s ever appeared in during his three-plus years at the University of Florida, Tyler Murphy has set a rather high bar for himself moving forward. Perhaps Murphy has hit the ground running and will only get better. That should be the hope of every Florida fan, but is that realistic? We have to expect there will be bumps in the road for Murphy and that he’s going to have to play his way through some tough times ahead, but he does have the advantage of this being his fourth year on the team. He’s been in all the big stadiums in the SEC and gone through the routines you go through both home and on the road, so he shouldn’t be awestruck by anything moving forward.
MURPHY MOVING FORWARD, PART II
The good news for Murphy his first road start will be in Lexington against Kentucky, which hasn’t beaten the Gators in 27 years and isn’t going to break the streak this year. This is a team the Gators will beat as long as the defense remembers to show up. Kentucky will play hard and might even be better than last year (Gators won, 38-0, in Gainesville) but the Mildcats aren’t going to be able to move the football against Florida’s defense. Murphy simply has to remember that he doesn’t have to win games, just manage them and don’t give them away by turning the ball over. The defense will do all the heavy lifting for him. All he has to do is stay within himself.
THE BIG QUESTION
Will Muschamp’s football philosophy is play great defense, win the field position game with the kicking game and don’t take unnecessary risks offensively. Now that he’s had three recruiting classes to stock up on talent, Muschamp can go into any game knowing that as long as the Gators don’t give the ball away constantly, they have a realistic chance to win. Here is the big question that we won’t know until Saturday: Will Muschamp and offensive coordinator Brent Pease play it closer to the vest than usual because Murphy is (a) a brand new starter and (b) there isn’t a backup who has ever taken a snap? Or will he look at the Tennessee game as Murphy’s baptism by fire and cut him loose as if he’s been the starter all along?

Cummings’ interception leads to praise and ribbing from coach By Zach Abolverdi Correspondent
Published: Sunday, September 22, 2013 at 11:46 p.m.
Florida defensive tackle Darious Cummings tweeted Friday that having CBS announcer Verne Lundquist say his name has always been a dream of his. It came true Saturday.
“I don’t know exactly what he said, but I’m sure he said it,” Cummings said following Florida’s 31-17 win over Tennessee.
With just over five minutes to play in the second quarter, the Vols recovered Matt Jones’ fumble at the UF 28-yard line.
They trailed 10-7 and were already in field goal range to tie the score. But on third-and-9, Tennessee quarterback Nathan Peterman lost his grip on the ball while attempting to throw, and his pass sailed in the air near the line of scrimmage.
“I was rushing the passer and I saw I wasn’t going to get there,” Cummings said, “so I sat there and just played it. I saw the ball and then I went after it.”
The 305-pounder came down with his first career interception and had nothing but green grass in front of him.
“I told him in the locker room after the game, I don't know who looks worse: Me jogging on campus or Darious returning that interception,” Florida coach Will Muschamp said. “Darious looked better than I did, and I was a lot happier to watch him than watch me running.”
Cummings thought he was going to have a pick-six as he ran, but fellow lineman Dominique Easley kept him out of the end zone.
“I was trying to get there,” Cumming said. “Everybody told me I shot out and then I started to slow down a little bit. I was about to make a cut back to the middle of the field. Some people said I tripped, some said (Easley) tripped me. We’re just going to leave that for whoever wants to decide.”
Easley admitted to the accidental trip.
“I was trying to slow up and block the quarterback, but (Cummings) was too slow. His engine started blowing,” Easley joked.
All kidding aside, the interception and 30-yard return took three potential points away from the Vols and led to a Mack Brown touchdown run just before half.
And it was a dream come true for Cummings, a junior college transfer who during the game had to replace an injured Leon Orr (shoulder).
“When Leon went down, Darious came in and did an outstanding job,” Muschamp said. “When your opportunity calls, you have to play well and Darious played well.
“Darious has been a very good addition for us. He’s a guy that can anchor in the run game, he plays blocks extremely well and plays extremely hard. He just needs to continue to work his way into shape.”
Perhaps Muschamp has a jogging partner now.

It mainly serves as an anchor for the attachment of musculature. Some athletes have competed with fibula fractures. I am guessing they are looking at the schedule and realizing eight weeks pretty much kills the season except for a bowl game. They normally do require some rehab to restore range of motion in the ankle when the fracture has been immoblizied for six to eight weeks and they may just feel it is not fair to him to risk playing again for one game.

If he's coming back, just get him ready for offseason conditioning and spring ball. A fresh start in 14 could do Jeff wonders. He has all of the physical tools. He just needs to get the job done between his ears.

Dante Fowler - SEC Defensive Player of the Week:
Special to Gatorsports.com
Published: Monday, September 23, 2013 at 11:22 a.m.
Last Modified: Monday, September 23, 2013 at 11:22 a.m.
Florida sophomore lineman Dante Fowler Jr. was named the SEC Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced Monday.
Fowler had two forced fumbles against Tennessee and recovered one. Recorded three tackles (for a total loss of 15 yards) and was the only Gator to claim a sack on the day. Helped lead the Gator defense as they held Tennessee to just 66 rushing yards. Helped force the Vols to two consecutive three-and-outs in the first half. And four of Tennessee's first five drives resulted in negative yardage and 7 of 13 resulted in two yards or less.

Kentucky game depth chart with comments from Gatorzone: By SCOTT CARTER GatorZone.com Senior Writer GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Gators coach Will Muschamp released an updated depth chart on Monday heading into Saturday’s Kentucky game in Lexington. Freshman Johnny Townsend, a late addition to the 2013 signing class, is now second on the depth chart at punter and will battle junior Kyle Christy for the starting job. Christy is ranked 12th in the SEC in punting after three games, averaging 39.5 yards per kick. Townsend is a true freshman from Boone High in Orlando. He was the Class 8A All-State punter last season, averaging 44.6 yards per punt. Meanwhile, Christy has yet to show his form from last season when he was a critical part of Florida’s success. Christy was a Ray Guy Award finalist last season when he led the SEC with a school-record 45.8-yard average. In other depth chart movement, Tyler Murphy officially moves up to No. 1 at quarterback and redshirt freshman Skyler Mornhinweg is listed as the backup. Murphy came off the bench Saturday to replace injured starter Jeff Driskel and led Florida to its ninth consecutive victory over Tennessee. Freshman Vernon Hargreaves is atop the depth chart at punt returner, a role he served Saturday against Tennessee in Marcus Roberson’s absence. Here is a look at the Gators’ depth chart entering Saturday’s game at Kentucky: www.gatorzone.com/story.php?id=26288

Injury Update •Jeff Driskel will have surgery to attach a metal plate to his fibula on Wednesday.
Quotable: “It’s a four-to-six month recovery from the surgery. He’ll have a plate inserted in his fibula, which is the non-weight-bearing bone in the lower leg. So, again, very disappointed for Jeff. That’s part of the game, but it’s very difficult to deal with. It really hurt for him and his family and for us as a football team.” •Leon Orr hurt his left shoulder against Tennessee but is expected to be back at practice on Tuesday or Wednesday. •Marcus Roberson reportedly ran well yesterday on his injured knee and will run in The Pit today at practice. Muschamp hopes to get him back this week. •Valdez Showers is doubtful for the game Saturday with a knee injury. •Jon Halapio needed three stitches under his eye but he will be fine and is expected to play this week. •Loucheiz Purifoy has a thigh contusion but is expected back this week. •Tyler Moore will not practice Monday but is expected to be back Tuesday. •Colin Thompson has a stress fracture in his foot. It’s the same foot that he had surgery on last season but a different injury. He’s expected to miss one or two weeks.
Quotable: “I’m disappointed for Colin. He was really starting to progress and do well for us. He’s had some issues with his foot. This is a different issue with his foot, something that hasn’t happened before.”
