The last thing I'm going to post on UK - state of Kentucky views of the UF at UK game (It's fun reading): The View From Kentucky – Courier Journal and Herald Leader Streak Continues, Monotony Broken LEXINGTON, Ky. The streak continues. The monotony, however, has been broken. The Florida Gators are still too much for Kentucky to handle. They are too deep, too fast and, defensively, too ferocious. Yet when you dig beneath the disappointment of UK’s 24-7 defeat and plow past the stagnation of a 27th straight loss to the Gators, there was something worth savoring Saturday night at Commonwealth Stadium. In a word, it was audacity. In his Southeastern Conference debut as UK’s head coach, Mark Stoops met conventional wisdom with a defiant pancake block. He played percentages more often associated with a roulette wheel. He sized up a personnel disparity that encouraged drastic action and he made drastic look dull. More at: www.courier-journal.com/article/20130928/COLUMNISTS01/309280128/Tim-Sullivan-Kentucky-football-s-27th-straight-loss-Florida-continues-streak-least-monotony-brokenNew Hope, Same Result There was some early sizzle – a fake field goal so surprising and so effective it electrified a University of Kentucky football crowd wanting badly to believe this was the year – but ultimately the same old fizzle and the Wildcats lost their 27th consecutive game to Florida, 24-7, Saturday night at Commonwealth Stadium. “We definitely thought we could beat these guys,” running back Raymond Sanders said. “There was no disbelief in that locker room.” Their hope was buoyed when UK took the 20th-ranked Gators’ first punch, a 13-play, 93-yard touchdown drive directed by new starting quarterback Tyler Murphy on the game’s first series, and answered with a jarring blow of its own. The Cats alternated Jalen Whitlow and Max Smith at QB again and marched on their opening drive. When it stalled at the Florida 25-yard line, UK looked as if it would settle for a Joe Mansour field goal. More at: www.courier-journal.com/article/20130928/SPORTS03/309280118/New-hope-same-result-Florida-rolls-past-Kentucky-football-team……………………….. Joker’s Homecoming LEXINGTON, KY. — After a triumphant return to Commonwealth Stadium on Saturday night, former University of Kentucky head coach Joker Phillips, now Florida’s wide receivers coach, was surrounded by several Wildcats who wanted to let him know they still love him. Phillips spent 23 years at UK in various stints as a player and coach, but was fired last fall after compiling a 13-24 record as the boss. “There were a bunch of us who went up to him,” running back Raymond Sanders said. “I just gave him a big hug. He told me he was proud of me. I told him good luck and to keep pushing. It was great to see him and to thank him for all he’s done for me. He’s the reason I’m here … and I’m very grateful to him for me being able to be in a Kentucky uniform.” More at: www.courier-journal.com/article/20130929/SPORTS03/309290042/Kentucky-football-notebook-Wildcats-show-former-coach-Joker-Phillips-some-loveMark Story: No amount of trickery will help Kentucky grow up faster By Mark Story — Herald-Leader Sports Columnist Frustration lifted off Neal Brown like heat off of asphalt. The new Kentucky offensive coordinator had just watched his youthful offense get throttled by a stifling Florida defense. For UK, the final offensive numbers were grim: 47 plays, 48 net yards rushing, total offense of 173 yards. "We never got in rhythm all night," Brown said. "What did we run, 40 plays, 40-some plays? I've never had that few plays in my life, I don't think." For the 27th consecutive year, Florida (3-1, 2-0 SEC) beat Kentucky at football. The No. 20 Gators may have been playing without starting quarterback Jeff Driskel and star defensive tackle Dominique Easley, but it did not matter Saturday night against the Wildcats. UF handled UK (1-3, 0-1) 24-7 in front of 62,076 fans in Commonwealth Stadium. Facing a Florida defense that came into the game leading the SEC in eight different statistical categories, the UK brain trust believed it had to take chances to stay in the game. more at: www.kentucky.com/2013/09/28/2849691/mark-story-no-amount-of-trickery.htmlJohn Clay: Gators the example Kentucky wants to follow By John clay — Herald-Leader Sports Columnist When a couple of key Florida players went down, the hopes of the Big Blue Nation went up. Maybe this would be the year, the year Kentucky would finally snap that nasty 26-game losing streak to those swamp-infested Gators. Why Dick Vitale tweeted it could happen. And Kirk Herbstreit said it could happen. And suddenly the Bluegrass state was hooked on the feeling the team from the Sunshine State was ripe for the picking. And then the football was placed on the tee and reality visited Commonwealth Stadium. Again. Thirteen plays and 93 yards later Florida had the lead, and outside of a little slight-of-hand from the host Cats, Will Muschamp's Gators were in charge all night, beating Kentucky 24-7 as Florida continued its mastery by pounding the rock to prove a point. FOWLER STARTING TO DOMINATE
Through four games this season, Dante Fowler already has more sacks (3.0) than all of last year (2.5) and he’s closing in on last year’s total tackles for loss (6.0 for 33 yards in losses so far; 8.5 for 29 yards in losses last year). Fowler is becoming the disruptive force off the edge that was expected of him when the Gators pulled a National Signing Day shocker by snatching him from the Seminoles. It couldn’t have happened at a better time, either. With Dominique Easley going down and teams more focused than ever on keeping Ronald Powell out of their backfields, Fowler has emerged as a force that will have to be reckoned with. He had the explosive first step last year, but this season he’s shown the ability to get the leverage it takes to slip past left tackles and he’s become adept at splitting the double teams. Best of all, he’s playing with a non-stop motor, something the Gators sorely need now that Easley is sidelined for the season. He ranks third in the SEC in sacks, tied for second in tackles for loss and is #1 in forced fumbles (2).
THE OFFENSE IS IMPROVING
It’s far too easy to rag on Florida’s offense. Fans see those box scores from Oregon, Baylor and Texas A&M every week and that only causes them to remember the good old days when it seemed the Gators were hanging 50-60 points on nearly everybody. Will Muschamp doesn’t have that kind of mindset. He believes that games are won with defense, a great kicking game and an offense that doesn’t screw up. So far this season the defense has done its part and other than all those turnovers against Miami, the offense hasn’t been that bad. No, the Gators aren’t scoring a lot of points, but they’re averaging 403 yards per game. Compare that to 2011 (328.7 ) and 2012 (334). Florida passed the ball for 185.7 yards per game in 2011, 146.3 in 2012. This year, that number is 191.8. Opponents, meanwhile, are settling for 53.5 rushing yards and 202 total yards per game against the UF defense. The defense is improving, but so is the offense.
IMPRESSIVE NUMBERS
The Gators are ranked #2 nationally in total defense (202 yards per game), #1 in rushing defense (53.5 yards per game), #6 in pass efficiency defense (86.15 pass efficiency rating by opponents); #8 in scoring defense (12.8 per game), #1 in third down defense (8-45, 17.8% conversions), #2 in fewest first downs allowed (46 in four games), and #1 in time of possession (39 minutes per game).
THREE IN A ROW
When Arkansas comes to town Saturday to face the Gators (7 p.m., ESPN2), it will mark the third straight game Florida has gone against a first year SEC coach. The Gators gave Butch Jones a fine SEC welcome two weeks ago when Tennessee came to town and they initiated Mark Stoops into the club Saturday night when they whipped Kentucky in Lexington. Arkansas coach Brett Bielma was the head coach at Wisconsin, taking the Badgers to three straight Rose Bowls before he jumped ship to Arkansas in what can only be described as a rather strange move. Bielma complained that Urban Meyer was bringing an SEC recruiting mentality to the Big Ten two years ago only to leave the Big Ten for the SEC one year later. What he’s going to learn is there is no such thing as a day off in the SEC, whether that’s on game day or on the recruiting trail. A lot of folks think he’s got what it takes to be a great success at Arkansas. I’m not one of those optimists.
REALITY FOR THE NEWBIES
As Stoops, Jones and Bielma are about to discover, the SEC is very unforgiving when you don’t have the talent and depth to line up with the big boys week in and week out. The only game Kentucky is likely to win the rest of the year is the Homecoming game with Alabama State from the SWAC. Tennessee struggled with a first year Division I team Saturday and the next three games are Georgia, South Carolina and Alabama. The next three games for Arkansas are Florida, South Carolina and Alabama. At some point, you have to believe that Stoops, Jones and Bielma are going to look at themselves in the mirror and ask themselves, “What the hell were you thinking when you took this job?”

Eli Carter has gone from Gator-killer to Gator. The former St. Anthony star who led Rutgers to an upset over then #10 Florida in 2011 with 31 points, seven rebounds and six assists, will be suiting up for the Gators this season after receiving his transfer waiver from the NCAA.
Carter transferred to Florida from Rutgers in the spring after shocking disclosures of abusive behavior by Coach Mike Rice, who was subsequently fired. Carter averaged 14.3 points per game in his two seasons playing for Rutgers, hitting 94 3-pointers in his 56 games, 46 of which were starts.
“We are happy to have Eli available to play this season,” Florida coach Billy Donovan said in a statement released to the media.
Having Carter available will be a godsend for the Gators, who will go the month of November without Scottie Wilbekin, who averaged 9.1 points and 4.9 assists per game last year while earning All-SEC Defensive Team honors. Without Wilbekin, the only point guard on the Florida roster the first month of the season would have been freshman Kasey Hill. Once Wilbekin returns in December, Florida will have one of the deepest and most talented backcourts in college basketball with wings Michael Frazier II, Dillon Graham and Billy Donovan Jr. along with versatile multi-position players Dorian Finney-Smith and Casey Prather.
Carter is a combo guard, as comfortable on the wing as a shooter as he is at the point with the ball in his hands. At Rutgers he was predominately a shooting guard but filled in at the point, which is likely to be his role at Florida.
Carter suffered broken fibula in February in game 24 of Rutgers’ 2012-13 season so he’s only now rounding into basketball condition. His ideal playing weight is 200 pounds, but during his rehab Donovan reported that Carter had put on 15-20 pounds that would have to come off during conditioning.

UF Depth Chart for Arkansas - it looks like UF is sticking with the 3/4 defense. Jay-nard Bostwick isn't listed at DT which tells me either Bostwick isn't ready for prime time or Muschamp is still trying to retain a redshirt for Bostwick, maybe both: www.gatorzone.com/football/stats/depth.pdf

Vernon Hargreaves III Named SEC Freshman of the Week:
University of Florida defensive back Vernon Hargreaves, III earned the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week honor for his performance in the 24-7 win at Kentucky, the league office announced Monday.
Hargreaves made his third interception of the season, the most by an SEC freshman and the third-most nationally among freshmen. He intercepted the pass in the end zone from Kentucky’s Maxwell Smith to rob the Wildcats of a third-quarter touchdown. Hargreaves currently leads the Gators in interceptions.
Next up, Florida (3-1, 2-0 SEC) returns to The Swamp to host Arkansas (3-2, 0-2 SEC) on Oct. 5 at 7:00 p.m. The game will be televised on ESPN2.

UF returns home Saturday to host Arkansas at 7 p.m. on ESPN2. It will be the first night game in The Swamp since 2011 against Florida State. The Razorbacks started the year 3-0, but are coming off back-to-back losses to Rutgers and Texas A&M.
“They've got a good, physical football team,” Muschamp said of the Hogs. “They're playing well defensively right now. They've got a new staff in there and they're doing a really good job.”

Less than a week after sustaining a season-ending knee injury, defensive tackle Dominique Easley has already started planning out his future, and it does not include playing again at Florida.
Although Easley, a true senior, is eligible to redshirt this year and return next season for a fifth year, Florida coach Will Muschamp said Monday that Easley has already made the decision to go pro.
“Dominique is definitely going to the NFL next year,” Muschamp said. “He’s a guy that’s had two ACLs. I think that’s the best move for him right now, going and preparing him for April and get ready for that (the NFL Draft).
“He and I talked briefly about it and that’s what he wants to do, and I support it 100 percent.”
Muschamp said injured wide receiver Andre Debose, also out for the year following ACL surgery, has not made a decision yet whether to petition the NCAA for a sixth year of eligibility that would allow him to play next season.

Injury Update
UF coach Will Muschamp said he’s hoping to get running back Valdez Showers (ankle) back at some point this week. He missed the past two games.
“Definitely by Wednesday,” Muschamp said. “I don’t know about (today). We feel like he will be back.”
Muschamp said starting cornerback Marcus Roberson, who sat out the Kentucky game with a knee injury, is full go again and will play in Saturday’s game against Arkansas. Also returning this week is sophomore tight end Kent Taylor, who has been out the past few weeks with an injured ankle.
Redshirt freshman tight end Colin Thompson (foot fracture) will miss Saturday’s game and could be out for several more weeks.
“Other than that, we should be good to go for the game,” Muschamp said.
Bullard makes an impact at DT
With starting defensive tackle Dominique Easley sustaining a season-ending knee injury last week in practice, defensive end Jonathan Bullard saw considerable playing time at tackle in the win over Kentucky. That will continue, Muschamp said.
“Yeah, I think so,” he said. “I think it’s going to be game to game. Jon’s a guy that we really trained in August camp to play inside just in case something happened. He’s a big-bodied guy. He’s got some fast-twitch for an inside player. He can give us a push inside.
“But he’s going to play both end and tackle for us. Obviously, a little bit depends on our package that week and what we’re trying to do.”
Muschamp said defensive tackles Damien Jacobs and Darious Cummings both played well against the run Saturday night, but need to generate more of an inside pass rush.
