Ex-Miami HC Randy Shannon is the linebacker coach for Arkansas:
FAYETTEVILLE - The University of Arkansas football team's assistant coaches met with the media Sunday to discuss the game week in preparation for Florida. Assistant head coach and defensive line coach Charlie Partridge opened with comments about what it means to play in his home state.
"I'm very excited," Coach Partridge said. "Obviously, for recruiting it's great to get exposure in that state. We don't even have to say anything. My brother graduated from there. He's going to be at the game. It's a very exciting, personal game for me." The Razorbacks have five student-athletes from Florida, and Coach Partridge also noted the emotions for those student-athletes heading home.
"Any chance you have to go play in your home state, I think there's a personal side to getting ready for this game," Coach Partridge said. "We've just got to keep their emotions under control with Denver (Kirkland) getting his first start and certainly Alex (Collins) doing what he's doing. I think all of the Florida guys are excited to go back home and play in that state."
Linebackers coach Randy Shannon is also from Florida and spoke about returning to his home state.
"It's big; it's fun," Coach Shannon said. "It's an opportunity to play against a team that's been known for its football in the state of Florida. But also the atmosphere and the crowd is unbelievable. It's one of those games that's going to be sold out. It's a night game, so that makes it even tougher. It's an opportunity to come back and bounce back and play a big-time opponent."
Coach Shannon also talked about the benefits to recruiting from traveling to Florida.
"It's an opportunity that people in the state of Florida see Arkansas play, especially in the Northern part of Florida, and recruit that area and the type of kids to come in and be a part of Arkansas," Coach Shannon said.
Kickoff for Saturday's game against Florida in Gainesville, Fla., is scheduled for 6 p.m., and the game will be televised on ESPN2.

Arkansas looks to avoid three-game losing streak By KURT VOIGT AP Sports Writer
Published: Monday, September 30, 2013 at 6:00 p.m.
Last Modified: Monday, September 30, 2013 at 6:00 p.m.
Arkansas coach Bret Bielema hopes to avoid a three-game losing streak this week when the Razorbacks travel to No. 18 Florida.
Bielema has lost more than two games in a row just once in his career, a four-game stretch while at Wisconsin in 2008.
Arkansas (3-2, 0-1 Southeastern Conference) lost to No. 9 Texas A&M 45-33 last week, but Bielema was pleased with how well the offense looked in the return of quarterback Brandon Allen. The sophomore had missed a loss to Rutgers a week earlier with a shoulder injury, but he threw for a career-high 282 yards and three touchdowns against the Aggies.
The game against the Gators (3-1, 2-0) is the second of four straight against ranked opponents for the Razorbacks.

Arkansas Depth Chart For Florida (see depth chart on the contents column at left): www.arkansasrazorbacks.com/pdf9/2544616.pdfThe piggies have some big boys on both lines. I remember RB Alex Collins from last recruiting season. His mom made big news when she took off with his signed Arkansas LOI. She wanted him to stay home and sign with Miami. Collins will play a lot against UF.

The piggies have never lost to a team ranked #18 going 5-0 over the years. It's a good thing the Coaches have UF at #19.

THE NEXT STEP FOR MURPHY
Through the first five games of the season, Arkansas has registered 15 quarterback sacks, led by bookend defensive ends Chris Smith (6) and Trey Flowers (3). Kentucky and Tennessee gave Tyler Murphy multiple looks to try to confuse him – it didn’t work – but those two didn’t have the athletes to get into the Florida backfield with any consistency. Arkansas has the athletes. That puts it on Murphy to read what’s going on at the line of scrimmage and know where he needs to put the football. He’s shown plenty of poise and the ability to read the defense then make the right decisions in his first two games so nothing will change there except that Arkansas is bigger, stronger and faster so he’ll have to be that much quicker in everything he does. This is the next big step in Murphy’s development as a quarterback. If he passes this test with flying colors then he’s going to be much better prepared to handle what he will see at LSU where he will be going against great athletes and the loudest crowd in the SEC.

Recruiting Update - Gators looking good for Scout 5 star safety Jamal Adams - From the peach fuzzed Gator reporter:
September 30th, 2013 11:13pm
Adams sees opportunity at Florida
by Zach Abolverdi
Florida is No. 2 nationally in total defense through the first five weeks of the season, but there has been one issue with the unit so far.
The safety position.
UF coach Will Muschamp is still shuffling players at both spots in search of solidified starters.
Jamal Adams has taken notice.
“He does his homework,” said his father, George, “and I do mine. We see there’s a good opportunity to come there and compete for a starting job. To be honest with you, that’s the situation that we want.”
ESPN and Rivals ranks Adams as a Top-30 overall recruit and the nation’s No. 3 safety. He is a five-star on Scout.
The Under Armour All-American wants to go a school where he can showcase that talent, and Florida offers him the chance.
“He’s been a starter since his freshman year of high school, and it would be hard for him not to play,” Adams said. “I really think he’s prepared and ready to go for college.
“He’s not scared of competition, but we don’t want to be in a numbers game. At the same time, I don’t want anybody to tell us, ‘Jamal, you can come in and start.’ No, I don’t like that. You gotta earn it.”
His father believes that would be the case in Gainesville. He and his wife joined their son on his official visit to UF on Sept. 21. At the Tennessee game, they were encouraged to see true freshman cornerback Vernon Hargreaves in the starting lineup.
“That just lets us know what the coaches are telling him is true, that they will play the best players,” Adams said. “That showed us these coaches are not lying to us.
“I know about recruiting. You tell them what they want to hear. But going to the game, we saw it. In your first year, you can get on the field if you come in and show them you’re ready to play.”
Adams also attended Florida’s summer camp with his son, but their latest trip raised the bar.
“It was first class,” he said of the official visit. “The highlight was everything. We went to (Texas A&M) before we came to Florida, and it was totally different. I’m just so excited about it, man. Make a long story short, they just rolled out the red carpet.”
Distance is not an issue for the Lewisville (Texas) Hebron standout due his unique relationship with one of Florida’s coaches.
“One big factor is Joker Phillips,” Adams said. “He’s my son’s godfather. Me and him are best friends. He was the best man at my wedding. We were roommates at Kentucky. So he would have family there. It’s a long way (from Texas), but we would feel secure because he would have coach Phillips. It potentially helps Florida out a lot.”
Another thing that appeals to the 6-foot, 199-pounder about UF is Muschamp, who coaches his position.
“That’s a big factor, and it’s something me and him talked about,” Adams said. “I told him, ‘Ain’t nothing better than to be coached by the head coach.’ To get that from Muschamp would be the best thing to do.
“Now, we know he can get fiery and rowdy at times. If you do something wrong, you’re going to get jumped on. If you doing something good, he’s going to be all wound up. But my son likes that. That’s the way he is. So I know it’s a good fit for him.”
Adams plans to make his commitment in November after taking three more officials visits to Ohio State, Ole Miss and Texas. Although there’s still time and trips left in his recruitment, the Gators appear to be great position with him because they have what he’s looking for.
“Getting that opportunity and the right fit,” his father said when what his son will base his decision on.

Arkansas could easily be 4-1 right now instead of 3-2. In the loss at Rutgers, the piggies starting QB missed the game with an injured shoulder. He came back last week and played well in the loss at home to Texas A&M.

Tampa Bay Bucs cut Ahmad Black - hope he catches on somewhere else:
Bucs release WR Ogletree, S Black By Roy Cummings | Tribune Staff Published: October 1, 2013
Quarterback Josh Freeman isn’t the only Tampa Bay Buccaneers player to lose his job over his team’s sluggish start.
The Bucs released wide receiver Kevin Ogletree and safety Ahmad Black on Tuesday.
The release of Ogletree, who came to the Bucs as a free agent last spring, was made in part to create a roster spot for wideout Chris Owusu.
Owusu was one of the Bucs’ most impressive pass catchers during training camp but an ankle injury sidelined him and led to his release at the start of the season. He was later signed to the Bucs’ practice squad.

I think Mark meant to say inexperienced QB what with Tyler Murphy getting his second start:
No. 18 Florida playing keep-away with opponents By MARK LONG AP Sports Writer

Last Modified: Tuesday, October 1, 2013 at 6:43 p.m.
No. 18 Florida is methodical, deliberate, calculated and predictable. Some might even say the Gators are boring to watch.
They're running the football nearly 70 percent of the time, an effort to wear down opponents, keep the clock ticking and conserve their defense.
It's old-school football - simple, keep-away philosophy - and the Gators (3-1, 2-0 Southeastern Conference) are playing it at a fairly high level.
Florida leads the nation in time of possession, averaging 38 minutes, 58 seconds. That's two and a half minutes more than the next closest team and about 15 minutes more than high-powered and fast-paced Oregon.
Coach Will Muschamp firmly believes in the slow-it-down formula - especially with a stout defense and an experienced quarterback.
Florida plays Arkansas (3-2, 0-1) Saturday night.

Really?!?! Damien Jacobs gives the piggies unnecessary bulletin board material:
Jacobs: Arkansas is chippy and plays a “little dirty” Written byNick de la Torre, October 1, 2013, 0 Comments, Print Friendly
After Florida State knocked off the top-ranked Gators in 1996, Steve Spurrier accused the Seminoles of playing dirty and hitting the Gators after the whistle blew. Then head coach Bobby Bowden wouldn’t admit his team was dirty but did say they “hit until the echo of the whistle.”
With Arkansas coming in this weekend, there’s one Gator who may have flashbacks while watching film of the Razorbacks.
“They’re real physical.” defensive lineman Damien Jacobs said. “I think they’re a little chippy. They’re a little dirty. So we’re going to have to be ready for it all this week.”
Jacobs singled out Preseason All-SEC center Travis Swanson as the main culprit of playing through the echo of the whistle.
“I just see from film a lot of stuff after the play, especially with the center No. 64 [Swanson].” Jacobs said. “He’s a good athlete after the play. He makes you want to do something to him. We’re gonna have to try to keep our temper and keep cool on that.”
Swanson was on the pre-season Rimington Award Watch List and has started every single time at center for 43 consecutive games since 2010. He has also been a captain for the past two seasons and heads up an offensive line that’s paving the way for the SEC’s second best rushing offense with an eye-popping 237 yards-per-game.
Sophomore defensive lineman Jonathan Bullard has filled in at defensive tackle since Dominique Easley’s ACL injury but has yet to see game film of Swanson.
“Actually I haven’t watched him that much.” Bullard said of Swanson. “I usually don’t pay attention as much just to the inside, interior guys as I do. Now we watched a little bit yesterday but I haven’t really got a good feel of him yet.”
Bullard didn’t want to provide the Razorbacks with any bulletin board material and said he would rather let his actions on the field speak for themselves.
“You just play back. It’s the SEC.” Bullard said. “It’s going to be a difficult and tough game both ways. You just go out and talk with your pads.”
With the style of offense that both Arkansas and Florida play, this Saturday’s game looks like it will be a physical matchup. Expect the Hogs to come in with a chip on their shoulder and some added motivation after hearing Jacobs call them out. Just don’t expect to see the Gators responding with anything other than their pads.
On how he’d stop a player from being “chippy” or hitting him late, Jacob’s response was simple and to the point:
“Just hit him in the mouth, first. Just keep hitting him until he quit. That’s how we do it.”

Pease pleased with Murphy
Count offensive coordinator Brent Pease among the many who were impressed with quarterback Tyler Murphy's starting debut in the win over Kentucky.
Pease was asked Tuesday what Murphy needed to fix in his game.
“I don't want him to fix anything, just keep playing,” Pease said. “What I've said to him is, 'Keep just being yourself. Don't all of a sudden change on me that you've got to be this guy that's carrying the team, because right now everybody's doing their job. Just go out, execute and have a scope of what you're controlling. Be good at that.'
“I think he's doing that. He's accurate with the ball, he's tough when he runs it, he's smart, he gets down. He's making good decisions, you know, run/pass checks. He's been high percentage throwing it. He's just got to continue to get more comfortable and understand that you're going to continue to face faster people and coverages are probably going to get a little bit tighter.”
Garcia getting it done
It's pretty rare to see an offensive lineman named the offensive player of the game at Florida, but it's an honor that was bestowed on guard Max Garcia for his performance at Kentucky. The Maryland transfer shared the honor with tailback Matt Jones.
“He just graded out high. He's blocking his guy. Missed zero assignments,” Pease said. “We had no protection issues with him. I've seen him finishing on guys. Guys are down on the ground. He's downfield on runs. He's very consistent, this guy is, at making plays."
