I understand that mindset, but at the same time, you hate to think you've missed out on a kid because you took a black/white position with him. Get him in the fold and then treat him like dirt. LOL

LOL I didn't say treat the kids like dirt. When they are in your class, you continue to recruit and keep tabs on them. Recruiting doesn't stop with the public commitment of a recruit. Other schools certainly won't stop contacting your committed recruit. However, I would draw the line at taking visits. If the recruit wants to enjoy the process and then commit, that's fine. What I object to is committing to reserve a spot in the class and then continuing the recruiting process by dating other schools, taking visits. Recruiting communication should be a two way street. I think a coach should be able to name the recruits the coach feels are in the recruiting class. That's an NCAA rule I would change. Right now, a coach can't publically comment on a recruit until the recruits LOI has been sent, received, and accepted by the school or an EE is on campus and enrolled in classes. What's fair for the goose, the recruit, should be fair for the gander, the coach.

Amen. These days, a "committment" for a lot of these kids isn't even a favorite for the moment...it is a, "I'm going to hold my place here in this class unless/until I feel like I want to change for any number of reasons." I'm with you in that I love the kids who commit and say to other coaches, "Please lose my phone number." Unfortunately, most coaches don't lose phone numbers.

I don't see the process changing as those who make a living off recruiting, ESPN/Rivals/Scout/247 Sports, all encourage the hat game nonsense. Mack Brown is one of the few coaches who played recruiting right. If you take a visit(s), you aren't committed to Texas and you don't have a spot reserved in the Texas class. Play straight or hit the road Jack. All well and good if you can get away with it. But, before patting Mack on the back too hard, remember that he has no problem inviting "commits" from other schools for a visit to his campus.

No ET, don't misunderstand. When I say, "treat them like dirt"...I meant, after the LOI is in, and they arrive at the first fall practice.

Most don't, but they tread a fine line. If a kid doesn't want to participate in the recruiting process anymore, and is comfortable in their decision, a coach risks alienating not only that kid, but perhaps his high school coach and the administration if he keeps pestering him mercilessly.

Most don't make pests of themselves, but they do stay in contact. If they didn't fans and boosters would raise holy hell. And, truth be told, I don't have all that much of a problem with coaches staying in touch...things change with people and in particular they change with 18-year old kids.

Well ET, it is coming down to the wire. The UA game doesn't allow kids to announce at the game if they are committed already and Cook is not on the schedule for a televised commitment. You may have to start liking him and building him and Land up again because this may well mean they will be Gators and not Nolies.

Darrell, I don't dislike any of the kids. As I said previously, the only have to have in the 14 class for UF is QB Will Grier. He is solid to UF and is very happy with the Kurt Roper hire at OC.
What I don't like are the games the kids are playing with the public spotlight on them. They are going to do what they want to do, but I hope they do it with fairness and class.

Cook is announcing at UA. According to his latest interview he is announcing sometime this week. A guy who works for either the game or the network has stated that he is not on the announcing schedule. They will not allow anyone to have a moment in the sun if they are committed, so unless he officially decommits from UF in the next day or so, it ain't happening.

I've heard Cook is going to announce something on Thursday. It is likely an official decommitment from UF so he can have his day in the sun on ESPN. That makes more sense than anything else as he would have no reason to confirm UF as he's already publically committed. At least it doesn't come as a surprise to Gator fans who have been keeping up.

Tim Tebow Joins SEC Network:
The Associated Press
Published: Monday, December 30, 2013 at 5:09 p.m.
Last Modified: Monday, December 30, 2013 at 5:09 p.m.
ATLANTA — Tim Tebow has his next football job — talking about the sport on TV.
The Heisman Trophy winner has been hired as a college football analyst for the new SEC Network in a return to his Florida glory days, but he still hopes to play quarterback in the NFL.
Tebow will appear on “SEC Nation,” a pregame show that will travel to a different campus each week after the channel launches in August. The multiyear deal “will not preclude him from continuing to pursue playing opportunities in the NFL,” ESPN, which runs the network, said in a statement Monday.
Tebow did not play in the league in 2013 after he was cut by the Patriots in August. In the span of just over one season, he went from a national sensation who led the Denver Broncos to the playoffs, to a backup, to out of the NFL.
“While I continue to pursue my dream of playing quarterback in the NFL, this is an amazing opportunity to be part of the unparalleled passion of college football and the SEC,” Tebow said in a statement released by ESPN.
ESPN senior vice president Justin Connolly called Tebow an “SEC icon with a national fan base and broad appeal.”
Tebow will make his ESPN debut during pregame coverage of the BCS championship Jan. 6.
After winning the 2007 Heisman and two national championships for the Gators in the SEC, Tebow became one of the biggest stories in the NFL in his second season. He went 7-1 in his first eight starts in 2011 then threw an 80-yard touchdown pass on the first play of overtime to give the Broncos a 29-23 playoff win over the Pittsburgh Steelers.
