Just saw that Michael Thomas & Vonn Bell announced yesterday that they're leaving too... you will definitely need a program for next year's opener, let alone spring practice in a few months. that makes 9 underclassmen leaving early for the nfl draft. unreal. easily the largest exodus ever at osu. thomas' decision was not a surprise; he's a redshirt junior who already has earned his degree (i think tyvus powell is the only other one w/eligibility who's already graduated but there may be one or two others). osu will be minus 16 starters in '16... that has to be the most since '75. brian baschnagel, wb craig cassidy, db pat curto, de tim fox, db corny greene, qb archie griffin, rb tom klaban, k ken kuhn, lb ted smith, ol lenny willis, wr scott dannelley, ol larry kain, te ted smith, ol rick applegate, ol that was 14 starters (all seniors).
i think 2 years down the road, it will be a good thing, as meyer and his staff emphasize all the positive attributes osu has, plus an unusual opportunity of earlier playing time right now, will be even more attractive to a wider array of talent that you'd think would hit its stride by '18 or '19. but next year? wow that is a huge gap to bridge. bucks have talent returning in the skill positions beyond barrett at qb (samuel/weber/dunn at rb, brown/smith/campbell et al at wr), although elliott and thomas will be tough to replace imho. but the o-line, which has been on it's best run of excellence imho since the 70s, will need to replace 3 spots 2 years after having to replace 4 spots after the '13 season. that's a lot of churn in a position group where coordination is vital and development usually takes a couple years. our 2-deep there this year included 3 freshmen and 2 sophs. on defense, you're not just losing talent. bosa, washington, lee, apple and bell were on an elite level. this year's d-line does have some depth (hubbard, holmes, munger and sprinkle all will do well next year) and the db's will include a kid named marshon lattimore who, if his hammy can fully heal, could be a shawn springs/antoine winfield-type star. but for the first time in quite a while, i'd be surprised if osu is a favorite for the big 10 next year. talented, but extremely unproven.
I think "more" than just one player bitching about the play calling happened in the locker room during the MSU game. And several of us watching the game against ND thought that Bosa's "targeting" was a "proitis" foul. Had some good early snaps in, no chance of injury wearing just sweats.
********************************************** I think the next problem we may face is losing more assistant coaches. There are going to be quite a few HC positions yet to be filled, and a shuffle as always...we may have talent in the wings, but if we lose too much more out of our coaching ranks, that could be an even bigger continuity problem. CUFM didn't do a great job of imparting his 'vision' of how the offense runs to Tim Beck...if we have multiple losses, we could have multiple problems there as well.

out of the dispatch today... some interesting tidbits.
1. meyer says there are no further planned changes to the coaching staff. ex rutgers and tampa bay head coach greg schiano is replacing chris ash (hired as head coach at rutgers) as a co-coordinator on defense.
2. normally captains aren't named til fall practice in august. meyer says j.t. barrett, raekwon mcmillan and pat elflein have already been named captains to help guide what will be a very green (at least 16 new starters) team going thru off-season workouts leading up to the spring.
3. osu has applied to the ncaa for a 6th year of eligibility for wr corey smith, who broke his leg in the iu game in early october (game 5).
4. meyer said he was surprised that 9 underclassmen all declared for the draft. they were expecting 6 to make the move. he said powell (he'd be a 5th yr senior) was a surprise. didn't mention by name the other two; columnist rob oller took an educated guess at marshall (that would be mine too) and either bell or apple being the other two.
5. he was extremely positive about how this group, with so many knowing or considering leaving, bounced back from the msu loss to bury um and beat nd. talked about how they focused on their role, specifically mentioned bell and apple on special teams coverage (which was incredible in glendale) and elliott's blocking vs the irish, how high caliber their play continued to be.
6. looking at the '16 schedule, i'm wondering if any of the expected top 25 teams will be playing two or more of this year's playoff participants (osu plays 2), or 2+ '15 league champs in their ooc schedule (bucks play 3). next year's road schedule will be the most difficult osu has played in quite a while. also the new 9-game league schedule starts, w/no bye week within the conference slate. back to back road trips to madison and state college, and again finishing the regular season w/sparty and tsun back to back. only 2 of the 12 '16 opponent did not play in a bowl this year, and half (6) of them won 10+ games.
