A native of Fostoria, Ohio, Studrawa was not retained by new Terrapin head coach D.J. Durkin, who was hired in early December. He came to College Park ahead of the 2014 season after spending seven years at LSU. Hmmm, Bo Pelini was DC, and this guy was OL.(both Ohio boys)............and where has lSU been since their departures?

Careful now...Lessmiles is an Ohio boy as well... we all know that the defense improved over '14 but the offense backed up some after it's record-setting pace in the title season. after the msu game, meyer moving warriner up to the booth was curious, especially that late in the season. but osu then put up 42 on um in ann arbor and 44 (8 scoring drives out of 11 possessions) in glendale vs the irish.. tough to argue with that kind of production... the best back to back offensive games of the season. the studrawa hire will allow ed to stay in the press box and still have a dedicated o-line coach on the sidelines. that's a good thing. also just saw where meyer awarded joe burger and craig fada scholarships for the '16 season. both are back up lb's who've been regulars on kick coverage/special teams the last couple years. kudos to those two guys, both walk-ons since they arrived on campus.

Starting to look like a strong close for the year. Mentioned Keandre Jones, and then earlier today -
Nation's No. 3 QB Dwayne Haskins Flips Commitment from Maryland to Ohio State. So THAT's good, right? Add -
Buckeyes Make Final Cut for 5-Star ATH Mecole Hardman as Decision Looms. Add to that tidbit that Haskins & Hardman have been back&forthing with each other about playing together...HMMM.
One thing that messes up the normal equation just a bit is that the early departure of underclassmen on schollie plus the early arrivals that could count against last year's numbers, and instead of just a couple left to sign, we could have several more. Still room for more at the inn...

Is OSU on quarters or semesters? I remember hearing a couple years ago that they changed, but don't remember... I ask because I heard / read somewhere yesterday that the two schollies CUFM gave to Burger & Fada were for just one (semester/quarter).

Even if the schollies are just for the one semester, that is a tidy chunk of change. I came across this article (a little older & Sparty, but I'd think the costs are comparable) that talks about the moneys involved. Since some of you are going thru this as we 'speak,' if you want to kick in and/or update, please do... espn.go.com/college-sports/story/_/id/6762550/inside-look-full-scholarship-athlete-versus-typical-student

i was just doing some admin work yesterday since we were officially on holiday and had the tv on. came across a movie called saturday's hero. below is the plot... rising football talent Steve Novak is the son of a Polish factory worker. Steve's skills at playing the game afford him the opportunity to escape the New Jersey mill town of his youth to attend Jackson University in the South. Steve selected Jackson because of its academic reputation, but few at the school are interested in insuring that the highly touted athlete gets a good education. Steve quickly catches on to the cushy set-up for athletes at Jackson: They are not expected to pass their courses; they are given jobs that amount to little more than showing up so they can earn extra money; and, overzealous alumni foot the bill for the tuition and expenses of the players from working class families. Alumnus T.C. McCabe pays for many of Steve's expenses in exchange for the athlete making personal appearances at the rich man's business functions to lure investors and important people. The personal appearances interfere with Steve's studies and with returning home to visit his family. A nicely composed shot of Steve in his practice gear reveals the reality of his situation: His jersey reads "Property of Jackson U." Two events change the course of Steve's life and end his career at Jackson. He falls in love with McCabe's niece, Melissa, and he is permanently injured when a player for the opposing team is paid by outside interests to hit him extra hard. it made me laugh because the movie was made in 1951, starring john derek (talk about a trail of gorgeous wives in his life) and donna reed. 65 years ago, and it was talking about the same issues around cfb. this one had various benefactors paying up to $100/month, this at the time just after ww2, to star players. though the movie is set in virginia, it obviously could have been anywhere usa. i'd never seen it before, so while having an easier work day i made that my lunchtime getaway. the cost of attending a public college/university has gone skyhigh over the last couple generations. i paid $239/qtr ($717/yr) for tuition in '77-'78. my daughter paid over $10k/yr for tuition before graduating 3 years ago. and that doesn't account for room/board costs, which if you're living in a dorm is around $12k/year total at osu. yes, the cfb players, in varying degrees, are generating mucho dinero for universities, in terms of athletic budgets, academic donations, marketing/brand awareness. they risk injury, are forced to be on campus nearly all year long, have restrictions to their time, etc. but they also don't walk away after receiving their diploma (if they earn it) saddled with $100k+ (that's before interest) in student loans, either after 4 or 5 years, something a lot of students end up repaying over the next decade of their lives, if not longer. and for the 98% of cfb players whose sports career ends on the college level? they're getting the better trade off. absolutely.

I'd never heard of that movie either...again, the more things change, the more they stay the same, I guess. As for the rest of your post, when you really think about it...out of a team of 100 players, maybe five fall under that umbrella that's talked about, selling jerseys (w/no names), and putting the institution in the spot where they really stand to make money off the kid. Those are the kids who are going to cash in with the NFL, so they get their money. The only loser is really the kid who THINKS he's going to be an NFL Star & doesn't pay attention in classes & doesn't graduate, or the kid who is a good player & is injured and can't cash in... Smart kids get the degree and a future, even if it isn't the future they envisioned when they first signed on. I'm sure Burger & Fada (& their families) appreciate the schollies very much.
