osu family lost a couple members today. Long time track coach Mamie Rollins was killed in a car crash in northern Ohio, and ex football captain Chico Nelson was found dead in Columbus today. Rollins ran hurdles in not one but two ('68, '72) olympics and coached the buckeye women's track team for a couple decades. Was still helping out as a volunteer coach the past few seasons. Nelson was a db in the early 90s. His last season was '93, when coop's team finally got back on top of the big 10 (tied w uw) at 10-1-1. Never met Nelson, but Rollins I had a chance to interview a few times while working at the school radio station then a decade later at ch 6. She was cool, and tough, and cool. Sorry to hear this news. wanted to get back to this earlier......but the day's events got in the way. "Chico" was a good kid. Sad really, no reports of why yet, but suspecting something just gave out waaaaaaay too soon.

Sad really, no reports of why yet, but suspecting something just gave out waaaaaaay too soon. not so subtle inferences from eddie george and robert smith in today's dispatch, saying nelson had suffered thru some tough times in his adult life. for those of you who didn't see this, authorities in grove city are saying his death was an apparent suicide via gunshot wound. heard he was working at a golf club in florida (think he grew up in sarasota) in sales, but not much else. police say it looks like he may have also tried to go the carbon monoxide route in a garage there. always makes you think 'cte' after effects when you hear something like this. he was literally just at a charity event in florida put on by dick vitale last friday.

zeke elliott inked his contract with dallas. $16.3 million signing bonus, a 4 year deal adding $8.6 million for a total of $24.9 million, w/a 5th year option. i'd say leaving school a year early was a decent decision. now comes to time to prove his worth. i love the work ethic he's displayed to this point in his athletic career, and have no doubt that continued self-discipline will not be a hurdle for him.

Ahem...........50 for my prize pupil thank you very much you're going to get a debate from me on that number. he started his first game as a frosh in the '92 opener (louisville?) then broke his ankle that week before game 2 and sat out the rest of the season. he returned in '93 as a starter and kept the job for 4 years... 49 straight. so i guess he started in 50 straight that he was dressed, but not 50 straight osu games.
