Chris Ward, the largest of Woody's linemen. Tipped the scale at a whopping 270 pounds. funny how a generation later, that would be smallish DE size. "he stood 6 foot 6, weighed 245, broad at the shoulder, and narrow at the hip, everybody knew you didn't give no lip to Big John......Big Bad John" "and with all his strength he gave a mighty shove, and a miner yelled out 'THERE'S A LIGHT UP ABOVE" and 20 men scrambled from a would be grave and now there's only one left down there to save...Big John"

Coming up on BTN, beginning at 2:00 EDT, 2015 Sugar Bowl followed by the '15 CFPNCG...Ohio State Classics (one hour version). Buckeye Classics are generally NC games...everyone else's classics are generally wins over the Buckeyes...

bucks lost a recruit, kind of, from the '17 class. rb todd sibley from akron hoban decommitted and accepted an offer from pitt. meyer/staff had asked him to grayshirt (he initially did a verbal commit last year) as they try to juggle the numbers on the class. sibley's quote thanked meyer, rb coach tony alford, mark pantoni (dir/player personnel) 'and the rest of the ohio state coaching staff for everything they have done for me and ultimately just giving me a shot. they have opened many doors for me and i can never repay them for that!' that's a pretty complimentary statement, first impression i got from that is that meyer might have contacted pat narduzzi (pitt's coach) and told him he might want to take a look at sibley, but that's just my conjecture. osu has j.k. dobbins from texas as their primary rb in the '17 class, and are chasing a kid from mississippi, cam akers, also.
dispatch also reported today on a potential recruit for the '18 class ('18?? already??? lol). a high profile qb named emory jones from georgia attended the osu summer camp and, afterward, said that ohio state was his dream school. of course, after saying that he went on to attend another summer camp at clemson and will be in knoxville today for a vol recruiting visit, so you take that comment for what it's worth. that said, bill kurelic of bucknuts and marc givler from rivals both think he'll opt for osu, tho kurelic says tennessee poses the biggest threat.

Hmmm...You know, for all this, I've used the Ohio State official athletic site. Seemed to me to be the most reliable, and you would think, 100% (or pretty danged close) accurate. I've been noticing more and more discrepancies as this has progressed. Initially, it was just the names, perhaps a different spelling of the last name, or a different first name, and since we're talking about someone at sometime, doing the typing, you figure, ehhh...so what? A little digging would usually reveal the truth/facts. I began noticing a lot of All America/All Big Ten Center selections on the list. After compiling that, it led me to that section on line of Buckeye Legends and Greats. I wanted to back check myself, and make sure I hadn't left off a Buckeye Legend on my countdown...as I was running down the list, I was kind of playing a game with myself; see the name, remember the number. I hit David Boston, and his picture there hid his number, so I went to my list further down the page, and saw him listed at number 9 from 96-98. I then wondered if he was a frosh in 96, so went to the Stats link on the main football page, and went to 1996 and hit the Team Roster link, which lists David Boston as a freshman, at number 49.

C............... 1948-50 Verhoff, Jack....................................1953 Weldy, Ronald..................................1959 Wilson, Clifford................................1956 Jim Marshall, All America 1958. Most famous & well known for his time with the Vikings in the NFL. Drafted by the Browns & traded to the Vikings, he set the (then) records for playing in 282 consecutive games and starting 270. Probably even BETTER known for (& kept out of the HOF) for his wrong way TD run in '64 against the 49ers. Alex Stepanovich, All Big Ten in 2003 (and may have made some AA teams, but not listed on the official site. Wiki says he has a tree in Buckeye Grove) . NFL career got off to a great start, he started all 16 games for the Cardinals, but injuries cut that short. Was also an excellent wrestler in HS, winning the Ohio HS State tournament in 2000. Henry Bill Trautwein, selected as Captain in 1950. A WWII Navy Veteran, Bill went on to receive his Architect Degree from The Ohio State University. He was the captain of The Ohio State Buckeyes in 1950 and helped them win the Rose bowl. Known as “Bear” in those days, he played a major role in the Buckeyes success during his years on the field in 48, ’49 & ‘50. Bill went on to become a very successful architect with a practice in Worthington. He designed internationally with projects in Ireland, as well as locally with well known icons as Cooper Stadium. Bill was active in many organizations including The Columbus Maennerchor, Salvation Army, OSU Alumni and the Varsity O, and the Mercator. He loved fly fishing, wood carving and traveling the world, especially to Ireland. Dan Beatty was also selected All Big Ten and Captain in 1990, but I was unable to locate a picture. But I did find a reference to him returning to East Liverpool & coaching at his alma mater ... member of the Potter's coaching staff, Dan Beatty, brings and outstanding set of credentials. Dan is a 1986 graduate of ELHS. He was an all-state performer from his tackle position and was selected team captain and won the Bill Booth Award his senior season. Dan is also the school record holder in the shot put. Dan went on to Ohio State University on a football scholarship where his career continued to flourish. He earned three varsity letters and was a two-year starter at center for the buckeyes. Dan was named to the Big Ten All Academic Team twice and was 1st team All Big Ten his senior Season. Dan earned a law degree from OSU. He and his wife, Tisha have recently returned to East Liverpool where Dan is entering a new business venture.

During his stay at Ohio State, the 6-6, 330-pound left tackle became recognized as one of the most dominant offensive linemen ever to play the game. Pace made the “Pancake Block” famous his junior year, finishing the season with 80 of those blocks (knocking his defender to the ground and on his back). He also literally redefined the role of an offensive lineman with his amazing downfield blocking. Pace did not allow a sack in either of his last two years. In 1995, he made college football history by becoming the first sophomore to win the Lombardi Award. As a junior, he again made history by becoming the first two-time winner of that trophy. He also won the Outland Trophy and finished fourth in the Heisman Trophy balloting as a junior. The latter was the highest finish by a lineman since a second-place finish by Ohio State’s John Hicks in 1973. Other honors for Pace included consensus all-Big Ten and All-America honors in both 1995 and ’96. He was the Football News Offensive Player of the Year and the Big Ten’s Offensive Player of the Year in 1996. He also received the Chicago Tribune’s Silver Football as the Most Valuable Player in the Big Ten. Pace was the Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 1994 and the Big Ten Offensive Lineman of the Year in 1995 and ’96. He also was a finalist for the 1996 Maxwell Award. A native of Sandusky, Ohio, Pace was selected by his teammates as Ohio State’s MVP in 1996. Taken by St. Louis as first overall pick in the 1997 NFL draft, Pace was a member of the Rams’ 1999 Super Bowl championship team. He was voted to seven Pro Bowls. In 2013 he was named to the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame and in 2014 he was enshrined into the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame. In February, 2016, he was elected to the National Football League Hall of Fame. The Big Ten Conference’s offensive lineman of the year award is named after Pace and Nebraska’s Dave Rimington. Nick Buonamici, All Big Ten selection in 1975 & 76. The Brentwood, NY native saw action as a freshman, and finished his career with 282 total tackles, 20 tackles for loss, 10 pass break ups, and three interceptions. Pretty good for a DT. He is believed to be the youngest player to see action the Rose Bowl, when he played in the 1974 game at the age of 17. Alex Boone, All Big Ten Selection in 2008. A four-year starter, with a bit of baggage he appears to have taken care of, and the big offensive tackle seems to be living up to his potential. Recently left the 49ers and signed with the Vikings. Dave Chaney and Rory Graves were also All Big Ten selections in 1970 and 1985, respectively.
