my buddy a1 came back to chirp about osu's loss, the osu contingent here, how we're blind to all outside of carmen ohio range, osu's contributing to global warming, the zika virus, et al. i went back browsing into the archives of early '16 to see what some of us were talking about as to the prospects of this season. this below was from january... Serious question...do you think losing so many is a good sign or a warning sign of trouble ahead?
i think 2 years down the road, it will be a good thing, as meyer and his staff emphasize all the positive attributes osu has, plus an unusual opportunity of earlier playing time right now, will be even more attractive to a wider array of talent that you'd think would hit its stride by '18 or '19. but next year? wow that is a huge gap to bridge. bucks have talent returning in the skill positions beyond barrett at qb (samuel/weber/dunn at rb, brown/smith/campbell et al at wr), although elliott and thomas will be tough to replace imho. but the o-line, which has been on it's best run of excellence imho since the 70s, will need to replace 3 spots 2 years after having to replace 4 spots after the '13 season. that's a lot of churn in a position group where coordination is vital and development usually takes a couple years. our 2-deep there this year included 3 freshmen and 2 sophs.
on defense, you're not just losing talent. bosa, washington, lee, apple and bell were on an elite level. this year's d-line does have some depth (hubbard, holmes, munger and sprinkle all will do well next year) and the db's will include a kid named marshon lattimore who, if his hammy can fully heal, could be a shawn springs/antoine winfield-type star. but for the first time in quite a while, i'd be surprised if osu is a favorite for the big 10 next year. talented, but extremely unproven. mark scott tosu 81Read more: aolcfboutcasts.proboards.com/thread/7120/ohio-state-buckeyes?page=300#ixzz4UjeaZ0YV[/i]hmm. how cocky a statement was that??? lmao. also, in terms of pre-season predictions, cwg saw the bucks going 11-2 this year, w/losses at ou and vs either um or msu w/a bowl win. not bad, mike. i'd call that virtually spot on. nobody was predicting cfb playoffs in september. this team had just 6 returning starters, and of the 16 who left, 75%+ went to the nfl. with that kind of talent drain, this team went 11-1 in the regular season. did they lay an egg the size of a glacier in glendale? no doubt about it. it will likely set the collective perception of osu/big 10 back to pre-'14 versions. some of it deserved. and despite having just 1 senior among the starters, center pat elflein, malik hooker's announcement will probably set the tone of 4 others leaving early, at the least. so there will still be spots open in '17. so the question is, how much will this team grow up in the off-season? after 4 years of stout play on the o-line, we took a step back this year. we discovered that weber isn't elliott, j.t. started fast then plateaued. the same for noah brown, who i thought would break out at wr. and no one stepped up imho there except for samuel. viktor and campbell will get their shot next. i was proud of how the defense performed, from beginning to end. up front, holmes and lewis in particular shone bright; mcmillan and worley had outstanding years, and the secondary as a whole was outstanding. on special teams, fg kicking was great til season's end, punting was stellar, kick returns so-so and punt returns a roller coaster ride. room for improvement there. we had a personality and style on defense, but late in the season we seemed to be searching for it on offense. the only thing constant is change in cfb, and we're already seeing the beginnings of that on the coaching staff. will be interesting to see what develops before kickoff next fall in bloomington. '16 ended w/a bad bad taste in the mouth, and yet 61-6 in the last 5 years w/a national title doesn't exactly suck, contrary to what some have claimed in the past couple days. thoughts?[/quote] I blame the O's problems on CUFM...We've heard for years, this is HIS offense. His offense has either gone stagnant, and the D's have caught up with how to defend, or he's hasn't been able to impart his vision of what he's wanting to his latest OCs. I think Herman was part way there already. He needed the big game, high pressure experience to mature a bit more, but he 'got it.' The O has to continue to evolve, and the OC has to have the right mind set. I had thought that Warriner was an O-lineman as a player, but found this: A native of Strasburg, Ohio, Warinner played football and baseball at Mount Union College from 1979-83. He led the team in rushing yards, receptions and scoring while earning his fourth letter in 1983. Warinner also received two letters in baseball at Mount Union. He graduated from Mount Union in 1984 with a bachelor's degree in physical education and earned a master's degree in education from Akron in 1985. So he does/should have an offensive mind set. Something doesn't seem to be clicking. Meyer needs to spend some time and mental resources and fix whatever it is that's wrong. The coaching staff needs a little team building this off season.

No surprise on Conley leaving w a year of eligibility left. He graduated last month, a 2 year starter who stepped up this year. I wish him the best.

Interesting numbers:
- Ohio State is now 294-1-1 when scoring 35 or more points in a game. - Urban Meyer had coached 193 games without being shutout.
Clemson is responsible for the one loss when we have scored 35 or more and they are responsible for Meyer's lone shutout. Dabo apparently has our number.

McMillan has declared for the NFL draft. that makes 3 of the 4 i predicted on defense. lattimore would be the 4th... again w/the year mcmillan had in '16 it's hard to argue w/the decision. a potential nfl career is very very finite in terms of length.

And if you also consider the first time we played clemson marked the end of woody's career, that's the triple crown of negatives.

He said the rest of the team has been making fun of the sophomore defensive tackle because of how much it’s blown up. “Nobody has done it as aggressive as Christian did,” Boulware said. “We try to be a little more discreet about it and poke somebody. He definitely grabbed a handful.”

I have some thoughts but am short of time to post them at the moment. Maybe tomorrow. ^^^^^ I take it (looking at your new avatar) that you won this year?
