New season, same thing - UF is currently #1 in softball and is the defending national champion. The Gators beat #15 UCF 2-1 last night. This from Gatorzone:
Wednesday February 25, 2015
Florida Capitalizes on Opportunities to Earn 2-1 Win Over No. 15 UCF
Gainesville, Fla. – The No. 1-ranked University of Florida softball team defeated in-state rival UCF, 2-1, on Wednesday to close out a perfect 11-game homestand and run its season-opening winning streak to 17 games.
Gator freshman Aleshia Ocasio pitched her fourth complete game to improve to 5-0 on the year, yielding one earned run on three hits with no walks and eight strikeouts. The Orange and Blue took advantage of a key UCF error to produce their first run, and the Gators minimized the damage from their own miscues to earn the victory.
Kirsti Merritt led off the bottom of the third with a double before advancing home on two illegal pitches to give Florida a 1-0 lead. That frame was extended only after a UCF fielder dropped a foul ball that would have been the third out.
During the fourth, Ocasio worked around a one-out fielding error and got some help from her catcher as Aubree Munro threw out the Knight baserunner to end the inning. Taylor Schwarz was hit by a pitch from her former high school teammate Shelby Turnier in the bottom of the inning, leading to an RBI single from Kelsey Stewart three batters later that raised the UF advantage to two.
The 15th-ranked Knights cut the lead to 2-1 with a one-out solo home run to left-center field with one out in the seventh, but Ocasio stifled the late rally by inducing a groundout and then sealing the one-run win with a swinging strikeout.
STARS OF THE GAME •Aleshia Ocasio: The first-year right-hander issued no free passes for the third time in her five outings of 4.0+ innings this season. The St. Cloud, Fla., native also recorded eight or more whiffs for the third time. •Kirsti Merritt: Florida’s junior center fielder put pressure on the UCF pitcher and defense with her two-base hit to start the third inning, leading to the first run of the game. •Kelsey Stewart: The 2014 All-American made the Knights pay for hitting Schwarz in the fourth, driving in the first baseman to produce the game-winning run.
NOTABLES •Merrittwas hit by a pitch for the fourth consecutive game and the seventh time in eight games. •The Lake Panasoffkee, Fla., native now holds a .555 (5x9) career average in four games against UCF. •The junior has been hit 11 times this season, which is more than double the next closest Gator’s total. (Castro, Fuller – 5) •The center fielder’s third-inning double was her third of the season, tying Schwarz for second on the team. (Stewart leads with 4.) •Schwarz has scored seven runs in the last three games after she crossed home plate three times in each game of Sunday’s doubleheader against Mercer. •UF committed two errors, but overcame both to keep the Knights scoreless; the lone error against UCF proved costly as the Gators gained a run. •Florida has committed more errors than its opponent six times this year, but the Gators have won all six games. •The Orange and Blue increased its lead in the all-time series with UCF to 16-3. This includes a 10-2 record in Gainesville and a 12-2 mark under Head Coach Tim Walton. •UF has held the Knights to just three runs total in four meetings in Gainesville since the start of 2012.
WALTON’S WORDS On Florida’s execution to capitalize on UCF’s miscues and limit its own: “It’s just players making plays. With the miscues we made, we didn’t snowball them into more miscues. Ultimately, that’s the biggest key – you can’t let that snowball. You can make mistakes. That was the biggest key – we didn’t let it snowball.”
On Ocasio’s ability to hold the Knights to one run on a night when offense was limited: “You can tell by the number of bunt attempts that I had that that was my anticipation – a low-scoring game. Whether it was 1-0, 2-1 or 3-2, I felt like that was the kind of stuff both pitchers were showing.”
On what the Gators will learn about themselves during their trip to California: “The big key is it’s going to prepare us for Southeastern Conference softball. We’re playing a great schedule – I’m excited about the next 11 games. They’re all on the road in front of a lot of people’s families who have never seen them play softball live, or are getting to see them play softball live potentially for the last time in their careers. It’s a long trip, but it also can be a fun trip, going out there and spending time together.” – Florida Head Coach Tim Walton
FLORIDA PLAYER QUOTES Junior OF Kirsti Merritt On Aleshia Ocasio's pitching: "She's meant a lot. She's been doing really good things [and] she's had a lot of strikeouts. I think she's doing really [well] in locating her pitches. We really need her, and she's came through for us."
On being hit by a pitch 11 times this season: "It never gets old. We love hit-by-pitches. I have no idea how it's happening, but it's happening. Coach loves it. We have this deal with Coach where if we get hit by a pitch, we get a Reese’s Big Cup on the road; if we jump out of the way, Coach gets one. So I've got 11 Big Cups for the road."
On looking ahead to playing in California: "The competition in California is going to be really good. I expect really good pitching and some good defense. We're starting to get down to the nitty-gritty."
Freshman UT Aleshia Ocasio On the home run UCF hit against her: "Home runs happen. It was my job to just deliver hope to my team, stay calm and just get more outs and bounce back, so I did."
On looking ahead to playing in California: "I'm ready. UCF was a good team so I think it was a good warm-up. Having good momentum going into tougher games, I think this was good."
Junior 2B Kelsey Stewart On her night at the plate: "I was just trying to make solid contact, score a run. I really didn't make my adjustments as well as I should have in the first two at-bats, so I had a talk with Coach and some of the other girls in the dugout and made better adjustments."
On getting a win over a ranked opponent: "I think it's really a confidence boost just knowing we can beat ranked opponents, and also [UCF’s Shelby Turnier] is a really good pitcher. [It’s about] knowing that we can make adjustments every inning and get better every inning."
On looking ahead to playing in California: "It's great competition. From Friday all the way to next Saturday, [we will be] really working together as a team."
UP NEXT Florida will travel to California for the San Diego Classic I, which begins a nine-day, 11-game California road trip. The tournament begins Friday, when the top-ranked Gators will meet No. 2 Oregon at 2:30 p.m. (all times Eastern) before a matchup with Cal Poly at 5:00 WGGG (1230-AM) will have the radio broadcast with Corey Brooks (play-by-play) and Megan Bush (analysis) on the call. In addition, live stats links for select games can be found on the schedule page on GatorZone.com.

Gators going on 11 game road trip to California:
Thursday February 26, 2015
California Girls: West Coast Gators Going Home
Chris Harry By Chris Harry GatorZone.com Senior Writer
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- During the Women’s College World Series last year, the ESPN cameras often aimed at the Florida dugout and caught the Gators wearing their rally caps and twirling their rally Twizzlers on the way to the program’s first national championship.
Meanwhile, half a continent away in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., family members of UF outfielder Justine McLean were glued to televisions and twirling Twizzlers in support of the Gators long-distance, style.
“They couldn’t be there, but they were really, really into it,” McLean said. “My mom is one of 13 children. We once counted and I think we came up with 58 [relatives] on my mother’s side.”
She grinned. “I’m going to have a lot of people there,” McLean said. “This is going to be fun.”
This would be the dream regular-season road trip for a nice chunk of the Gators squad. Call it a homecoming of sorts, though it’ll be staged nearly 2,500 miles from the UF campus.
The Gators, defending NCAA champions and still sporting an unblemished record, split Thursday for California and dates in a pair of prestigious tournaments that will double as an ultra-competitive launching pad into the Southeastern Conference season as well as a showcase for the sparkling homegrown Golden State talent sprinkled throughout the roster of the nation’s premier program.
Of the 20 players on the UF roster, six hail from California. So does Coach Tim Walton, as well as both of his assistant coaches. All of them are very familiar with the San Diego Classic (Friday-Sunday) and the Judi Garman Classic (March 5-7) at Fullerton, Calif., both of which offer fields loaded with some of the best programs in the country.
Florida will waste no time testing its season-opening hot streak. The No. 1 Gators (17-0) will play No. 2 Oregon (14-1) on Friday, in their first of 11 games over the next nine days.
“Some of these kids are going to play in front of friends and family who have never seen them play in person,” Walton said. “Now, they’ll do it with a little bit of celebrity status. People are going to say, ‘Hey, the Gators are in town, let’s go watch ‘em play.’ And some of those celebrities will be locals.”
Like sophomore left-hander Delanie Gourley whose home in Lakeside is about 20 minutes from home plate at the San Diego State Softball Complex. The two-time California Gatorade Player of the Year at El Capitan High, Gourley was one of the most dominant pitchers in the history of the state, striking 1,352 batters in her prep career.
“It’s so exciting,” said Gourley of going home. “My mom has put it on Facebook to come out and watch us and I’ve seen all these people posting and commenting that they’re going, with friends texting me and saying they’ll be there. I can’t wait.”
Besides McLean and Gourley, senior shortstop Katie Medina (Downey, Calif.), junior catcher Aubree Munro (Brea, Calif.), plus freshmen Nicole DeWitt (Garden Grove, Calif.) and Janell Wheaton (San Dimas, Calif.) are also headed home.
Junior catcher Aubree Munro is from Brea, Calif., minutes from Cal State-Fullerton, site of next weekend's Judi Garman Classic. She recalls going to the tournament every year as a kid.
For Walton, now in his ninth season, the west coast roadie, is a staple. For eight straight years, the Gators have headed to either California or Arizona or Las Vegas for tournaments. It not only exposes his program to prospects out west, but it’ has made for nice perks for his players. Not coincidentally, some of the all-time great Gators -- Stacey Nelson, Francesca Enea, Kelsey Bruder, Megan Bush, Aja Paculba, Brittany Schutte, Kim Waleszonia and Stephanie Tofft -- having hailed from Southern California, which cranks out some of the nation’s finest prospects year in and out.
“It’s a hot spot. There are just a ton of great teams and players there,” said Munro, UF’s outstanding catcher and defensive general whose hometown of Brea borders Fullerton; she grew up attending the Fullerton Classic every year. “We can play year around out there, where as the [cities] up north, they can’t. We’re softball crazy 12 months out of the year.”
The love it and live it, but also really, really learn it.
“There’s something about their knowledge of the game,” Walton said of the prototypical California standout. “The kids you get from out there seem to have such a high softball IQ. You can see it and it and sense when it when you talk to them.”
It goes to the next level when they come to Florida to play.
Take DeWitt and Wheaton, for example. They showed up as rookies on a team with returning starters at every position but third base. They’ve started 12 and six games, respectively.
Katie Credit Walton, who grew up in Cerritos on the Orange and Los Angeles county borders, for developing the cross-country pipeline. Any of star players -- the ones then or now -- could stayed in the PST time zone for some outstanding softball programs.
Instead, they came east.
“Part of it is me and my knowledge of where they’re from and how they do it out there and a big part of it is the success we’ve had here,” Walton said. “And also the success with the kids we’ve brought from California, that’s been a big positive.”
Gourley recalled coming for her recruiting visit. The stadium was dark and Walton took her to the pitcher’s circle and turned on the Pressly Stadium lights. Imagine, he said, it’s Friday night of a huge SEC game ... and it’s your game to win.
“I fell for it,” Gourley said.
Walton, of course, did one better for Gourley last year. In the WCWS-clinching Game-2 win over Alabama last year, he trusted Gourley, then a freshman, for two innings of pressure-packed Oklahoma City relief so he could save ace and eventual series MVP Hannah Rogers for the final two innings.
She fired two hitless innings -- and was credited with the victory -- before turning it over to Rogers to finish off a national championship.
Now that’s some California dreamin’.
Consider this trip some more.
“I think we’re all still California girls,” McLean said. “But we’re all Gators and we all love Florida.”

UF will play Oregon in another California tournament next Friday. This from Gatorzone on the 2 wins on Friday:
San Diego – The No. 1-ranked University of Florida softball team picked up two wins on Friday at the San Diego Classic I, defeating No. 2 Oregon in the first game by a 3-0 score and earning a 6-1 victory over Cal Poly in Game 2. Pitching set the tone for the Gators, as a masterful performance from Delanie Gourley and a crisp combined effort from Lauren Haeger and Aleshia Ocasio keyed the doubleheader sweep.
The showdown between the nation’s No. 1 and No. 2 teams was a pitchers’ duel between southpaws Gourley and Cheridan Hawkins. Florida started the bottom of the third inning with back-to-back doubles by Kathlyn Medina and Kelsey Stewart, and the Gators got on the board when the junior scored on a wild pitch to Haeger.
The Orange and Blue ran their lead to 3-0 in the sixth. Haeger reached on a two-base error to lead off before an RBI single to left by Bailey Castro that plated pinch-runner Jessica Damico. Justine McLean came in to run for Castro, moving up on a sacrifice bunt by Taylore Fuller before scoring on a throwing error by the Duck catcher.
Pitching near her hometown of Lakeside, Calif., Gourley dominated throughout the contest, allowing just five baserunners. The Ducks never had a runner advance past second base as Florida’s southpaw gave up only two hits, a fifth-inning double and a sixth-inning single.
The Gators broke a scoreless tie in the third inning of Game 2 when Briana Little led off with a hit-by-pitch and scored three batters later on an RBI single through the right side by Stewart. Florida’s momentum continued in the following frame, when one-out singles by Haeger and Castro set up a three-run home run to left by Fuller to raise the lead to 4-0.
The Mustangs had a leadoff walk in the fourth, and produced their first run of the game three batters later on a double down the right-field line. Kirsti Merritt led off the fifth with a double to center, and Fuller extended the UF advantage to 6-1 with her second home run of the game, a two-run shot to left-center.
Ocasio entered in the circle in the fifth, tossing three scoreless innings to save the 6-1 win for Haeger and complete Florida’s doubleheader sweep.
STARS OF THE GAMES
· Delanie Gourley: Pitching near her hometown of Lakeside, Calif., the second-year lefty tossed a two-hit shutout against the No. 2 team in the country.
· Kelsey Stewart: Florida’s junior infielder doubled and scored the game-winning run against the Ducks, and then recorded her sixth two-hit game of the season in the win over Cal Poly.
· Taylore Fuller: The junior from Trenton, Fla., hit her fourth and fifth home runs of the year against Cal Poly. The blasts pulled her into second on the team (Haeger – 6).
NOTABLES
· Merritt was hit by a pitch in the Oregon game, marking the 12th time the junior has been plunked this season. Her dozen HBPs are more than double the next closest Gators (Castro, Fuller – 5).
· Little took one for the team in the sixth inning against the Ducks, marking her 33rd career HBP. This sets a career record for Florida.
· The Oregon game marked the second time this season that Florida’s game-winning run has scored on a wild pitch (also: Feb. 7 vs. Michigan).
· With her three-run home run against Cal Poly, Fuller now has solo, two-run and three-run home runs and a grand slam this season.
· Fuller’s two-home run game was the Gators’ second multi-homer contest of the season (Little, 3 vs. Mercer, Feb. 22 – Game 1).
· The Trenton, Fla., native had five RBI against the Mustangs, marking UF’s third five-RBI game this year (last: Little – 9 RBI vs. Mercer, Feb. 22 – Game 1).
· Stewart’s third-inning single against the Mustangs marked her third game-winning RBI of the season, pulling into a tie with Castro for second on the team.
· Ocasio worked three scoreless innings and earned her second save of the season in Game 2.
WALTON’S WORDS
On Gourley’s performance against Oregon:
“She was really good. Having her come home and pitch a game against a ranked opponent – none the less a ranked opponent in the top-five – she really had good stuff today. [She was] pitching to all points of the plate [and her] changeup was good. [The] defense behind her was good. I thought she really did a good job.”
On Fuller’s two-homer game against Cal Poly:
“She’s hot and cold. Just when you think you’ve got her and she pops one up in her first at-bat, she comes back with a three-run homer. You change up the location – instead of throwing her in or up and in, you go down and away – and she golfs one to straightaway center or left-center. That’s a sign of a good hitter, somebody who understands that you’re not going to get a hit every at-bat, but takes what they give you.”
On tomorrow’s games against San Diego and UC Davis:
“I really thought Aleshia Ocasio came in and did a good job in relief of Lauren. Lauren pitched well. One run today against two teams in 14 innings – [I’m] really proud of the way our pitching staff is pitching [and] the way our defense is playing behind them. I really feel confident when we take the field that that’s keeping us in every game and giving us an opportunity to win.”
– Florida Head Coach Tim Walton

UF 2015 is tied with UF 2011 for the best start in school history at 24-0. All the Gators have to do is beat #12 Arizona and #2 Oregon to advance to a school record of 26-0. The games today combined with beating #3 Michigan yesterday gives this week the sort of feel teams face in the softball world series:
Fullerton, Calif. – The No. 1-ranked University of Florida softball team equaled the best start to a season in school history with two wins on Thursday at the Judi Garman Classic, extending UF’s record to 24-0 on the year. The Gators came from behind to defeat No. 3/2 Michigan, 7-4, in Game 1 before earning a 9-1 (5 innings) victory over San Jose State in the second contest. Aleshia Ocasio improved to 8-0 in 2015 with four scoreless innings of relief work against the Wolverines, while Lauren Haeger earned her tenth win of the season in the run-rule win over SJSU.
