The rich get richer:
Special to The Sun

The nation’s best freshman gymnastics class of 2015 belongs to defending champion Florida, according to CollegeGymFans.com’s list of the top 10 recruiting classes. Florida has topped the CollegeGymFan.com list of strongest recruiting classes in five of the last six seasons.
Each member of Florida’s freshman class brings impressive accolades. Both Kennedy Baker and Grace McLaughlin are former U.S. Senior National Team members. Baker took third on balance beam at the 2013 U.S. P&G Championships. She also competed at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials, taking eighth in the all-around. McLaughlin joined current Gator teammates Bridgette Caquatto and Bridget Sloan on the U.S. gold medal team at the 2011 Pan American Games.
Ericha Fassbender was part of the U.S. Junior National team which won the 2011 City of Jesolo Trophy. Alex McMurtry’s 2014 Senior B vault title was her seventh Level 10 J.O. event crown. She also was the 2013 Nastia Liukin Supergirl Cup Senior all-around champion.
The 2015 season begins Sunday for preseason No. 1 Florida. The Gators are at Ball State for a 1 p.m. competition.
Then the two-time defending NCAA champion Gators make their home debut Jan. 16 against No. 12 Auburn. Meet time is set for 6:45 p.m. in the O’Connell Center. Tickets are $5 for adults, while children 17 and under and UF students with Gator1 cards are admitted free. The first 500 fans at the Jan. 16 meet receive a commemorative Back to Back National Champion duffel bag. The home opener will also be the Gators’ first live appearance on the SEC Network.

I know, but it qualifies for back to back. The duffel bags will be out in force this season. The Gators are loaded again. Back to back to back is a possibility.
The Gators will be tested in conference and out. Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Georgia, Kentucky and LSU will be tough outs in the SEC. The Gators are making a trip to Norman as well. This from Gatorzone:

UF's top gymnast is on the shelf for up to 6 weeks:
Sloan has severe sprained ankle

The good news for Florida’s gymnastics team is that Bridget Sloan’s season is not over.
The bad news is that it’s going to be a while before she returns.
Sloan suffered a severe sprained ankle in Sunday’s win over Ball State on her final tumbling pass during the floor exercise. Tests — an X-ray and an MRI — showed that the injury was not season-ending.
The All-American junior could return late in the season, depending on her recovery, according to UF.

UF scores nation high score with Bridgett Sloan still on the sideline:
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Season-best team totals on each event led the Florida gymnastics team to the nation’s leading total Friday night in front of a Stephen C. O’Connell Center crowd of 4,529. The Gators’ total of 198.225 is tops in 2015 and equals the fourth-highest in school history. Missouri also turned in a season-best 195.975 Friday in the dual meet.
Florida Event Winners Friday
Vault: Kytra Hunter 9.95
Alex McMurtry 9.95
Uneven Bars: Bianca Dancose-Giambattisto 9.95
Balance Beam: Claire Boyce 9.95
Kytra Hunter 9.95
Floor Exercise: Kennedy Baker 9.975
All-Around: Kytra Hunter 39.75
Florida used marks of 9.90 or above from four competitors on each event to earn the season-high totals for each apparatus. Each event title was claimed by a Gator, with 9.95 taking the win on vault, uneven bars and balance beam. Freshman Kennedy Baker broke the trend with her meet-high 9.975 to win her second consecutive floor exercise title.
Senior Kytra Hunter’s season-best 39.75 claimed the all-around win – her fifth of the season. She also shared the vault win at 9.95 with freshman Alex McMurtry. Hunter upped her collegiate balance beam best to 9.95, which shared the event title with sophomore Claire Boyce. Junior Bianca Dancose-Giambattisto equaled her collegiate uneven bars best of 9.95 for the second time this season to take her second bars win of 2015.
UF goes to #2 LSU next Friday and still has a date with #1 Oklahoma in Norman later. Bridgett Sloan, UF's best gymnast, is slowly returning to workouts and she is back to traveling with the team. Hopefully, she'll be back in the lineup and up to speed in time for the SEC and nationals.

The Gym Gators lost a close meet at LSU, but the good news is Bridgett Sloan started her comeback participating on the uneven bars. She scored a 9.90. It was her first action since the opening meet of the season when she had a high ankle sprain.

Sloan's penchant for perfection has been missed by Gators
By Pat Dooley Staff writer
Published: Friday, February 27, 2015 at 6:00 a.m.
Last Modified: Thursday, February 26, 2015 at 8:23 p.m.
It was her first live gymnastics since Jan. 11, but Bridget Sloan wasn't satisfied with just coming back sooner than expected.
Facts
Who: Kentucky (4-4, 2-3 SEC) vs. No. 3 Florida (5-2, 4-2) When: 6:45 p.m. today Where: O'Connell Center, gates open at 5:30 p.m. TV: SEC Network (Gainesville/Ocala Cox cable 68/1068) Tickets: $5 for adults, children 17 and under and UF students with Gator1 card admitted free.
Because that's not who she is.
“I was so mad,” said Sloan.
The junior competed last week at LSU in one event — the uneven parallel bars — which was one more than she has competed in since the opening meet of the season. A severe right ankle sprain sidelined Sloan for five straight meets and she's still not where she needs to be to compete in all four events.
In the bars last week, Sloan scored a 9.9. She was swarmed by teammates who know how important it is to have her back in the lineup for the postseason as Florida goes for a national title three-peat.
But when Florida gymnastics coach Rhonda Faehn embraced Sloan when her event was finished, the response was typical.
“I didn't stick my dismount,” Sloan said. “I could have done better.”
Sloan's penchant for perfection is one thing Florida has missed while she has been out of the lineup. Getting her back is only going to make the nation's third-ranked gymnastics team that much better.
“She's the rock of our team,” said senior Kytra Hunter. “It was incredible having her back. Just watching her training all week was keeping us a little more positive.
“She's so light. She keeps everything fun.”
Sloan will compete in the bars only when Florida faces Kentucky tonight in the Link To Pink event on the SEC Network. She hopes to be back on beam next week at Oklahoma and eventually be back to all four events by the SECs March 21 in Duluth, Ga.
“I've told people I will be back for all four (events),” Sloan said. “I guarantee it.”
Sloan's optimism notwithstanding, anything is a bonus considering where Florida was on Jan. 11. Sloan had already scored a 10 on her vault when she suffered the ankle injury during the floor exercise at Ball State.
The hope was that it was a bad sprain. The fear was that Florida would have to compete all season without her.
“I thought my season was completely over,” Sloan said. “I pretend I'm so mentally tough and I'm not. There were good days and there were some really terrible days.
“There were days when I didn't want to leave my apartment. But I could have a big pity party or I could get on with it. I went to class every Monday, Wednesday and Friday across campus at Larsen Hall, crutched up three flights of stairs.”
The hope was that Sloan would be back for the postseason. Instead, she is back with three more chances to compete before the SECs, regionals and NCAA Championships.
“It's a slow buildup,” Faehn said. “The big thing is that there was nothing dramatic after last week's meet with her ankle. And she landed on both feet.”

Bridget Sloan may add beam to the bars for at Norman. The goal is to have her back into all-around competition for the SEC and NCAA championships. This from Gatorzone on the win over UK:
Friday February 27, 2015
No. 3 Florida uses nation’s third-highest total to defeat No. 25 Kentucky at Ninth Annual Gators Link to Pink
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The No. 3 Florida gymnastics team’s total of 198.125 – the nation’s third-highest of 2015 – claimed the ninth annual Gators Link to Pink meet title Friday over No. 25 Kentucky in front of a pink-clad Stephen C. O’Connell Center crowd of 6,617. The Wildcats turned in a season-best 195.95.
Florida Event Winners Friday
Vault: Kennedy Baker 9.95
Alex McMurtry 9.95
Uneven Bars: Bridget Sloan 9.975
Balance Beam: Kennedy Baker 9.90
Kytra Hunter 9.90
Floor Exercise: Bridgette Caquatto 9.975
All-Around: Kytra Hunter 39.60
Florida now has two of the nation’s top three totals of 2015, as its total of 198.225 on Feb. 13 was the high heading into this weekend.
The Gators used marks of 9.90 or better to take each of the four apparatus titles. A pair of Gator freshmen – Kennedy Baker and Alex McMurtry – shared the vault win at 9.95. Junior All-American Bridgette Caquatto set her collegiate best to take the floor exercise title at 9.975. Earlier in the evening, fellow junior
The Gators and the Wildcats wore pink Friday. The “pink” meets are part of Southeastern Conference initiative to help raise breast cancer awareness.
All-American Bridget Sloan won the uneven bars after matching her collegiate best of 9.975. The evening’s balance beam title was a three-way tie at 9.90 – Florida’s senior All-American Kytra Hunter, Baker and Kentucky’s Shannon Mitchell.
It was the ninth annual Gators Link to Pink meet. All of the Southeastern Conference’s gymnastics teams will have a pink meet this season, with the intention to help raise awareness about the fight against breast cancer.
Gator Performance Notes:
· The vault mark of 9.95 was a collegiate best for Baker and it was her first win on the event. The balance beam win was also her first as a Gator.
· For McMurtry, it was vault win No. 5 of her career. Six of her eight vault performances this season have scored a 9.95 or above.
· Sloan equaled her collegiate bars best of 9.975 for the fifth time of her career. It’s the 15th bars win for the defending NCAA champion. Sloan, who performed in just her second meet since spraining her right ankle in the Jan. 11 season opener, has posted a 9.90 or above in each of her three bar performances of 2015.
· Caquatto raised her floor best to 9.975 tonight to take her second win on the event this season. Her previous best of 9.95 was set in the 2013 NCAA Super Six team final and matched three other times.
· Hunter claims her 18th all-around title of her career (and sixth of 2015). She now moves into sole possession of fourth on Florida’s career all-around wins list.
Records: Florida (6-2, 5-2 SEC); Kentucky (4-5, 2-4 SEC).
The Series: Florida leads the all-time series UF leads 76-1.
Flooring Floor Performance
Each of Florida’s six floor exercise performers posted a 9.90 or above Friday. The team event total of 49.725 equals the second-highest total in school history. It is also the nation’s high on the event for 2015.
Florida head coach Rhonda Faehn said in the post-meet press conference she felt like tonight’s floor performance was reminiscent of the Gators’ 2013 NCAA Super Six floor set. The total that night was also 49.725 and it still stands as the NCAA Super Six record for the event.
Four Florida floor performers posted season or collegiate-best marks Friday – Claire Boyce (9.90 – collegiate-best), Rachel Spicer (9.925 – season best), Kiersten Wang (9.925 – collegiate best) and Caquatto (9.975 – collegiate best). The other two Gator floor marks? A 9.95 for both Baker and Hunter.
“It was amazing and at the end of the meet I told them how I felt like tonight was how the team performed on floor in the final day at the 2013 NCAA’s the team - just lights out nailing one routine after another,” Faehn said. “The team not only had huge finishes, their tumbling was better than ever, they really showed it off in their dances, and it was from everybody which was nice for it to really come together. I think it showed everyone on the team that this is definitely something they’re capable of every time. Also to those athletes that were out there competing, it gave them more confidence as we head into the later part of our season.”
For Mama Spice:
Tonight’s Link to Pink meet, which is part of SEC initiative to raise breast cancer awareness, had an extra special meaning for one Gator. Senior Rachel Spicer’s mother, Mickie, was diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this year. The team wore t-shirts Friday which said “I wear pink for Mickie” while Spicer’s said “I wear pink for my Mom.”
Spicer was solid on the three events she competed, posting a season-best 9.925 on floor and 9.875 on both vault and beam. Her mother, who the team calls “Mama Spice” was able to escape the icy weather in Texas to be in the stands to cheer Spicer Friday. And she was easy to spot when Spicer pointed to her and blew a kiss after her floor routine, as Mickie wore a bright pink wig.
“It was awesome just to compete for her (Mickie Spicer). I was competing for all the survivors out there and people that are fighting breast cancer right now,” Spicer said. “This was my fourth Link to Pink and it was extra special this year. I just dedicated it to my mom. So pointing up to her made her feel extremely special because she’s one of those ladies that doesn’t like the light shined on her.”
“It just made us feel extremely special with our story out there that the Gator Nation knows. The support’s amazing. It’s what keeps me going every day because it’s really hard to see my mom go through something hard. Especially something that you think would never happen to you,” Spicer said. “The support has been wonderful.”
Quoting the Gators:
On the crowd atmosphere:
“The crowd was amazing. It’s always so amazing for our athletes to come out of that tunnel and see the seats filled up to the third level. Our athletes just love to perform and to have the support of Gainesville and all the surrounding cities to come out not only for gymnastics, but for such an incredible cause, it makes our athletes want to do that much better.” - Florida Head Coach Rhonda Faehn
On being back…
“Competing at home is honestly one of my favorite things about college gymnastics. Obviously the O’Dome has a very special place in my heart, but being back here and competing it was just incredible. I was so happy with the way things went tonight. Luckily I’m not one who really gets too nervous up there and it felt very, very natural being on bars. It was really exciting to be back especially for this meet.” – junior All-American Bridget Sloan
On tonight’s meet:
“Link to Pink is one of my favorite meets ever. Obviously it was a very special meet for our team, specifically, Spice (Rachel Spicer) with her mom being diagnosed. No one ever wants that to happen in their family, but the Gator Nation is behind her 100 percent and so are we.” – junior All-American Bridget Sloan
On earning a season-best floor score of 9.925:
“I’ve been working really hard, especially on my last pass to make sure I got that down pat, and just for everything to come together as best as it did. It just feels like work well done and a great achievement. I’m just really happy.” - senior Kiersten Wang
On how she shook things off after fall on beam to match collegiate floor best:
“That’s pretty uncharacteristic of me. I almost never fall in practice, and to do that, it was super upsetting, but I just knew I had to shake it off and then go to floor because people were counting on me for floor too.
“I was lead-off, so I had to have a great solid starting routine for the rest of the lineup. It was hard; it’s obviously disappointing. You want to do your best every time, but just to get out there and do a good floor routine -- I was happy with it.” - sophomore Claire Boyce
On what it’s like having Bridget Sloan back:
“It’s amazing having her back. She is a crazy, energetic person who’s always dancing and screaming and just really fun to be around. It’s really comforting, especially for me. If I’m not having a good time, it usually shows in my gymnastics. I get reserved and a little bit more tentative, so having her there - making everybody loose and relaxed and having fun - it helps me a lot. I think it helps the whole team stay relaxed and just remember to have fun, because that’s the most important thing.” - sophomore Claire Boyce
Kentucky Event Winners:
Balance Beam: Shannon Mitchell 9.90

Currently in CA (Orange County) visiting with my son and will be here for a week or so. Screwy weather today....got caught in a hailstorm.

I saw that on Fox News this morning. They had a shot of an iceman on the beach with a surf board leaning up against it. It would have been nice if the meet had a wider television audience than just the southwest. When on their game, I think these are still the best two teams. However, LSU and bama probably think otherwise.

Much higher than OU has scored all year - I'm not buying it:
Final: Oklahoma 198.50 (nation's high of 2015) #Gators: 198.10 (2nd highest road score of 2015)
Looks like a bit too much home cooking to me.
