I've never said the plastic guns aren't durable.  I simply call them plastic guns to differentiate from all-metal ones.  An all-metal gun, properly cared for, will last centuries as well.  Modern metallurgy has come a long way from the 1800's.
Most of the plastic guns are also striker fired, which puts them in a different category from hammer fired guns.
