UF signed the #2 recruiting class in the nation. Two of the top players enrolled in the spring semester to get acclimated to the college game. It looks like the Gators are reloading, not rebuilding:

UF starts 2018 where they left off in 2017. The Gators open up on August 24 at Nebraska playing in the VERT Challenge. They then play Texas. As Mary Wise stated, UF isn't tip toeing into the 18 season. It had better be a reload rather than a rebuild.

The following weekend, the Gators play their first home match facing always tough Southern California. The opening 8 days of the season will be as difficult as any opening of the season I can remember. Nebraska, Texas, and Southern California Oh My!

UF opens with #2 Nebraska in Lincoln in the VERT Challenge followed by #3 Texas the next day. The following week, #10 Southern California visits Florida. In the opening 8 days of the season, the Gators will play 3 top 10 preseason rated teams. It doesn't get much tougher than that.

JMHO, Texas is better than 2 Nebraska from what I saw yesterday. Texas gets a salute for such a stirring comeback on the neutral floor in Lincoln. The Gators split the VERT Challenge to open the season 1-1. The lack of finishing gives the Gators something to work on in practice this week.

From what I've seen of the Gators in the two matches this weekend, this team will compete for the SEC and national honors. The talent and coaching is there to win it all in 2018.

Next up: #10 Southern California in Gainesville next Saturday.

Watched the USC match tonight and paid particular attention to Holly Carlton on the right side. My daughter is a lefty RS, too and Carlton is fun to watch. Heck of a player.

Carlton is a good player. The players have plenty of talent, but 3 national caliber teams to open with is too tough scheduling. That VERT Challenge has to go. The team needs time to develop. Opening 1-2 against the heavy weights has likely already cost UF a chance at a top 4 seed.

I watched it last night streaming on Pluto TV. The venue at NAU is a joke. It is a tremendous home advantage for NAU who is accustomed to that mess. The gym ceiling is so low that everything off the ceiling is considered to be in play. That includes lighting, HVAC ductwork, basketball goals and nets, plus wires and anything else they have in the ceiling. NAU rarely hit the ball off the ceiling, but the Gators ruined advantage after advantage in each set hitting off the ceiling to mess up their momentum. It was ridiculous for a team the caliber of UF to play in that cracker box gym. 

I know why HC Mary Wise wanted to go play a weekend in Arizona. She has several players on the team from Arizona. I just hope next time she schedules something like this that the venue is better than the dump the Gators played in last night. Arizona, Arizona State, anybody in Arizona with a volleyball ready gym would be preferable to that joke of a box at NAU.

NAU has a good little team, but UF sweeps them 3-0 in a proper volleyball venue. More to the point, the match would have been better for UF had it been played outdoors. At an elevation of 7,000 FT above seas level, it couldn't have been too hot outside. At least the balls wouldn't have repeatedly been bouncing awkwardly off the ceiling.
