Chili does not contain beans. Add beans to chili and you end up with either chili beans or bean stew.

Chili does not contain beans. Add beans to chili and you end up with either chili beans or bean stew. Well not to pick at nits, here, but let's break this down logically. If Chili refers to the spiced meat stew, then why is it called "Chili Con Carne", or "Chili With Meat"? I believe that the original dish was conceived as a chili pepper stew with onions and garlic, to which eventually were added meat, beans, tomatoes and other things. What Lee posted looked to me to be simply to be Chili Con Carne y frijoles.... "Chili" for short.

The International Chili Society insists that chili does not have beans. Ask a Texan if chili has beans. The rest of the world goes about happily enjoying beans in their chili. This is a hotly disputed topic, as there is no organization with actual power or authority to define chili. Chili con carne, by definition includes meat, as con carne means "with meat." I believe that was a name that a food company made up to make their canned chili beans sound more meaty.
