The good guy is dead because he couldn't hit a 1 foot x 1 foot target from 5 feet away. If he's able to place a shot center of mass (from 5 feet away), he most likely lives to tell the tale. So yeah, his lack of shot placement was literally life and death. Yeah, they were moving, but for a second or two, he has his weapon pointed and he has a clear shot across the counter, ( five feet away ) at the torso, or head, of the bad guy(s) He misses. He dies. He put shots on target, he most likely lives. Life and death. Hindsight is 20\20. Who's to say had he just stood there, they wouldn't have shot at him as they fled..?.. They probably wouldn't have but who knows for sure what they intended to do.. They were both armed which means they had the ability and the intent to do great bodily harm. The lesson to be learned here is being able to quickly put shots on target. One has to address this possible situation BEFORE it ever happens. Not WHEN it happens. One has to 'wait his turn.' Apparently for this guy, 'his turn' to pull his weapon and start firing would have been when they were running out the door with their backs to him. Hindsight. He decided to engage when he did ( while not seeking cover ) and he paid the ultimate price. He was an idiot for standing there. If he had been behind cover, they most likely would have paid him no attention. After a robbery, they just want to get the hell out of there, unimpeded. He impeded them.
Like I said, you are ignoring adrenaline and fear in a real life situation. You've watched too many movies and TV. The bad guy DIDN'T MISS, so obviously he practices all the time on the range, right? Practicing when you KNOW there is no real danger doesn't mean shit. Sorry.
Do whatever you want to. It's your hide, and your family you could leave behind.
I am RETIRED cop. It's no longer my job to hunt down and arrest bad guys. I carry my gun for SELF DEFENSE and defense of other PEOPLE. I don't give a damn if they run off with a million dollars. That money can be replaced. I can't. You want the whole truth? I can't say exactly what I'll do if I ever get in that situation. To sit here and say "I'll do THIS, and I'll do THAT" is total nonsense.
If I am with my family, my first priority is to THEM.
I have been shot at --- in my personal car, WITH my family back when I was still a cop. My car was hit twice, with one bullet narrowly missing one of my daughters. Thankfully it didn't penetrate, and it was .45ACP hardball. I KNOW the fear and shock of being shot at on purpose.
If I had been alone, I would have chased them to hell and back. With my family, it was tuck and run. So yes, I have been there, and I had no opportunity to shoot back. MY gun was in the glove compartment. That never happened again.
You go ahead and play hero. I am going to play the doddering old man who didn't get killed stupidly.
No offense Bryan, but it sounds like 'cowering' old man. Not 'doddering'. To each his own. :::shrug::: Me, I look for cover ( or at least concealment ) and 'wait my turn' to eliminate the threat. If in fact that 'turn' ever presents itself. If it doesn't, then I'll try to be the good witness. Cowering, or 'doddering', as you put it, ain't my style. If that's 'playing the hero', then oh well. Sometimes you gotta fight when you're a man. Just have to be smart about it. Hopefully survive.

I don't have to imagine or pretend I know how it would work out.
Spent 27 years sizing up tactical situations and working for the best outcome for all. You seem to have this idea that I make up all of this shit out of my head without having any training or experience, with some kind of wacky imagination that I can beat anybody any time.
I can only speak from real world experience that I have plenty of. I don't play video games, I don't believe a single movie or TV shootout and I analyze real life videos of real life shootings. And yes, in MY real world experiences, I made mistakes that could have gotten me killed.
By "doddering old man," I meant a 97 year old guy who has lived a full life and survived to die in his rocking chair. I am far from doddering at this point in my life. I cower from nothing, but I am NOT going to get myself killed because I need to show how big my balls are, and because I think I know everything and I am better than everyone else. There is always someone better or luckier. There's a reason those old west gunfighters did not fight fair. Ambushes and backshooting were the norm ....... not a duel on Main Street at high noon.
You don't need my permission or approval to do it your way. Do it your way. As for "fighting" to prove you are a man .... a man chooses when to fight and when NOT to fight. A SMART man knows the difference. I simply tried to warn you of the pitfalls of false bravado and "practice" that in no way can replicate the real thing.
But do it your way.

Re-read what I've posted on this. Try to grasp what I've said. or not. One time you state that you wouldn't know what you would do and the next time you're saying 'been there, done that'.. puzzling.. Hope I'm never the guy standing at the counter waiting to be served when a robbery goes down but if I ever am, you can bet 'the wheels will be turning' on how to best survive the situation by 'waiting my turn.'

Hope I'm never the guy standing at the counter waiting to be served when a robbery goes down but if I ever am, you can bet 'the wheels will be turning' on how to best survive the situation by 'waiting my turn.' It's simple. I can't say what I would do in a situation that has not occurred. I am prepared to use deadly force to save lives, not take them. Intervene? not intervene? shoot? don't shoot? --- all of that is dictated by one particular scenario.
Sure I am going to intervene if at all possible. It's what I was trained to do, and it is who I am. I am a born sheepdog. It's not something you learn, or something you decide you want to be. The sheepdog in me for whatever reason stayed hidden in me until I became a cop. I didn't dream of being one, I didn't necessarily WANT to be one.
I tried the job out of curiosity, found out I liked it and was good at it, and developed from there. Every "been there done that" I was involved in was different. There is no one size fits all.
